Unbreakable Relationships The epic poem, The Odyssey by Homer, throughout the Odyssey there are many relationships that represent love and loyalty between two people. The reader learns about the characters’ relationship throughout Odysseus journey back home from the Trojan War. These relationships are between man and family, also between man and servant. For example, the relationships between Odysseus with Penelope and Telemachus. Also the relationship between Telemachus and Eumaeus. Odysseus relationship with Penelope indicates the sturdy marital values. Penelope and Odysseus love each other even though they are separated for twenty years. Odysseus uses his intelligence to get domestic to Penelope, and Penelope makes use of her intelligence
Penelope was left behind when Odysseus left for the trojan war, but he didn’t come back after that. Penelope had to take care of their son, their estate, and their servants for 20 years. On top of all of that she had suitors demanding her attention. In all of this she stayed strong and independent, and despite the pressure of the suitors she stayed loyal to Odysseus, even when she didn’t even know if he was alive or not. Penelope’s character is also very clever and sly. She told the suitors that she would remarry after she finishes her weaving project, but each night she undoes everything she did that day. When the suitors find out about it they demand she choose someone to remarry. Penelope uses her intelligence and slyness again as she tells them whoever wins an archery contest using Odysseus bow, which only he could use, she would marry. Penelope is also very kind, which we see when she interacts with the servants and her son. Penelope is a very well portrayed character and she is needed in the story to be someone Odysseus could always be someone to come back
Odysseus’s love for Penelope has not been changed even though he spends almost eight years with goddesses. When Odysseus meet his mother in the House of Death, he asks her about his family and royal rights. His shows the values of kingship for him as he says, “do my royal rights still lie in their safekeeping?” (XI.269). So let’s look to the feeling of kingship that is internalized within him due to a period of hardship.
Despite this, Odysseus treats her well and they bond later through sharing of childhood stories. Throughout these first 50 pages Penelope often reflects on how she was portrayed by history versus how she behaved in actuality. Her reputation as a modest devoted wife was built on misreadings of the true actions of a child. I really enjoyed how Atwood
