“The Melodramatic Journey of “Boobie” Miles” The film Friday Night Lights, released in 2004, provides a visual representation depicting the sources of pride and success for a small Texas town. Odessa, Texas is where the film takes place, and its unique values and culture is what enables the town to be so infatuated to a high school football team. When the camera pans the city of Odessa throughout the film, it is clear that the town does not have much to brag about. The town contains family diners and small businesses, showing the small stature of the town; however, these same images provide a sense of closeness between the community. By the end of his melodramatic quest, he no longer bolsters about himself, but instead he becomes more involved with the success of the team. Boobie shows his new morality towards the end of the film when they are preparing for the state championship game. With his crutches, he makes the effort to go to the field and provide any assistance or advice he can offer. Boobie is showing glimpses of his reshaped identity including the result of his self-reflection with his efforts to help the team with no payback. Moreover, his transcendence to a moralistic view of sports contributes to the togetherness of the entire film. One aspect of the film that is culturally important to point out is the pride that Odessa was able to find within their own town. With not much else exciting around, football was able to bring the whole community together for the love of one collective thing. From this aspect of the film, I would argue that the cultural message to the audience would be to be embrace and be prideful of your
