Driverless Car Safety

As technology in automobiles continues to improve, the debate over driverless cars has become more frequent. A self-driving car is able to move and navigate on its own using sensors and programming technology without human control. Many people believe the development of driverless cars would be beneficial because they could reduce the risk of hitting another car. The sensors and navigation would be able to avoid accidents, while drivers usually get distracted and would be able to use their time leisurely in the car. A self-driving car may allow people to drive when unable to in the past, such as children and disabled persons, and can be more cost-effective due to cheaper insurance. However, self-driving cars could be extremely expensive and can easily malfunction and therefore not always reliable, while also decreasing the safety of pedestrians and children who may attempt to use the car without permission. With new technology and distractions, driver’s minds can easily wander and become preoccupied. Technology can easily malfunction, and something as small as my phone or a light bulb will glitch frequently. I often see cars stranded on the side of the road because the engine went out or broke down; imagine how catastrophic an accident could be if a sensor in the car went out. Nobody thought it was possible to create a more reliable, affordable car but he knew he could, and he did it. Throughout the years we have been able to create newer technology for our cars making them safer, faster, and more affordable. Our technology has grown so much, that we have been able to create driverless cars. These cars are able to sense their surroundings around them, and drive without human association. But this raises a question for many, can a computer system replace a human at the wheel?

I do believe Americans are ready for cars that can drive themselves?, and it be safe for “ai’s” on the road instead of normal human drivers?, and this will be beneficial to traffic, crashes, and time? With General Motors vehicle-to-vehicle, or V2V, communications technology in some of its upcoming Cadillac models, it will definitely reduce the many crashes we have each year, because of it's ability to brake and avoid hitting other cars. In her article “To Hit the Road, Driverless Cars Must Be Safe, Not Perfect,” Nidhi Kalra argues that because humans are untrustworthy when it comes to safe driving, we should adapt to driverless cars. She provides three premises to support her argument. First, she presents the data of deaths and injuries that were caused by human mistakes. Second, she points out that even though driverless cars may never reach perfection, they would never make miscalculations or mistakes that human drivers make all the time, such as drunk driving, drowsy driving, or driving with distraction. Third, she argues that driverless cars offer benefits such as bettering mobility and efficiency, reducing congestion costs and land use. With these primary premises, Kalra persuades that driverless cars should hit the road one day to reduce amounts of accidents that are likely made by human drivers.

Think about getting into your car to go on vacation. You have everything pacted, hop in, and get ready to watch a movie. This is starting to become a reality in the coming years. More and more industries are starting to dump millions of dollars into invoicing a safe, self driving vehicle. However, is this really a positive step with the innovation of transportation.Transportation with technology is evolving with us everyday. Self Driving cars are one of the new forms of technology. Driverless cars are beginning to enter the roadway currently. National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Joan Claybrook, believes that it will take between 10-30 years before driverless cars are good enough to be fully administered on the roadway (Greenhouse).

I think self driving cars are not safe because the GPS is pre-programed which is bad because if the road changes in any way the GPS will not find a detour it will probably crash.

This essay is about driverless cars and how they can be dangerous and harmful it’s probably not a good idea to get one. The cars are a bad idea to invent. They can cause problems and they can cost a lot. Driverless car can cause a horrible accident or they can get out of control. They can break down if there something wrong with the technology and the car can get you lost when driving.

Most people thinks that driverless cars will be much safer and more efficient. A million fewer road deaths a year is just the beginning (Laird).Each year 30,000 people die in traffic collisions in the U.S. considering that 90% of U.S. auto collisions are blamed from human error- Some 40% are the result of factors such as alchohol or fatigue- we have a lot to gain by outsourcing the task of driving to computers(Griffith). Even if 10% of vehicles are autonoumous, traffic will improve drastically (Brown). If 10% of vehicles were self-driving, it could reduce the number of accidents by 211,000 and in turn save 1,100 lives, according to a 2013 study by the eno center for transportation in Washington, D.C. (Griffith). If 90% of vehicles were autonoumous, an estimated 4.2 million accidents would be prevented and 21,700 lives would be saved (griffith) . 5 main advantages of driverless cars are 1. Less or no more accidents. 2. Elderley and disabled people are able to drive wherever they want to. 3. No more boring drivving on highways (and no more tickets for speed excess…). 4. Stop looking for parking spots.

Many people agree that driverless cars aren’t safe. I also don’t agree that these cars are safe. The reason for that are going to be explained in the following paragraphs.

In the year 2013, 3,154 people were killed due to distracted driver related crashes. Motor vehicle accidents are the number two leading cause of preventable deaths. Once driverless cars are put onto the streets, these numbers would decrease drastically. Imagine losing your loved one due to a teenager that was drunk or texting while driving. Self-driving cars cannot drink behind the wheel nor take a text back their best friend. Not only does accident collisions happen due to distracted driving but also angry drivers. Some drivers can be very aggressive on the road. With the addition of driverless cars, road rage drivers can be eliminated from society. Speeding drivers are also a very high cause of accidents and innocent pedestrians being hit. Driverless cars are equipped to follow the rules of the road and keep the streets safe

Our future is intense and frightening, but overall, unpredictable. We will have driverless cars soon in our world. They will overtake our roads and means of transportation. In my opinion, I think there is both good and bad with these driverless cars. There is both pros and cons dealing with this future. This future for cars will reduce drunk driving, reduce traffic jams, and reduce expense on the driver and our planet. The downside however, will come with putting millions out of business. Driverless cars are technology, and technology is not perfect, it sometimes crashes and does not always work the way we want it to. We do know that humanity is not perfect either. Humanity makes mistakes just as much as technology. So in this essay, I will talk about perspective one, perspective two, and perspective three, all talking about how driverless cars are good and bad for the future of our world.

The human race advances every day with new technologies and scientific advances. As of late, the hot topic in technological advances are driverless cars.The building and testing of cars that require no driver began about ten years ago and has been adopted by many companies along the way. Due to these cars not using a human driver, they must use a combination of sensors, GPS, and video cameras to make sure it is as safe as possible. However, there are still dangers as a machine cannot react quite like humans can and cannot predict what a human will do when driving. The technology has been put in our society via human test subjects riding with the car.

Transportation started off with the appearance of the wheel more than 3,000 years ago . The development of the industrial steam engine during the industrial revolution was a show stopper. Mankind has been behind the wheel ever since. In 1903, the first road trip was completed by H. Nelson Jackson and Sewall K. Crocker.They rumbled across the west of the United States until finally reaching New York. These man traveled more than 36 hours ,and consequently, spent about 8, 000 dollars in repairs, food, and hotels along the way. Both men inspired millions with their journey. As time went by,citizens learned to be responsible while driving. Enough people have no problem driving; nevertheless, leaving a unreliable “assistant” in charge of the lives of loved ones. All states should prohibit driverless cars due to their extravagant cost, total unreliability, and the future changes to laws that will potentially press more stress down on drivers.

People may enjoy the idea of the future having driverless vehicles, but they don’t take the time to look at the other side where things can occur with driverless vehicles. First, let’s talk about the software issue because it’s 2017 we are surrounded by technology that can be used against us. Just as Andy, Charlie, and Chris realized that they can easily hack a Jeep, anyone can hack a driverless vehicle, especially experience hackers.“The Guardians” pointed out in their article, that hackers could hack into any vehicles they wish and can infect the vehicle with a virus just like a computer and can spread the viruses to every vehicle, especially if the software is poorly protected. “The Guardians” also mentioned how there are 5 types of hackers, 1) White Hackers who just hack into weak easy software, 2) Activist Hackers who hack with a purpose or motive, 3) Nation hackers who are the agencies who hack different nations, 4) Hackers of threats like Isis and 5) Criminals who hack to rob millions of dollars. People are also concerned about how the software can take the opportunity to collect personal data, which several people don’t feel comfortable with.
