According to the Oxford English Dictionary many words and phrases we use today are at their root, offensive. For example cretin is used to mean an idiot but, in the Nineteenth century this word was used for those with severe congenital birth defects similar to cerebral palsy. This word came from the Swiss French meaning “Christian” to remind others that these unfortunates were still human beings. The phrase “no can do” is actually Pidgin English from Chinese immigrants meaning “I can’t do that”. Too much effort is made to not offend people and political correctness is out of control threatening to end our way of life. Phrases we use on a daily basis with no intent to harm anyone can be turned against us thus making speaking with each other …show more content…
What happens if the next killer wraps themselves in an American flag? Are we going to get rid of that flag too? I don’t care if the Confederate flag is taken down; that is up to the people of those states to decide what their state flag should represent about themselves. Symbols are often used outside of their original context. An excellent example is the Swatiska whose original idea was auspiciousness and “that which is associated with wellbeing. This symbol has been around for over a thousand years in the Hindu, Buddha and Jainism religions and is still used today in eastern parts of the world without any one trying to get rid of it. My biggest concern in this regard is once we start to remove symbols we start to rewrite history. There are already people calling for the removal of statues of Confederate leaders. Once that’s cleaned up who’s sacred cows are” next? I find this concept similar to Nazi Germany’s banning and burning of books which did not fit in with the propaganda of the time. All the better to guide the populace into politically correct thinking. In 2012 a pastor was disinvited to a national day of prayer because of his religious views and in 2012 a judge postponed proceedings for 9/11 plotters because of
On January 1992 the NAACP put in affect a boycott on South Carolina to pressure the state to remove the Confederate flag off of its Statehouse in Columbia. The boycott is what initially brought life to this issue. The NAACP’s removal request is based on the fact that they, the anti-flag groups, claim that the meaning of the Confederate flag is one of hate and discrimination. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently whom are called the pro-flag groups. They claim that the Confederate flag is a sign of heritage and should stay on South Carolina’s Statehouse. Anti-flag articles are more likely to be found published in well-known Liberal magazines, when credible pro-flag articles were hard
Thesis Statement: Three reasons why Confederate monuments or flags should be removed are they lie to themselves (white supremacists) by honoring the hero, even though they know they did wrong, The Nazi flag and the Confederate battle flag were designed by groups that rejected the founding American creed of the Declaration of Independence, that “all men are created equal, and It was a flag flown by a few regiments in the Civil War but widely popularized later by the Ku Klux Klan.
The Confederate flag has now become a hot issue for South Carolina, which is the last state to have the original Confederate flag still flying on its Statehouse. What got the State’s attention was the economic boycott of South Carolina that was announced on January 1992 by the NAACP to pressure the State to remove the Confederate flag off of its Statehouse in Columbia. The NAACP’s removal request is based on the fact that they, the anti-flag groups, claim that the meaning of the Confederate flag is one of hate and discrimination. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently whom are called the pro-flag groups. They claim that the Confederate flag is a sign of heritage
The start of the Confederate flag controversy was due to the request of the NAACP to remove the flag off of South Carolina’s Statehouse. This request is based on the fact that they, the anti-flag groups, claim that the meaning of the Confederate flag is one of hate and discrimination. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently whom are called the pro-flag groups. They claim that the flag is a sign of heritage and should stay on the Statehouse. Liberals tend to be in the favor of the anti-flag groups, and conservatives are more likely to be supporting pro-flag groups. Both sides use evidential logos to prove their arguments, and pathos to show how wrong the other side is.
The Confederate Battle flag is one of the most recognized symbols in the United States. It is not always a welcome symbol in today’s society. Take for instance the state of South Carolina having to remove it from its statehouse on April 12, 2000. The reason it is not always welcome is because people often misinterpret its true meaning. It is not a symbol of hatred but, a symbol of southern pride and honor. The pride and honor of all the men and women who carried it the flag into battle fighting for what they believed in, Southern independence.
My closing thoughts on the Confederate Flag. I feel that the future of this debate, if there is one, depends highly upon how well we understand history. When I look at history and the intricate relationships that formed the Confederate flag and what it represented at that time, I cannot help but to synthesize a conclusion that symbolism is both a powerful yet potentially dangerous motivator, in this case good or bad, you decide. The simple thought of symbolism and its implications from a bygone era contemporaneous with the emergence of divergence among millions of Americans is as powerful today as it was when slavery began. This is another area where even I have to admit, I did not know the full truth, and slavery came about long before racism.
Do you want America to be a label of controversy and disagreement?Do you want pride and patriotism to just be a thing of the past? The Confederate Flag is one of the most controversial icons of American cultures, making it the reason of many disagreements in the country’s idea of right. Therefore it should be removed from public places because it has represented the melancholy history of war and slavery,a topic that should not regain power, however respect the individuals that keep it inside their property, leaving the decision to everyone that has different judgements.
The Confederate flag has been a topic of controversy in the United States for many years. It and other symbols of the Confederacy are parts of many state flags in the South and it is even flown at several state buildings throughout the South. To some the Confederate flag is a historical symbol and is believed to be a way of remembering the Civil War that almost tore the nation in two, but to others it represents fear and hatred due to its use by racial hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and it symbolizes the slave-holding South that existed prior to the Civil War. Such a controversial symbol should not be flown on state grounds, but also should not be forgotten. State lawmakers should remove the Confederate flag from state buildings and instead erect memorials remembering the Civil War that are jointly Union and Confederate, or museums remembering the war and honoring the thousands of soldiers that died during America’s bloodiest war.
Although the confederate flag was not originally created to be a hate symbol, it became one over the years. If there is any symbol or material item that offends a certain ethnic group, it can, and will most likely, be labeled as a racist insignia. When something goes as far as offending and restricting the rights of men and their equality, then it is racist and should not be tolerated to fly above a man’s home or dwelling. If an item such as the confederate flag plays such a significant role in history, it should be remembered in a museum. By putting it into a museum, it will be respected, not forgotten, and the people whose lives had been affected by the Confederate Flag are not in any situations where they feel scared, at risk of harm, inadequate or unequal; the people shall not be persecuted or feel as though they are being persecuted. The Confederate Flag should not fly amongst the people any longer. The past is the past.
The Confederate flag has a huge and long history representing heritage and beliefs of the south. Today there has been a big debate whether this flag should be taken down or to let it fly. It has been told this flag represents slavery and racism amongst African Americans. Racism has rose to a new height since the civil rights movement and social media spreads it faster across the world. Although this flag represents merely heritage and sacrifice by many Americans even African Americans. The flag was to be created for a national flag during the civil war but was turned down. This flag is nothing but a symbol of heritage and pride like the national flag today.
The problem we are facing today is whether or not the confederate flag is a symbol of hate and racism of just some peoples misunderstanding of the meaning of the flag it’s self. I think meaning of the flag is simple and straightforward ,it represents the Confederate side in the civil war. I do not think the confederate flag should be banned on private or public property for a few reasons .One reason is that the civil war a huge mark on our history that needs to be remembered. Another reason would be that the civil war was not about slavery. The man that Started this big debate Dylann Roof was completely crazy.
The confederate flag shouldn’t be taken down, but, if taken down shouldn’t be forgotten in the South.First of all, the confederate flag represents the history of South Carolina and the past and present . Second of all, even if the flag is taken down, the flag should be placed in a museum and the people of South Carolina should vote.Lastly, some people see the confederate flag has a racist flag, but, on the other side people think it represents the civil war and the people that died during that time. Some people believe, that the confederate flag represents racism, however, you could say that the flag represents the civil war and the people that died during that time.
Now many who oppose this will say that this isn’t true due to groups like Neo-Nazis and the K.K.K going out of the way to stop the removal of these monuments, but supporters feel that small groups not directly associated with the confederacy should not be a just cause for removal, because to many it is misrepresentation. The K.K.K might be the hardest to argue on this idea, but their clan was made after the Civil War, on behalf of the Confederacy, not part of it. Therefore, the Confederacy and its symbols should not be held accountable for what groups after it take action
The confederacy is dead. The Civil War is long over, and the United States has experienced much growth and development since its end, much of this due to the outcome of the war. A new, united America flourished throughout the late eighteen hundreds gaining a great deal of power through high levels of commerce and trade. There is no doubt that America is better off now because of the outcome of the War between the States. However, many of the symbols of the Civil War remain very active in the present world; they are very much alive and charged with meaning and power. Probably the best known among all of these symbols is the Confederate Battle Flag. The “rebel flag” has taken on
There are serious unforeseen consequences for taking down confederate monuments. The Confederate monuments represent a form of history whether it is favored or not. There will always be a legacy of racial tension and inequality in our nation (newsweek”). However that does not mean we should let the idea of confederacy stop us from succeeding and moving forward in life. If we target Confederate monuments to take down, this would lead to African American monuments targeted also such as the MLK memorials and the Arthur Ashe statue. Not only would we be left with damaged statues, we will
