Introduction The presentation of both A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman unearths certain striking similarities and noticeable differences. While the similarities and differences are wide ranging, the scope of this paper only allows limited coverage that focusses on the treatment of the woman and narration. Notably, the similarities and differences help to highlight the plight of women in increasingly patriarchal communities. Similarities between the texts The question of gender domination comes to the fore when the two texts are considered. Suffice to say that both A Rose for Emily and The Yellow Wallpaper were written at the turn of last century when male domination was rampant and prevalent. Emily, the protagonist in A Rose for Emily lives under strict control and domination of her father. The first and perhaps the most enduring image of dominance and control is depicted where Emily is seen in the background while her father stands “in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip” (Faulkner, 2012). In both texts, poor mental health is caused by isolation and violence female protagonists. The death of Emily’s father in A Rose for Emily, drives her to depression. Her poor mental state comes to the fore when she poisons her errant husband Homer. In The Yellow Wallpaper, John isolates and neglects his wife at their house as he is working “all day, and even some nights” (Gilman, 2016), which leads to feelings of loneliness that later develop to depression.
