Teenage homicides have increased by one hundred and fifty percent, largely due to gang violence. Gang violence is increasing at a rapid pace in the United States. In today's larger cities, gang violence is a reality that people have to deal with every day. As gang related crimes increase, officials are trying to
find out why people join and remain loyal to gangs. Authorities have been trying to find a way to reduce gang related crime and violence. Federal authorities and local law enforcement also have combined resources to create task forces and other bodies to investigate and prosecute gang members.
Although authorities are looking to try and find a way to prevent gang violence it does not seem to be working. More gangs are being started whether in prison or out on the street. More kids are starting to join gangs as a way to have fun. Reasons kids may be in gangs range from it being that they are being forced, pressured into it, are joining to have fun, or they were born into the gang. School gang prevention programs are great and are influencing some kids to stay away from gangs, while others are deciding that gangs would be more fun than school. Gang violence is increasing extremely fast and there is something that needs to be done.

Most kids don’t like to just sit around in a classroom or auditorium learning about why it’s wrong to join gang. I would probably let them be able to move around, do activities watch a movie about inmates saying what gangs did to them whether it helped or not. Most importantly they should try and change the view some kid shave on gangs. While some kids may feel like gangs are dangerous and they should stay away, others feel like gangs are exhilarating and are somehow drawn to them. This is a main focus that I would try to pinpoint and something the people who teach about gangs should try to
In todays United States we have a huge problem affecting society, gangs and the violence that follows them wherever they go. These days’ gangs aren’t just compiled of grown adults, they often lure in young teens to do dirty work and to add numbers to their turf. Despite laws aimed straight at these gangs they still defy the law and wreak havoc upon the territory that they claim. The members in the gang have a gang first mentality and will do everything possible to provide for and protect their fellow members. They will very rarely snitch on their own to help put a stop to some of the meaningless crimes committed by these savages.
behind their classmates in school and do not try. A study shows that less than
In society today, there is a major problem We live in a society where gangs are taking over our neighborhoods in numbers. It is the responsibility of the individuals to part take in getting their neighborhoods back under control. Gangs are becoming a growing problem in American society. More young people are turning to gangs to solve problems in their lives or for acceptance. When youths join gangs, they drop all their social activities with school, family, and friends. However, individuals ruin their lives, and the chances of them having a decent education, and a successful life by getting involved in gang activity.
Gang involvement and its associated violent crime have become a rapidly growing problem for the United States. Generally, gangs consist of young people of the same ethnic, racial, and economic background. Usually of a low socio-economic status, these gangs engage in illegal money making activities and intimidate their neighborhoods and rival gangs with violent crimes and victimization. Gang members exemplify a high value for group loyalty and sacrifice.
A two-pronged prevention approach has proven effective, with primary prevention strategies aimed at the community 's general population and secondary prevention strategies targeting youth between the ages of 7 and 14 who are at high risk of joining gangs. Prevention efforts undertaken by law enforcement departments around the country include: “Participating in community awareness campaigns (e.g. developing public service announcements and poster campaigns). Contacting the parents of peripheral gang members (through the mail or during personal visits) to alert them that their children are involved with a gang. Sponsoring gang hotlines to gather information and facilitate a quick response to gang-related issues. Organizing athletic events with teams of law enforcement officers and gang members. Establishing working relationships with local social service agencies. Making presentations about gangs to schools and community groups as a combined effort at prevention and information gathering. Sponsoring school-based gang and drug prevention programs (e.g. DARE and GREAT)” (Hess, 2013 p.230).
Gang violence affects many people, but it targets certain ethnic groups. The majority of gangs nationwide have a percentage of 47% Hispanics and 31% African Americans. Moreover since 2009 the majority of gangs consist of males, and 37% of them are under the age of 18. Also it has been estimated that in Boston 66% of youth homicides can be connected with gang violence. Since the 1980s through 1990s youth violence increased tremendously. Many homicides were happening throughout this time, which connects back with the gang
For my final paper I am going to talk about a program that in my eyes is a great way for our youth to receive different views and healthy choices when it comes to avoiding and confronting gangs or gang members. Gang Resistance Education and Training, abbreviated G.R.E.A.T., and provides a school-based, police officer instructed program that includes classroom instruction and various learning activities. The mission of the program is to provide a range of activities to our kids to keep them away from gangs or related activity as well as educate them on competency, usefulness, and personal empowerment which will prevent them from
Chicago has the biggest gang problem in the country (Thomas & Bass, 2009). “There are more gang members per citizen in Chicago than anywhere else in the country” (Thomas, 2009, para 4). The average Chicago gang leader is 43, convicted of murder and lives in the suburbs. That leader on many occasions directs his gang from jail (Main, 2006) and 95 percent of inmates in the Cook County Jail are gang members (Thomas, 2009). Gangs are everywhere today just like they use to be. The high number of gangs causes violence and deaths to rise in Chicago.
Juvenile gangs have become a serious and growing problem in many areas throughout the U.S. It is unlikely that gang control strategies can be successful as long as legitimate economic alternatives are lacking. I will be exploring the possible proactive solutions to this social problem.
Gangs are becoming prevalent in today’s society and within our schools. More and more young people are turning to gangs in an attempt to escape their everyday lives and the future, which they perceive as dismal and bleak. They are initially attracted to the prestige and cash flow, which is glamorized by the street gang. Many gangs are actively involved in criminal misconduct, such as drug and gun trafficking, burglaries and homicides. However, street gangs are not just a criminal justice issue, but a social problem, which is triggered by poverty, peer pressure, boredom, despair and lacking a sense of belonging.
I have some similar concept with you about the gang problem. The Gang is a big issue affect the young generation in the society. This negative power of gang make people affair and have unsafe environment for living. Many young age kids have possible become gang member by learning form congener teens. I understand many parent worried their children get hurt form gangs or become a gang member bullying others. You give me good idea think about how should everyone treat the gang problem and notice parent should seriously look at the effect of gang and prevent their children to be one of them. The best way to protest children become gang member is teach them what should and shouldn’t do.
I enjoy reading your post. Street, prison, and motorcycle gang membership and criminal activity continues to flourish in US communities where gangs identify opportunities to control street level drug sales, and other profitable crimes. Gangs will not only continue to defend their territory from rival gangs, but will also increasingly seek to diversify both their membership and their criminal activities in recognition of potential financial gain. Our law enforcements have done a tremendous job combating gangs. Is there anything else that we can do stop gangs from expanding and committing more violence?
The problem of gangs persists and lives are still being lost today. Gangs are truly are an assault on whatever community they are in. They tear at the very fabric of family and community life. There have been many attempts to solve the problem of gangs, but most were not backed up by data or hard evidence and therefore they are difficult to assess. One factor as to why gangs cannot be stopped permanently
Gangs have direct effects on a society, such as increased levels of crime, violence and murder. Gangs also have long-term or late suggestions in that gang members are more likely to drop out of high school, struggle with unemployment, abuse drugs and alcohol or in end up in jail. These factors not only contribute to the gang members, but they also force taxpayers to pay for welfare and community-assistance programs. Common reasons for the younger generation to join gangs, include trying to find a place where they belong and sharing in mutual desires for safety from family problems or life challenges. Together, the feelings and attitudes among gang members haze them to act violently, often self-contradictory with rival gangs. This violence leads to injury and death of not only members but also of bystanders in the community. High gang activity also causes fear among community members, discourages business activity and obstructs home-value appreciation. Communities, also must pay for higher levels of law enforcement when gangs are prominent.
Therefore, it would be better to go to elementary schools to raise awareness through presentations and discussions rather than in middle or high schools. Additionally, determining who the individuals are that are at risk or highly likely to join a gang, could possibly change the outcome. If we could get those students into the right programs and give them the help they need early on, then we would not only change their life but also reduce youth involvement in organized crime. A study done by (author names) showed that both depression and suspension rates decreased at (school name) after the LAPD ran its program. These positive results should be encouraging for us and something that we need to strive for as a community. Understandably, resources can be an issue. Despite this, I think that if we even committed just a few officers to the cause we would see increasingly positive results because our community is not that large. Also, if teachers and school staff are willing to cooperate too, then we’ll see that it is an easily achievable goal. Certainly, it will take time and we might have to try out a few things before we find what exactly works, but in the end, it will be worth
