Argumentative Essay In the novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the main character Jay Gatsby, was great. Gatsby was great due to his ambition, optimism, and for being passionate in the novel. The Great Gatsby was set in the 1920’s, based upon Jay Gatsby, in Nick Carraway’s perspective. Jay Gatsby had a very strong ambition for everything in his life. If he wanted it he’d strive to get it no matter how difficult. Gatsby’s ambition gave him everything he had when Nick met him in the beginning of the book. When Gatsby was younger he had nothing growing up. Gatsby was a young boy named James Gatz, living in North Dakota with his poor parents as farmers. Years later, after meeting Dan Cody, “Gatz” changed his named to Jay Gatsby and dropped out of college and began training to be in the military. During this time, Gatsby had met Daisy Buchanan and they had fallen in love. After the war, Gatsby was striving to become a wealthy and respected man. In the novel, Daisy married Tom while Gatsby was still in the war. Gatsby wrote to Daisy on her wedding day saying to wait for him, of course she ended up marrying Tom. Although, Gatsby was still optimistic about his relationship, or rather future relationship, with Daisy. Throwing all these parties was him trying to get Daisy to come and see him and how great he is doing with his new found wealth.
