Dangers Of Fast Food Fast food is delicious, but is it deadly? Over the years the fast food industry has made larger proportions to meet the growing demand. The industry thrives off of competition, and is constantly trying to one up each other. Places like Wendy’s, Burger King, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell provide large amounts of food for a bargain. The creation of dollar menus and five dollar meal deals has influenced more people to dine out. According to University Hospitals, 44% of Americans eat out at least once a week, every day 34% of children consume fast food, and children get 12% of their calories from fast food (North Ohio Heart). Fast food is taking over people's diets. The 2004 Documentary Super Size Me talks about the truth behind the fast food industry, but mostly McDonald’s. Morgan Spurlock, the producer and the man doing the experiment, decided that he wanted to see what kind of effect that McDonald’s could have on the human body. He decides to go on a thirty day quest, where he only eats McDonald's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. His reason for this experiment was to expose the results eating fast food has on your body. Fast food is a big contributor to obesity, high cholesterol, heart failure, liver failure, etc. Spurlock also mentions how advertising is how places like McDonald’s persuade people to eat at their restaurants. By placing billboards on the side of highways and
“Every day in the United States, nearly 200,000 people are sickened by foodborne disease, 900 are hospitalized, and fourteen die. . . . Most of these cases are never reported to the authorities or adequately diagnosed. The widespread outbreaks that are detected . . . represent a small fraction of the number that occurs.’’ (Schlosser Eric) Fast food causes health problems with the heart all the way to the liver. The sugar in all fast food can raise blood pressure, which can create a stork. Hamburger noodles and fries contains a lot of salt/ sodium, and we eat those products every day. Sodium causes high blood pressure; high blood pressure leads to heart failure that can cause your heart to stop any second. Eating fast food is very hard to stop, due
Fast food has a harmful effect on society because it can cause obesity. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry believes obesity “Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise.” (parag. 1).The causing and treating of obesity is complex but it is the most recognizable disease. Consistently eating fast food and a poor can lead to obesity in anyone. The risks of obesity include an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, fast food “Studies have shown that over the past four decades, consumption of food eaten away from home has also risen alarmingly” (parag. 8). This means that fast food is high in fat, sugar, salt, carbs, calories, saturated and trans fats. This type of eating leads to a higher body mass index or gained weight. Children and adolescents are at a
This rhetorical analysis is over the effects of fast food and the health of the person eating it. “Eat fast, die young” is the motto of the second spoof ad. The reality is that this spoof ad is accurate. Studies over the past 30 to 50 years show that fast food and junk food is extremely unhealthy and causes obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and several other diseases. Most fast food restaurants serve high caloric and low-density foods. That means one get a lot of calories and very little nutrition value from the food. Obesity rates have steadily climbed over the past 60 years as have the number of fast food restaurants. “The prevalence of obesity and obesity related diseases has increased rapidly in the U.S. since the mid-1970s. At the same time, the number of fast food restaurants more than doubled over the same time period, while the number of other restaurants grew at a much slower pace.” (Currie Vigna Moretti Pathania 1) Saying the fact that when one eats substantial amounts of fast food, the health of that person will drastically decrease is definitely true.
Fast food is exactly how it sounds: food that can be quickly produced for a simple meal. Although they may be satisfactory, they are anything but healthy. Eating fast food is appetizing which is one of the main reasons it is so popular. Not only does it taste good to many, but it is inexpensive, too! America is the number one place for fast food. There are over 160,000 fast food restaurants in the United States and over 50 million Americans are served fast food daily. The frequency of eating fast food is also a problem because according to statisticbrain.com 44 percent of Americans confessed to consuming fast food once per week. What people do not realize is the harm that fast food is doing to their body. Not only is fast food a
Around 160,000 fast food franchises have been opened all over America. America is the most obese country in this world. Healthy food is supplement rich, yet fast food has a tendency to be poor in nutrients and high in calories. Know that fast food can satisfy our day by day calories requirements; not only it gives us calories, but it also harms our health with other ingredients. For instance, fast food is high in soaked fats and trans fats. In addition, it has additives, chemicals, and artificial flavors. Fast food impacts our health and causes infections, for example, heart disease, diabetes, high blood sugar and high blood pressure. On the other hand, healthy food provides the best nutrients and protects our body from sickness, since it contains vitamins, proteins, and minerals. Fast food is addictive and unhealthy. (Obesity in America) (Chronic
According “Eating More; Enjoying Less” from Pew Research Center by Scott Keeter, there are many different statistics that play a part in the consumption of fast food. According to the Pew Research Center and the research by Keeter, “fifty million Americans are served daily in some type of a fast food restaurant” (Keeter).According to Food Safety News, a study is completed by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington and Bill Marler reports on this research information saying that “the IHME identified the top ten risk factors for health loss in 2010 and the number of deaths attributable to each one” (Marler). During this study, the IHME found that diets are the number one leading cause of death. High blood pressure, high body mass index, physical inactivity, high blood sugar, and high total cholesterol all also follow closely behind on the list of risk factors, according to the IHME. Marler claims that fast food leads to every single one of these risk factors in one way or another, and that “fast food kills more people than smoking, alcohol, and illegal drug use all combined” (Marler). Austin Bryn worries that diseases and sickness will develop at a much earlier age and will cause problems for many kids as they are not getting the nutrients their
America is one of the fattest countries in the world and is getting fatter by the second. Fast food used to be simple, small portions, less calories, and even simple menus. Now wherever you turn, there is a restaurant just right around the corner. Just in the past ten years the range of food choices has emerged. Fast food is the reason why health problems have become a major health issue in the United States. Although fast food has made it easier on Americans, Americans are at risk of preventable health issues, like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes; therefore, fast food has impacted Americans in a negative way.
As you’re driving home from work in the evening how many different fast food places do you pass? Just in a two mile radius there is probably a McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-a, and many others. In David Zinczenko’s “Don’t Blame the eater,” he makes a point that fast food restaurants don’t have to provide information on their food. Zinczenko also mentions that not only is obesity an issue, but diabetes rates have seemed to rise, causing children issues and money spent to treat it to increase. Children are big targets to the fast food industry. With fast food being as unhealthy as it is and companies not being required to tell its food ingredients, obesity, diabetes, and more importantly the cost to fix these health issues has increased tremendously, and for that reason fast food restaurants need to be regulated.
Although fast food and drive through restaurants are easily accessible and “fast”, they are very harmful and put the body at risk for all sorts of diseases and cancers. They are full of processed gooey “meats” and they are anything but natural and nutritious to the body or mind. There are a number of unhealthy ingredients that are put into the foods served at a fast food restaurant, and the following question abides, “What’s really in this delicious cheeseburger..?” look it up, the results will be shocking. That mouth-watering Big Mac with the so called “world’s best fries” and sugary soft drink everyone craves may contain a whole days’ worth of the recommended calorie intake. The Big Mac alone contains 540 calories plus the 210 calories in your Classic Coca-Cola and the 380 calories in that medium fry (“Fast Food Nutrition Facts”). The daily calorie intake should be 1000-2000 calories per person according to OAC, but that one meal alone is 1130 calories. Talk about a fattening diet.
Fast food has without a doubt changed the way people eat in America, and is partly to blame for diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. According to Murray (40) more than 300, 000 every year are related to obesity. Individuals should know what they are consuming and how it is prepared or made; they should spend their hard earned money on restaurants that make healthy food. So why is fast food unhealthy? Fast food may look tasty and appealing, however, they contain a myriad of hidden health hazards that are dangerous if consumed in large quantities and are a primary cause of obesity, particularly in children. The effects of eating fast food on a person’s health are: increase in blood pressure, a delay in the metabolic rate, increase in the levels of bad cholesterol, destabilization of blood sugar levels, and weakening of the immune system. Furthermore, the effects of fast food include obesity, nutritional deficiencies, and cardiac problems among other health hazards. No one is forcing individuals to eat fast food, but the fact is that fast food restaurants will change when consumers demand changes. Even if three percent of Americans complained about fast food, it would make a substantial drop in
Food is obviously something we need as humans, without it we wouldn’t be able to survive very long, but what if what we are consuming on a daily basis is already taking a negative effect on our health? Fast food first started off with a simple hot dog and hamburger stand, now it has spread all over our nation. There are broad ranges of fast foods being served in school and hospital cafeterias, drive through, shopping
In 2004, a movie called Supersize Me was a documentary that came out to show the effects of eating fast food consecutively for 30 days. Morgan Spurlock decided to record and document his experience of eating Mcdonalds for every meal for 30 days to show the world what eating fast-food frequently could do to a person's health and body. So, for 30 days he ate Mcdonald's greasy sodium and sugar filled food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which at the end of the 30 days he had gained weight, damaged his liver, developed depression, and lost sexual function. Spurlock had concluded that living off of nothing but fast-food can be detrimental to a person's health both physically and mentally and supports my point that fast-food can be unhealthy if eaten frequently, but also rewarding with the right food choices and if eaten in moderation.
Every day, nearly one-third of U.S. children ages four to nineteen eat from a fast food restaurant this adds on about six extra pounds per child every year and increases their risk of obesity (Fast Food). In my research I learned a lot about the health risks that come with eating fast food. Fast food causes childhood obesity rates in America to increase because of its convenience, ingredients, and lack of telling people what is in the food.
Look around and see all the news and articles concerning the health risk of eating fast food in America and even other countries. In fact, the fast food is truly killing us. They leave out important warnings and try to hide important nutritional facts that counteract the ways of trying to eat healthy. The fast food companies should be taking responsibility for what they are doing to their customers. Zinczenko says “If you pour what you 've been served, you 're suddenly up around 1,040
The fast food industry provides quick, cheap, and easy access to foods that in the customers opinion, is very delicious, and affordable, however this food which millions of people around the world are constantly consuming, could actually cause major health problems, and weight gain in the long run. Major fast food companies throughout the world know what they are doing when it comes to marketing towards all types of people. Some people will find numerous different things to blame for the epidemic of fast food making individuals overweight. In recent research on, or discussions of the fast food industry having an effect on people's health, a controversial issue has been raised, and that is the fact that this problem affects not only
