THESIS: In Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" vivid imagery is utilized through ethos, logos, and pathos in an attemt to sway the acts of sinners to be morally correct."
Jonathan Edward, an American theolagian and central figure in the awakening during the 1800’s, was mostly known for leadning the great awakning and his strong belief in hell: a very common topic during his time. In his sermon “ sinners in the hands of an angry god,” preached on July 8, 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut. Edward emphasizes gods power and how easy it is for god to drop you in hell, so therfore you should do everyhting you can to get on his good side.
“Sinners in the hands of an angry god” is a sermon written by Jonathan Edwards, an American theolagian. The sermon was preached during the periode of great awakening when it was a time of religiouse revival. The Great Awakening was essentially a spiritual awakening of different religious groups in thethirteen colonies of America in the 18th century. While before the people were more static and somberin their approach to religion, when the Awakening began they started to be more emotional, so they could feel a greater connection to God. Using pathos connects with the reader or listener emotionally, sometimes making them feel that the speech is being directed to them personally. The use of ethos is critical because in order for edwards audience to take him seriously, they must respect him and agree that he is worth listening to. Finally, the use of logos in edwards preach is important because facts are needed in order to make a valid position and point. Opinion is great, but the readers and listeners need to know the facts in order to listen and agree to edward ethically and emotionally. Ethos, logos, and pathos in edwards sermon are all equally important and all work
