An Analysis of Good Will Hunting, Directed by Gus Van Sant Director Gus Van Sant’s Academy-Award winning movie Good Will Hunting, is set in South Boston. The story is centered on a kid named Will Hunting, an undercover intellectual. He works as a janitor and does proofs no one else on the campus could do. Professor Lambeau finds out about this and seeks to help him use his talents. He gets him off of criminal charges in exchanged for seeing a counselor and working on math with him. When Will isn’t spending time cycling through counselors or doing math with Lambeau, he hangs out with Chuckie and his boys. Will has to over come lots of different obstacles to be with Skylar. The first obstacle he has to overcome is his background. Being a poor kid from South Boston he wouldn’t normally be on Skylar’s radar, but he impresses her by standing up for Chuckie in a bar: “You're an idiot. I've been sitting there all night waiting for you to come over to talk to me. But I'm tired now, and I have to go home, and couldn't just keep sitting there waiting.” The second obstacle Will has to overcome is he doesn’t know what true love is. Sean explains this to him a couple times throughout the movie, really opening up about his wife: “But you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes, feeling like God put an angel on earth just for you. Who could rescue you from the depths of hell. And you wouldn't know what it's like to be her angel, to have that love for her, be there forever, through anything, through cancer. And you wouldn't know about sleeping sitting up in the hospital room for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes, that the terms "visiting hours" don't apply to you.
