“You were born for a reason and you will relive until that task is completed,” a motivator one said. One incarnates to learn something he or she hadn’t learned in the previous life. Questions about this may still remain like the following: does it include personality traits? Is one predestined to his or her fate? What determines what our next life will be like? Sophocles once said, “Fate has terrible power. You cannot escape it by wealth or war. No fort will keep it out, no ships outrun it,” but is one’s fate planned out before birth? Some may say that people are predestined to their fate, while others believe people have the ability to change it if they want. (89) Oedipus had been a lost cause since the beginning. The Greeks’ fate concept is well played in this play. Fate is not something one can run away because even knowing about it or not, one will still be dragged into the fate he or she has. One can change things about himself or herself, but at the end it was in his or her fate to change. The dimension one is in coexist with the many others one is not able to see. One may be living different lives, but at one point he or she will end up in the same point of life as the other dimensions of life. Others may argue that Oedipus downfall wasn’t his faith, but his hubris. Hubris is excessive pride or self- confidence. His hot temper led him to kill his father and other men because he was being too self- confident. However, if this were to be the case, Oedipus wouldn’t consider running away from home in the first play. If he truly is self- confident, it would not be necessary to have to listen to other’s opinions. Oedipus would have blocked that out. Not knowing, one’s fate has already been planned out. Actions done to prevent something one knows to have been predicted in his or her life will end up being the same as not doing anything.
