Freedom of speech, press, and religion is like a traffic light. The by-laws are always changing and everyone must obey them. What is freedom? Freedom is the act of doing what one pleases without the fear of government intervening or restraining the action. So, if our freedoms are restricted, are we really free? Personally, I do consider the freedoms of the Bill of Rights counts as freedom. Take Gregory Lee Johnson for example. Johnson assumed that the act of flag burning was protected under the First Amendment. So he went and desecrated a United States flag. On June 21, 1989, the Supreme Court made its final decision on the court case Texas vs Johnson. The court ruled in favor of Johnson. They agreed that though the act is viewed as offensive that it was protected under the First Amendment. They, however put laws in the way of that happening again without legal action. While some cases become huge and are taken to the Supreme Court, others stay on more local levels. That, however doesn’t make them any less important. The last court case was all about freedom of speech. Now let’s take a look at freedom of religion. Down in the little town of Negrete Louisiana a little boy got bullied for not being Christian. Lane is a Buddhist practicing boy who was forced to do things against his religion by staff of Negrete high school. The lawsuit even states “school officials have a longstanding custom, policy, and practice of promoting and inculcating Christian beliefs”. The school even had a picture of God hanging in the hallway. The teacher of the little boy was a science teacher and was only teaching about how God made the Earth. This case is one of many that helped take religion out of schools. Was it for the better? For the final piece of the first amendment, we will look at a case about freedom of press.
