Free Community College : Good Or Bad Essay

Since free tuition would lead to overcrowding in schools, more schools would have to be built to compensate-a blessing in disguise. Here, in our lovely state of California, more prisons have been built within the last couple of decades than universities. Thus, the state would become pressured into finally making up for lost time and start chipping away at the deficit our state has accrued. In an article by US News & World Report regarding Obama’s free community college idea, it was stated , “If more middle class students choose community college, “it could create an environment where states step up on funding.” Moreover, the article continued to state the following: “With a more diverse group of students, community colleges could gain political capital and funding that goes with it.” Subsequently, education (that is financially feasible for this at or below the poverty line) is essentially a ticket out of poverty, a chance to move forward and embody the American dream. Ergo, (using California as part of this hypothetical scenario) by opening free community colleges, more students are encouraged to attend, therefore more schools need to be built, and lastly, once the schools are built more people will strive for a better life-one devoid of being uneducated and at a higher risk for criminality. Should college be free? A current universal problem poses this question. In today’s world, full of public education standards that hold students maybe too high and in a generation bogged down by student debt, this issue qualifies as a problem more than many are maybe even willing to admit. While the prospect of free college proposes excellent ideals such as a stronger and smarter generation, no student loan problems, and a higher educated society, the truth may actually lie in the reality that making college free would do more hindrance than good and is not the answer to these problems. Free college would increase economic problems, according to Andrew P. Kelly, who says it would only shifts the cost to someone else. As well, it would also hinder our education system. Michael J. Petrilli writes that making college free would “probably shift billions of dollars a year from programs that help talented poor kids access higher education and improve our schools”. Although the concept of free higher education is becoming appealing to the general population, it ultimately would create more problems than it solved and do virtually nothing of huge significance to increase the level of intelligence in modern society.

Community college should be free for all students who want to attend school. There should be a set of rules applied to those that would take advantage of this privilege. In the United States, there are not very many programs that offer the opportunity for students to attend free colleges like other countries have. Some examples of the countries are Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany and France. The U.S. does have some programs that offer free tuition. For example Tennessee offers free tuition to students. The Tennessee Promise is a scholarship program that pays for your community college so you can go there tuition free. Another program is the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) in New York at the City University of New York. Community colleges should be free because it would not only attract more students, but would help students to focus more on school rather than thinking about how they are going to pay for their education. However, we need guidelines for applicants to attend such as maintaining a high GPA, giving back through community services hours, and other rules and guidelines to attract students that would continue to excel in their education and not waste the opportunity given to them to work towards a good career and give back.

Community college which is usually paid off by the government through grant and fee waivers for for low-income students is a way of continuing your growth after high school, although these institutions aren’t the very best type of education you can get it is a start. The type of students that usually go to community colleges are either low income and can't afford to pay for any other schools(without help from financial aid) or people who simply didn’t get the best grades in high school but still chose to continue their path of education. With the cons weighing out the pros, in my opinion, community college should not be free because it would take away the significance of going to college. I highly doubt that college students would want to slack off in classes that they are paying for. It works sort of as like an incentive since money isn't easily earned, so by allowing students to attend college for free would make community college more of a continuation of high school.

If you were to ask the seniors in my class what their plans are after high school, a majority of them will tell you college. Some will attend UCs, others CSUs, and some will attend community college.Some attend community college because their legal status hinders them to attend a four year university right away, but at community colleges that is not the case. The debate of whether community college should be free or not has been going on for many years. For the most part, many students have been able to have free education even if the are low income or high income. Most students are able to have equal educational opportunity to be able to learn for around 12 years. If it has been going on for 12 years, then why not make higher education free as well. Community college offers the ability to be able to finish one’s first 2 years of their general general education plan at a free or reduced price compared to completing general ed a a 4 year institution. Community college should be free because it allows lower income students the ability to have their tuition paid as well as their books and it allows students to be able to earn their bachelor's at a better rate.

Why Community college should not be free There are many reasons community college should not be free. First of all, if community college is free for two years commitment levels of students will drop. Also there will be less money for facilities.

Moreover, this type of debt looms large all over the auto debt, even more than all the credit card debt, according to the press release of Consumer Federation of America. That is a number that helps to imagine how huge it is. Consequently, many Americans are heavily in debt in their twenties because they strive to achieve a higher education, which leads to many downside effects on the whole country; however, an effective solution to solve this problem would be for the government to give free college to help people be debt-free.

The United States is already trillions of dollars in debt. Spending more on higher education would add to an economy that already has too much debt. It would therefore be very irresponsible. Just as someone should not spend more when they are in debt, the country should also not be spending more. In order to reduce the debt, the country would have to cut back on spending. The proposal for free college does just the opposite and is not what the economy needs to take care of its debt.
