It was a normal game for 17 year old, senior, quarterback Evan Murray. What Murray did not know was that he would never walk on the field again. It was the second quarter and Evan Murray took a hit on the backfield, he walked off the field with the help of teammates. Shortly after he collapsed on the sidelines and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died later that night from internal bleeding. (Kahler, 1) Between 2005 and 2014, alone, 92 high school football players died from injuries from football games. There were also injuries in the National Football League (NFL), players need to realize the damage that football causes. Most people do not understand that with every hit a little hit, life is being taken away from players, with every step on the field lives are being risked. While football is the most popular sport in America, the sport could cause serious brain damage and parents should prevent their child from playing because of the damage that it can cause.
Repeated hits in football may cause brain damage in an older age. “The hippocampus, a part of the brain involved in memory, was found to be smaller in 28 former NFL players as compared with a control group of men of similar age and education” (NewsRx, 1). Compared to a group of men that had not played football, former NFL players were found to have a smaller hippocampus. Playing football is damaging to a very important part of the brain and it could be prevented. The fact shows that it is proven that people
In America, football is huge entertainment industry and brings in lots of money annually. This doesn’t mean that football is just there for the money, but it provides life long impact for some people. Football is used as a brotherhood or a family, and provides opportunities for kids to learn how to be a teammate. The head coach for J.H. Rose High School, discussed how he loves his team and wants nothing but the best for them (CNN, 2012). In addition, it is a matter of autonomy to be discussed. If a player knows the risks of football, it should be their choice whether they want to play or not. One of the football players in the video said he knows the risks and he’s willing to take them (CNN, 2012). On the other hand, some would argue the principle of beneficence and that doctors are merely trying to save the lives of many young men. In the video, it was discussed that tau proteins become present in the brain after multiple collisions to the head (CNN, 2012). Tau proteins are known to become present in the brain when an older person has Alzheimer’s or dementia (CNN, 2102). Also, is football worth a life, two lives? How many young men have to lose their lives to head trauma caused by football hits, to realize this sport is deadly. Zach Rogers was a teammate and friend of JaQuan Waller, and said how they thought JaQuan was okay and just got hit pretty hard
Football changes lives in positive and negative ways. Injuries become quite prevalent in the sport, but I still take the risk every time I step on the football field. According to CNN, in 2014 eleven deaths found their way into the paper as a direct cause from football injuries. An example includes seventeen-year-old high school senior Andre Smith from Bogan High School situated in Chicago Illinois. On October 23 2014, Andre Smith played his last
There’s no doubt that concussions in football has become a major problem, not just for the professional athletes, but for kids of all ages from age 8 to 19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown that concussion have doubled in the last decade and The American Academy of Pediatrics says that, “emergency room visits for concussions in children ages 8 to 13 years old has doubled, and concussions have risen 200 percent among teens ages 14 to 19 in the last decade” (Keith Dunlap, The Oakland Press). This shows that the seriousness of concussions is not just an issue at a pro level but an issue throughout all levels of play. The risk is definitely present when you play football but it shouldn’t stop parents from letting their children participate in the sport. Playing organized sports such as football isn’t just a place to get injured, it’s a place where your children can learn the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, toughness, competitiveness, they learn succeed, and also they learn about failure. The parents who don’t allow their children to play sports don’t let their kids learn about these important lessons of organized sports. Football is also a way for kids to take their anger and struggles out in the game and help them express themselves. It can also be a way for kids in bad situations to get a way out, to try and reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Concussions, injuries, and suffering- those are what always happen in football games. Football is the most popular sport in America, people like the sound of “uh....” when football players hit each other. In the documentary “League of Denial: NFL’s Concussion Crisis” by Frontline, the connection between playing football and brain injuries is analyzed. Steve Almond’s, “Against Football: One Fan’s Reluctant Manifesto” shows how football impacts his life and how evil the NFL is. Also other books that say the same things are “Ban College Football” by Intelligence2 Debates. They want to show how much impact human beings can receive when they play football and how football’s safety rules change to protect their players. Most of the time, resources always talk about CTE -Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy- an injury that can result in a memory loss. The illness comes from brain trauma that is caused by violent concussions and makes the tau protein, which actually is not supposed to be in the brain, stay inside the brain and kill all the neurons. The documentary by Frontline focuses on how many people are being affected by this problem and how the NFL reacts to all the allegations
In today’s day and age, baseball is no longer considered the past-time of America. Football has gradually become more and more popular and is nothing short of the most watched and anticipated season in America. In the nation today there are 3 million kids who participate in youth football, which consists of children age five to 16. Also, there are an estimated 1.1 million high school football athletes, and 100,000 players at the collegiate level. While the sport is arguably the nation’s most popular sport, it may come with consequences. Over the past few years, concerns have been raised about the risk that players may face from taking repeated hits to the head. Studies show that more than 50 former professional football players have suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a brain disease caused by impact. The question is, how can these possibly life-ending risks be lessened or even ended.
Referring back to the original article, I cannot find the study which conclusively states that playing football leads to “brain damage, in the form of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, post-concussion syndrome, depression, and other long-term head-related injuries.” The really scary stuff (CTE) occurs mostly in NFL players—that is, in less than 0.1 percent of the about 1.8 million football players (summing those in Pop Warner, high school, the NCAA, and the NFL) in the United States, which seems statistically negligible. Moreover, NFL players move further off the grid with the length of their season (last
This article portrays how playing football can cause negative long term effects on your body. Frontline reported on numbers from the Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University, where researchers studied the brains of 165 people who played football at the high school, college, or professional level. They found evidence of CTE in 131 of them—79 percent. Of the brains studied, 91 of them belonged to former NFL players, and 87 of those 91 (96 percent) had signs of CTE. In an attempt to further reduce concussions some teams are considering adopting a tackling style similar to that of rugby, where players
As I said, football players risk injury, “ Football players are nearly seven times more likely to be injured during a game than in practice”(Burris 1). Some of the injuries they may fall to are concussions. It is known that “Concussions make up 7.4 percent of all injuries in college football players” (Burris 1). Many of the football injuries can affect their lives forever. “The athletes also reported more limitations in daily activities and more major and chronic injuries” (Burris 1).
Football is a dangerous sport to play it because of many injuries. About 212,000 children are sent to the emergency rooms because of all the injuries they had received, all the concussions and some injuries that can scar you for life and probably can end your sports career. 13- year old Isaiah kahut was at a football camp preparing for his first season as a running back for skyview High school in Vancouver, Washington. The second day of camp his plans came crushing down around him, he was running with the ball when he was tackled. His head smacked the turf hard; The moment he got up he knew something wasn’t right. Doctors diagnosed him with a serve concussion a brain injury resulting from a blow to the head. For two weeks, Isaiah had to rest
Football is a rough sport. Many fans of the game watch it for the hard hits. These hard hits and the potential for injury is part of what makes the game so exciting. Some people say that football is too brutal and should be banned. Parents all over the United States don’t allow their children to play because of the risk of head injuries. Others allow their sons, and every now and then their daughters, to play and risk injury for a chance to earn a college scholarship and for a small percentage of players, the chance to play in the National Football League (NFL).
This paper connects contact sports with degenerative brain diseases. It also shows that CTE is not only connected to football because of the continuous tackling inducing trauma to the brain, but also soccer where heading the ball can often cause brain damage. This is supported by research of retired NFL football players and soccer players whose brains showed evidence of CTE. Also when the Mayo Clinic studying the brains of those who did not participate in contact sports showing no evidence of CTE. Based on scientific evidence degenerative brain diseases such as CTE are caused by successive concussions. Since concussions are one of the most common brain injuries seen in contact sports today there is a definite association between contact sports and degenerative brain diseases.
Young and talented football player, Jaquan Waller, known as the star running back for the Greenville Rose High School football team, ended his skyrocketing career unexpectedly. In 2008, Jaquan left the field just completing any ordinary carry and tackle play, when he suddenly collapsed on the sidelines. Jaquan died the next morning leaving his family, team members, and coaches in mourn. Two days prior to his tragic death, he took a massive hit at practice and experienced a mild concussion. Like many other victims to this syndrome, Jaquan unknowingly endured a entire game with a brain injury. Dr. James R. Andrews states, “Every year, more than three and a half million children under the age of fourteen require medical treatment for injuries incurred while participating in team or individual sports, and this number is on the rise…Yet, despite these statistics, sports injuries are largely preventable, especially children and adolescents.” As these statistics start to grow, more and more parents are contemplating whether or not to let their kids play “dangerous” sports. But
Recurrent concussions can lead to late life cognitive Impairment In retired professional football players. 50,000 head injuries result in death each year and most injuries are classified as mild traumatic. Traumatic Brain Injuries have been classified as significant, emotional, and functional disabilities. This study wanted to show if recurrent concussions lead to neurodegenerative dementing disorders, Parkinson's, Alzheimer’s, and psychiatric disorders such as depression. The patients in this study played at least 2 years of professional football but their age group varies from recent professional players to professional players before World War ll.
Football can be a very dangerous sport. And although those who play the game believe that they are being protected by the helmets that they wear, the truth is that this may not be the case. In a recent study released by the American Academy of Neurology it has been found that “protection against concussion and complications of brain injury is especially important for young players, including elementary and middle school, high school and college athletes, whose still-developing brains are more susceptible to the lasting effects of trauma”(Science Daily, 2014). The study also found that standard football helmets worn by the majority of players on the field today, only reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by 20 percent compared to not wearing a helmet at all (Science Daily, 2014).
Would you be willing to play a sport that could potentially end your life at any moment? In any sport, it is noted that you are more prone to injury versus the average person since you are putting your body at risk. It is known that football is one of the most dangerous sports because it has a high-risk for concussions. On an average, about 47 percent of athletes who play high school football receive sports-related concussions. SInce 1997, 50 high school level and younger football players were pronounced dead after complications due to their concussions. Because of these intriguing statistics, the sport of football should be banned. Football should be banned as a whole because of health concerns regarding concussions, long-term effects from concussions, and mental disorders.
