Friday Night Lights is what makes the state of Texas function. Texas with out football is like a baby without nourishment, lifeless and suffering. In the state of Texas, high school football falls second to none. The high school stadiums are bigger than college football venues. Friday Night Lights, the movie, is based in Odessa, Texas. Where as, the tv series is set in Dillion, Texas a made-up city. Two different cities, one same goal. Injuries, coaches and the quarterbacks are always important to a football team and thats what made these two stories special. Friday Night Lights the movie focuses on a brand new team with just one returning offensive starter, the running back Booby Miles. Booby was cocky, arrogant and had amazing natural ability. …show more content…
In the tv series Jason Street begins the season, until he suffered a career ending hit that paralyzed him for his life. This paved the way for no-name Matt Saracen, a sophomore backup who had never seen the field and had very limited athletic ability. Where as, the movie features Mike Winchell a senior, receiving his first start ever as a panther. The hard-working, small and determined quarterback faces adversity and leads his panther team to victory even without star running back and offensive juggernaut Booby Miles. Winchell takes it upon himself to lead his team and show them what he can do. On the other hand, in the tv series, Matt Saracen is struggling to find confidence in his new role on the team. “I just want to be back-up again.” He pleads. This is where coach Eric Taylor steps in and teaches the young quarterback how to work with what he’s got, and how to manage a football game. Saracen in his first start only threw the ball four times, but one pass was a completion for the game-winning touchdown. Mike Winchell and Matt Saracen are your average, home-grown, Texas boy, who grew up without a father or a mother. Both Saracen and Winchell are without parents, but still have loving grandmas that attend/watch every game. The two have very similar backgrounds but opposite demeanor, Winchell always worked hard and never was handed anything. Saracen was handed the starting quarterback job after Jason was paralyzed, and he didn’t want the responsibility. This adds to his uprising throughout the next couple of weeks. After he won the first game at quarterback, people said, “Jason Street who?” He didn’t know Jason before the injury and he didn't know what to do, so he went to Jason for help regarding leadership and stepping up when the team needed it. Jason taught Saracen to not take anything for granted, how to leave it all on the field and how to overcome adversity and
The starting left tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, Michael Oher, had what some people might call a very hard life. He was born on May 28, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee and to add on to his broken home, and his hard life his father was killed when he was a senior in high school. His father’s name was Michael Jerome Williams Sr. His mothers name was Denise Oher. Michael and his twelve brothers were provided with little to no support. Because of his poor parenting that he was offered he was frequently homeless and performed poorly as a student, repeating first and second grade and attending eleven different schools. Later in life Michael made it to high school. He attended a public school in Memphis. He was a natural athlete, playing football and basketball and being outstanding at both. During high school, he stayed with a man named Tony Henderson and his son Steven.
Remember the Titans movie presents an opportunity to look at the development stages of leadership over the course of a season. The movie takes place at a high school in Virginia in 1971. The school replaces its current Caucasian football coach – Bill Yoast with an African American coach – Herman Boone. Herman Boone as the head coach and Bill Yoast as the assistant coach form a successful football team through struggles and racial issues between team members and the people of the town they lived in.
The story Friday Night Lights takes place in a small town called Odessa, Texas in the year of 1988. After every year of football they hang a picture of each player who made All-State. This reminds the rest of them what glory looks like. Friday Night Lights gives a perspective of how every small town high schools are and is very popular for it, however it should be banned in our public schools because it contains profanity, racism terms, and sexually situations; the results of reading this book can cause more teenagers or even children to use offensive language, cause more racism than there already is, and be sexual at a young age.
H.G. Bissinger tells the story of the obsessive town of Odessa, Texas in his book, Friday Night Lights. This town has a toxic obsession with high school football and wastes away the week, only seeking the excitement of Friday nights that are filled with Panther football. The expectations held for the athletes of Odessa are suicidal and the preparation for life outside of high school is almost non existent. The town of Mount Vernon, Iowa also lives for Friday nights, however it has a healthy balance between the thrilling football nights and ordinary, day to day life. Mount Vernon athletes are held to reasonable standards and are thoroughly being prepared for a successful future. The town of Odessa is an insane town with twisted ideas that
Remember The Titans was a movie that was set in a very hostile time in our country. We were in the middle of what I like to call a civil war. Although there were no battles or gunfights our country was torn in half. There was an issue dealing with race in the United States. The movie, Remember the Titans is based on actual events that occurred in the year 1971. Mainly on the integration of a school called TC Williams High School. When the school was integrated the old football coach, Coach Yoast, was let go and a black coach Herman Boone was hired on. The main plot of this movie is regarding the coaching change in the school and the 1971 football season the TC Williams Titans have.
In Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger uses powerful examples of the harms, dangers, and unethical behavior in football in order to evoke an emotional response from his readers and change their opinions about high school sports, specifically football. Bissinger explores the obsession of the Texas town of Odessa with football, showing the side effects of this culture. In America, the benefits of high school sports are heavily touted, but the dangers are often not discussed. Bissinger offers a counter argument in this often one sided debate in order to challenge the domination of sports in high school environments. By appealing to the emotions of his readers, Bissinger is able to make an effective argument against the influence and excessive love of high school sports in America.
The movie “Remember the Titans” premiered September 2000, and takes place in Alexandrea, Virginia. High school football in Alexandrea is known as a way of life, they say it’s even more important than Christmas morning. It was in 1941 that black and whites began redistricting and had to attend school together. The city was in outrage after a black teenager had been killed that summer. When Coach Herman Boone, a black coach, is titled the new head coach after the schools integrate, the past white head coach, Bill Yoast and him are forced to work together and try to lead their team to victory. As the school year is about to begin, the football team is off to their training camp. Coach Boone groups the men into their various positions, requiring
“‘Athletics last for such a short period of time. It ends for people. But while it lasts, it creates this make-believe world where normal rules don’t apply. We build this false atmosphere. When it’s over and the harsh reality sets in, that’s the real joke we play on people’” (Bissinger xiv). “Friday Night Lights” shows the darker side of high school football. Players are taught to play games to win, and thats all that matters. Football players are put under a tremendous amount of pressure, almost enough to be considered unfair. Even though football is a “team sport”, pressure on individual players is unnecessary. Some players have the burden of the team, the city, their family, and their future, resting on their shoulders. These players
Many teenage kids have had the feeling before that they have tons of pressure on them. In Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club and H.G Bissinger’s novel Friday Night Lights teenagers have a difficult time dealing with all of the pressure that is being placed on them by their parents and the expectations that their parents have for them. In “Two Kinds” from Amy Tan’s novel the Joy Luck Club Jing Mei’s mother is trying to push her to become a prodigy and Jing Mei is beginning to crack under the pressure. Also in H.G Bissinger’s “Dreaming of Heroes” Mike Winchell is trying to live up to his late father’s legacy of being a great Permian football player.
One of the most widely noted sound elements of the football film, Friday Night Lights, amongst fans and critics is its frequent use of the Texas-based band, Explosions in the Sky. But I believe there is a more interesting sound element that is just as prominent in the overall soundscape of the film, and that is the use of radio in the film. Radio takes on the form of two identities in this film: a radio talk show as well as live game commentary. Because it is eventually revealed to the audience that both the live game commentator and radio talk show host are the same person, and that both are broadcast as radio content, it is acceptable to group these two factors into the
Some parents try to continue their athletic careers or have a successful athletic career through their kids on a daily basis. This can come from them not fulfilling lifetime dreams or having an unsuccessful career when they had the chance to participate in these athletic events. Charlie Billingsley is a very good example of one of those parents. He lives his old running back career through his son, Don Billingsley, who also plays running back. Charlie was a very successful player for the Permian football team. He played in college but let alcohol become more important than football. Charlie admitted to it in Friday Night Lights in a conversation. It is stated, “As Charlie Billingsley said, “I got him to live through,
The surprisingly non-fiction novel, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, was written by H. G. Bissinger in 1990. The story follows the Permian High School Panthers football team of 1998. The setting takes place in the town of Odessa, Texas. Bissinger describes this town as, “the setting for this book, but it could be anyplace in this vast land where, on a Friday night, a set of spindly stadium lights rises to the heavens to so powerfully, and so briefly, ignite the darkness.” (16). It highlights the teams attempt at a Texas state championship with plenty of distractions and obstacles along the way. The main barrier for players and staff of Permian High was racism. Some may find it hard to believe but in the town of Odessa, desegregation was simply a “suggestion” and the community refused to accept the fact that white and blacks are equal. It was not until the early eighties that Odessa desegregated.
Ever had a carpool to work or school? But you’ve probably never had a “Carpool Karaoke” with James Corden and some amazing stars riding shot gun.
When Michael first entered the American football team, he was not a motivated nor a good player where he does not have a single clue of what the rules or even how to play it; until Leigh Anne told Michael that the football team is his family and he should always support and protect his family members in any situation Because of that, Michael have became the terminator that helps his school team won for the spring football match in March.
Imagine yourself in a dark environment where you can only see sparks of light every few inches away from each other. Once the voice said the phrase "Let it glow", the moment of magic began to happen where lanterns were released and flying up toward the stars. Reflecting back at the moment, nothing can go beyond the experience of expressing our gratitude and love felt by ours heart to be written down and be able to sent it up toward the dark space. Although the actual experience can't be expressed through words, it is definitely heart warming to experience a special event like Lantern Fest. Keeping service in mind, Nevada Circle K volunteered at Lantern Fest on September 24 with different shifts throughout the day with registering, packing the
