1. The measure of a great society is the ability of its citizens to tolerate the viewpoints of those with whom they disagree. As Voltaire once said, “I may disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” (Columbia). This right to express one's opinion can be characterized as “freedom of speech.” The concept of “freedom of speech” is a Constitutional right in the United States, guaranteed under the First Amendment to the Constitution:

The novel On Liberty was written by the remarkable philosopher John Stuart Mill. Through the essay, he discusses phenomenal assumptions that are not examined oftentimes due to the reason that society perceives Freedom of Expression only as beneficial. Also, individuals often overlook the impact that the authority has on the fundamental freedom of free speech. They often truly believe that we are absolutely free to do everything they cherish. Mill deconstructs these ideas and enlightens us with new perspectives. This does not ultimately mean that all of the arguments that Mill highlights could be implemented within society. John Stuart Mill’s argument concerning free speech has elements that are both feasible and infeasible when applied in the real world.

Americans and free speech go together like burger king. You can always have it your way, but at what cost? Free speech is something that has been around for a long time, but has involved & seen various dilemmas that make you want to question it & your own freedom. Although free speech was guaranteed in the first amendment there have been many situations that in a complex way make you think about your own rights & the whole purpose of being born in the United States with them. If I was to wake up one day & decide that I wanted to freely create a protest expressing that I support gay rights or the LGBT community then by all means I should be able to do that without any interference.

Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right. Whether or not on a college campus, people (especially college students) should have the right to speak freely. Everyone does have the right to speak freely, because it is one of the twenty-seven amendments. Colleges all around the United States are now home to many restrictions on free speech. For example, the idea and use of “free speech zones” has made its way to colleges everywhere. A “free speech zone” is a sidewalk sized place where students are allowed to speak their minds freely on college campuses. I know what you’re thinking. This sounds ridiculous. Why are there specific places for people to speak their minds? Aren’t colleges suppose to be a place where students speak their minds and learn new things? Universities should not be able to put any restrictions on free speech.

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution gives the American people the right to Freedom of Speech, as stated in the Constitution: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” What is Freedom of Speech? It is the right to both verbal and non-verbal communication of thoughts and ideas. The people of America have the right to Freedom of Thought and Freedom of Expression.

The modern American conception of freedom of speech comes from the principles of freedom of the press, and freedom of religion as they developed in England, starting in the seventeenth century. The arguments of people like John Milton on the importance of an unlicensed press, and of people like John Locke on religious toleration, were all the beginning for the idea of the “freedom of speech”.

Freedom of speech is something that gives the people a voice and a right to express their concerns and beliefs that help make America a better place. John Stuart Mill’s On liberty is credited with being one of the most influential pieces of political theory ever written. His writings and societal observations on liberty, freedom of expression, and the limit of authority in a free society. Some of Mill’s most interesting claims were regarding freedom of speech for all opinions, a topic very relevant in the incredibly polarized American system. Mills views are even extended to protect what is considered hate speech which raises interesting societal questions. John Stuart Mill argues that it is never right for a government to censor free speech. Yet we do punish hate speech and have rules against derogatory or biased speech.

There are people in the United States that today don't understand what freedom speech actually means and what limitations it has. They believe that Freedom of Speech is saying whatever you want, whenever you want. But if they took the time to actually read the First Amendment they would realize that there is a time and a place where Freedom of Speech should and should not be used.

One of the most complex things in establishing in a government is determining how much freedom the citizens in a society has. Throughout history we have seen many different type of governments that include North Koreas’ dictatorship to the United States that has a government based on principles of democracy. In societies that have democratic governments such as the United States, England, France, and many other western European countries, the citizens have a high degree of freedom of speech. In addition, these people are allowed to have a high degree of freedom of thought. Although these are both very important to have in life because they allow you to express who you truly are, there is a difference between freedom of speech and freedom of thought. While there is a difference between freedom of speech and freedom of thought, English Philosopher John Stuart Mill provides his opinion on the importance of freedom of speech and freedom of thought in his book On Liberty.
