Fate And Free Will In Sophocles Oedipus The King

Fate vs Free Will as it relates to the character Oedipus OR Adam and Eve. Consider: behavior, outcomes, how the choices were made, or were the choices made for them?

Sophocles wrote a tragic play, Oedipus the King, in which the protagonist, Oedipus, discovers his fate. Thebes, the area currently ruled by Oedipus, has fallen under a plague so Creon, Oedipus’ brother in law, is sent to ask Apollo, a messenger for the Gods, for advice on how to save Thebes. Oedipus discovers that to bring Thebes out of the plague he needs to find and persecute the murderer of Laius, the former king of Thebes. Oedipus searches high and low for anyone who might have information and finds a blind prophet, Tiresias, who claims Oedipus killed Laius. However, Oedipus believes this cannot be true because Jocasta, Laius’s former wife and now Oedipus’ wife, was prophesied to have a son who would kill Laius and have sex with Jocasta.

In Sophocles play Oedipus the King, Sophocles depicts the horrible fate of Oedipus, a pompous, arrogant young ruler. The story begins in the Greek town of Thebes. A plague has descended upon the Thebians causing death and famine throughout the land. Oedipus, being the heroic king, takes full responsibility to find out the cause of their aliments. While working to discover the source of the plague, Oedipus stumbles upon the tragic truth of his heritage and the horrifying implications of his appointment to the throne. The Greeks world view was a tragic one. Sophocles played an vital role in imparting the into importance of destiny into society. “Oedipus Rex is what is known as the tragedy of destiny. Its tragic effect is said to lie in contrast between the supreme will of the gods and the vain attempts of mankind to escape the evil that threatens them. Oedipus was the King of Thebes who is investigating to find the murder of their friend Lais. The citizens were begging Oedipus to lift the plague and save their city Thebes. Oedipus sent Creon out to try to figure out some deals on the murder of Lais, but little did Oedipus know that he himself killed Lais. If they find the man who murdered Lais this will end the plague. Oedipus then comes to find out that he is one of the suspects of Lais murder. When Oedipus was a young boy, that he is destined to kill his father and marry his own mother Oedipus’s later find out that his father is Lais. Does fate control us or do we control fate? This question has been posed many times by numerous amounts of people. The struggle with answering this question is that one cannot know their effect on fate if that fate is not known. To combat the difficulties of answering this question directly one can look toward philosophy and literature to approach this question in a more direct manner. Through the philosophic ideologies presented in Epictetus’s Handbook and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, one can observe how to approach fate and free will. In addition, looking at the literature of Macbeth, Oedipus The Tyrant, and Frederick Douglass’s Narrative, one can analyze examples of the relationship between fate and free will. Taking these philosophic approaches and applying them to literary examples, one can see how fate merely establishes events in life while free will allows for change to it.

Before the play begins, Oedipus had left Corinth and eventually happened to stumble upon the city of Thebes. As stated before, Oedipus left his hometown because an oracle had told him that he is destined to to sleep with his mom and kill his dad. Nevertheless, in leaving Corinth and coming to Thebes, unconsciously causing the prophecy into coming true when he murders Laius at the triple crossroads and marries Jocasta which are his birth parents. Without a doubt, Oedipus of course did not want any of this to occur but some things are inevitable. To further more in ways Oedipus's actions lead to his downfall is when Oedipus endeavors to discover why the plague is taking place in Thebes. So when Oedipus sends Creon on a quest to Delphi and also request Tiresias to come to the palace to only unearth the disheartening truth of that he is the source of the plague. Fatally Oedipus just wanted to investigate the root of the plague and save the people of Thebes yet, everything goes spiraling south that results the death of his mom and his exile. Disregarding all the events that transpired Oedipus refused to give up and calls forth the sole survivor of the massacre at the triple crossroads to come converse with him. In Oedipus The King by Sophocles, Oedipus, the great king of Thebes, suffers a reversal of fortune when he attempts to change his fate. Oedipus is prophesied to kill his father and to marry his mother so he leaves Corinth to come to Thebes so this prophecy does not come true. As Thebes is being countered by a plague, Oedipus is trying everything he can to help the citizens. Throughout the play, Oedipus seeks knowledge about the plague later leading to his downfall. Oedipus is seen as a hero to his city due to his contributions, but he soon has a tragic ending when he seeks for knowledge.

Whether it be paper or plastic or picking colleges, humans go through many choices, both big and small throughout their lifetime. In addition, these choices can determine the overall outcome of fate, dependent on if these people practice a religion and what religion that they practice. Various pieces of literature take this common concept of fate versus choice and utilize it as a manner to help advance the plot. One of Sophocles’ greek tragedies, Oedipus the King, does an excellent job in articulating the role of fate versus choice in literature. Oedipus the King integrates both faith and choice, however choice is heavily superseded by fate.

As I was reading the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles, I realized that the author was talking about two main things. The first thing this play is talking about is fate and the second thing is blindness. As a Christian I was so happy when I first realized that this play was about fate, but reading this play through the end was kind of painful to me.

The play is filled with suffering and a fate that Oedipus cannot run from. But this fate that Oedipus was running from was not his fault, this fate isn't something he can change by making the right decisions. Sadly for Oedipus his fate was already decided before he was born. As it always has been and as it always will be fate is stronger than free will. Although this is true this almost never stops someone from trying to fix the mistakes that lead to this fate even if the mistakes that lead to it weren't their own.
