These facilities are usually targeting individuals who are of geriatric age or need around the clock care (mental health and physical health). The residents in these communities have access to individually-tailored levels of individual or group-centered activities, programs, and assistance whether it is with home or personal care. Long term care facilities are generally for those who are unable to manage independently in the community. Specific types of long-term services include nursing homes, hospice care, home health agencies, and residential care facilities. My desire to become an Army Chaplain is motivated by my call into the ministry, leadership experience, multiculturalism, education and exposure to pluralistic ministry with people of different traditions and perspectives. As a dynamic, enthusiastic pastor and a church leader, with a 12 year track record of transforming and revitalizing diverse congregations with a renewed desire for both growth and increase in faith focus; I am seeking this vast honor as a regular Army Chaplain because of the aforementioned reasons.

“The Palace” is located in the heart of the gables. It is one of the top notch awarded nursing home facilities for seniors stated by many families. Currently being an employee at this facility, I am learning the frightful stories of senior living. Even the Palace one of the most expensive, awarded senior living is actually a terrible place for the elderly. Especially, working at the Front Desk as the receptionist, I have seen firsthand how these poor seniors are forced into these haunted “luxurious” homes. The marble of the building has been often a misleading reason for placing their parent or grandparent in such terrible care. Most humans tend to judge by the appearance of the nursing homes rather than further investigating any violations that the facilities may have. From my own experience with my grandmother, I know it can be very difficult to take care of a senior citizen, especially when they suffer from various conditions and are just not safe in their home. Once adults become seniors, they require a lot of attention and assistance, which is hard when running a whole household and a career. But placing your loved one in one of these facilities can just shorten the amount of time they have to live. Also, it can be very expensive. Lastly, nursing home makes seniors feel the lack of freedom.

In my time volunteering at the hospital, I hope to gain many different experiences. However, there are a few main ones: adaptation through enrichment and dependability. First of all, I want to get to know and adapt to the environment of the hospital and learn how different processes work. This is a crucial part of being in the atmosphere of a clinic. Also, the experiences that I will have at the hospital will help me to understand the routines and entailments of the career I would like to pursue. I hope to become a Physician’s Assistant in the future and this will be the best way to know if it is the right position for me. This enrichment of my understanding will help guide my passion for this career path and hopefully strengthen it.

From the beginning of this year, and into the summer I worked as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) at an assisted living facility in Colorado. It was a great experience and it made me realize that helping people is something that I want to do no matter what. Working as a CNA has taught me so many things, but something that stands out to me is that I learned to have patience so that I could understand what someone is communicating, or trying to communicate.

He is now a Chaplain at Good Shepherd Hospice. He became a chaplain for Good Shepherd Hospice after attending a breakfast he was invited to by a fellow Chaplain John Holloway. The breakfast was used to recruit people to enter into the CPE (clinical Pastoral Education) and he chose to sign up for the class and was offered a position. Prior to becoming a Chaplain, he was working as pastor and meeting with people in his congregation, maybe one or two a month, who were dying so he felt like he was already being prepped for his current position. He is involved in many veteran’s programs, one being the Polk County Veterans Council, which meets monthly and anything that is happening with veteran’s affairs and events goes through that council. He is also chairman of the veteran’s recognition committee “We Honor Veterans” at Good Shepherd Hospice. This committee was started by the VA to help educate and provide services to veterans in the community primarily for hospice care. Only 30 percent of the veterans in the country actually utilize VA services so the VA wanted to get the community more involved in reaching out to the other 70 percent that are not connected. Therefore, “We honor Veterans” was created and a special training program was implemented for the organizations that wanted to be a part of it to provide them training in learning how to best care for the vets that were beginning to use hospice care services. Long-term care system America dates its generations from 1946 to 1964 which is a period after the Second World War. Children born in this era are known as baby boomers and constitute about 20% of the American population. In 2011, the youngest baby boomers turned 50 while the oldest have already retired. This is a massive retirement and has a lot of implications to the entire country. If projections are done to estimate the number of aged people in the American society by 2030 or 2050, it is undoubtedly that there will be millions of them.

The transition from living in their own homes, to living in a LTCF, can be a traumatic experience.
