The author Edgar Allan poe used many descriptive words to establish the mood of the story “The Raven”, and there are many ways to prove these statements as Edgar Allan Poe uses repetition, alliteration and the rhyming of words to help set the mood of the story. For example as the story goes on he uses descriptive tones to again help the reader understand that the mood is full of mystery and sadness. Using such words as “midnight dreary”, and “quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore” but that is only in the first stanza while there is still much more evidence of how Edgar Allan Poe set the mood throughout the story. While in stanza two he begins to explain it was a “bleak december”, Clearly setting the sad and seemingly depressing mood. But as the stanza moves on the sadness is filled with creepy suspense as it states that not only the speaker is up late at night on a late, and bleak December night, that the statement “And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor” finding out that the statement is explaining how the fire in the fireplace is slowly dying out, and the very few pieces of coal the “dying embers” seem to create creepy ghost like shadow around the room which creates the depressed and the creepy suspense filled mood. The suspense and creepy mood only continues to grow as it describes “the rustling sounds of the purple curtain” getting closer, and closer listening to the sounds it describes the speaker freaking out
Written by Edgar Allan Poe, “The Raven” is a famous short poem known for the dark fantasy that it portrays. From the mindset of a first person narrative, one may experience the tale through the eyes of a haunted man who is in mourning for the death of his beloved Lenore. As this man sits in his chamber, within a dark and dreary December night, a “raven of the saintly days of yore” visits him. The raven is no ordinary bird, for it is like a ghost, silent, yet it answers every inquiry the man presents in it’s own personal way. This dark and tragic tale grabs one’s attention through the rhythmic, yet melancholy verses, through the classic references, and through the dark imagery that all play a critical role within this poem.
The rhyme scheme and musicality is a big influence on the poetic structure that contributes to the pathos. The chosen language used is a also a contributor to the pathos based writing in this poem. Because “The Raven” is a poem and not a complete piece of writing, the use of pathos is used to connect. Poe wanted this piece to be viewed as very dynamic and forthright, which is the way his language was portrayed in his work. He did not his work to be left to interpretation, he wanted his language to reflect his true meaning and feeling. Readers can gain a better understanding behind his words, and that creates the understanding of what the poem is about; allowing a deeper connection to be formed. This piece is almost song-like, as words are connected rhymingly, allowing the piece and the audience to meld into more than just a story. It also appeals on a bigger scale because of this structure of rhymes and it’s very continuous flow of words. Giving this poem more attention for the reason that it can be enjoyed for its poetic scheme alone and doesn’t need to lure in the sense of literature. This piece appeals to readers due to its emotionally driven story. The reader can relate to the emotions of the story that Poe is portraying. From the loss of Lenore, to the madness and insanity the man faces from this loss. A
The nineteenth century poet Edgar Allen Poe makes use of several literary devices in order to create a gloomy atmosphere in his poem “The Raven”. Alliteration, rhyme, onomatopoeia, assonance, and repetition are used to contribute to the melodic nature of the work and provide an almost “visual” representation of his gothic setting. Poe is a master of using these writing techniques. “The Raven” is one of his most popular works. This is certainly due, in part to his use of these literary devices in this piece.
I chose Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” for my poem. In the poem there is a gloomy tone set for the entirety of the poem. How does Poe do that? What poetic devices does Poe use? Poe is well known poet that has many poems that are set in this type of mood. I do believe this one is different than the rest. Poe uses the raven as a symbol of weariness. I would argue Poe had a lot of demons at the time of this poem that he was fighting, and the raven itself, Poe speaks about in the “The Philosophy of Composition”, is meant to symbolize Mournful and Never-ending Remembrance. Poe is using the raven to symbolize the loss of many loved ones that Poe had to endure. Poe immediately sets the tone of the poem by writing in the very first line “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary...” he is describing the night as dull and depressing by the word choice he uses. The narrator of “The Raven” is dealing with the death of his wife, Lenore, and is constantly trying to forget his lost love as Poe shows:
There is always a reason why a piece of literature is written. Whether it is for for the author’s voice to be heard, to entertain its reader, or to spread knowledge, there is always a purpose behind the work. In many cases in poetry, the piece is written as an outlet for emotion, the chance to write down their deepest feelings. Edgar Allan Poe had a drastic life and suffered from deep depression, so he was bound to be an excellent poet. In his most famous poem, “The Raven”, it is evident that he was suffering from self-torture and anxiety. As one reads this poem, many things can be learned about Poe himself, what his life was like, and what emotions he has bottled up inside of him. A poem is an outlet for an author, and through a thorough analysis of the work, one can get an understanding of much more than the story that is told. Through “The Raven”, one can see the world through Edgar Allan Poe’s eyes.
Poe also utilizes imagination in his poem titled “The Raven”. In “The Raven”, the narrator has lost his wife, and is wondering if he will ever be able to find true love again. In the poem’s
Mood is how the story makes a reader feel. Poe created mood by describing his settings and using “haunted words”, like ghost. According to “The Raven”, the orator announced, “Ah, distinctly, I remember it was in the bleak of December; And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.” The setting described by the speaker makes a reader not feel happy and pleasant, but instead an erie feeling because ghosts and death usually vibe more to a scary mood. Also, the narrator mentioned, “I took from my pocket a pen-knife, opened it, grasped the poor animal by the throat and deliberately cut one of its eyes from the socket!” The announcer is vividly describing him abusing a poor animal by taking its eye out of its socket, which imply would horrify readers. Poe creates mood by hauntedly describing the setting of his stories.
“Nevermore,” the infamous word that directly connects you to a well-known poem by Edgar Allan Poe. “The Raven” is a literary work that has gone down in ages as being a timeless classic that transcends your senses as you dive into this sinister tale. Poe had a life of hardships but still was able to prevail in life becoming a great writer writing many poems and stories that are mysterious and prevalent today. “The Raven” has many displaced factors that make it seem as though Poe is truly referencing his life throughout the work. The poem takes you through many different feelings as you dwell on the meanings that the text could have. “The Raven” was written in 1845 close to the time his wife Virginia Clemm was being treated for tuberculosis. This infamous poem seems to be closely related to his current life and the feelings that he was having towards his wife.
Description and word choice play a key role in portraying a dark tone in Poe’s poems. In ”The Raven” Poe writes “Ah, distinctly I remember

The poem I picked is The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. I found many forms of figurative language in this poem but I will be talking about three different types. I will be talking about rhyme, personification, as well as metaphors. The theme of this poem is death. About the sorrow, pain, worry, and just everything that goes along with the death of someone you love. The tone of this poem is melancholic which means great sadness or even depression.
In The Raven, Poe used alliteration with the intention to build a suspenseful mood and dread in the audience. The narrator of
The poem I selected is “The Raven” written by popular American writer, Edgar Allan Poe. I chose this poem because of previous memories of reading several of Edgar Allan Poe’s writings. I remember in 8th grade when my teacher introduced the whole class to a short story called “The Tell Tale Heart”. I loved the poem a lot, I liked how gory, detailed, and interesting it was. It went perfectly for the time of year it was, which was October. Soon after we were done reading the poem, the whole grade went on a class trip, to see live performances of several of Poe’s short stories and poems being performed by actors. It was fun and the actors were very talented and they captured every emotion perfectly. Overall, it was a very good experience.
The mood is created by the setting and character descriptions. The mood is established in order to appeal to the reader in an emotional and psychological way. The poem, "The Raven", has a mood of mystery and fear. This mood is created from the beginning of the poem when the author describes the place he was in. It says he was in his house, and that it was dark, raining, and it was lonely. All of the details that Edgar Allan Poe used to describe the surrounding made me create and feel the mood. Edgar chose this type of setting because of the plot of the poem. If he would have created it in a happy place, like a circus or a carnival, the effect that he might wanted to create with action wouldn't cause the same effect on the reader. The whole sense of being scary and mysterious would be completely different if Edgar Allan Poe had decided to use another type of setting. The types of description the author uses is also a fundamental aspect when creating the mood. In this poem Edgar uses a lot of uncommon words to give a mood of mystery to the
In Poe's "The Raven", he uses symbolism to really create the mood of the story. "This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining, On the cushion's velvet lining that the lamplight gloated o'er." (Raven 13). The lamplight represents happiness and joy, and the Raven acts as his memories of Lenore. The narrator cannot be happy because the raven is blocking the light from him, so the memories of Lenore are in the way of his
