Dreams are stories our mind creates while we are asleep. Dreams can be witty, cheerful, passionate, disturbing, horrific, and downright confusing. All my life I have always wondered what goes on in our brains when we dream. I also have wondered why our brains create dreams. Are dreams something the brain creates to make sense of what it views so it organizes images into coherent stories. Dream content also varies depending on life experience. A child will dream of candy and toys but an adult will dream of love and their future. Tracing dreams back to the beginning of time people have always tried to interpret dreams and understand their meaning. Scientist today discover more and more about dreams and why we have them, someday we will understand why we have them. A dream Is a series of thoughts, images, and sensations that occur in a person's mind during sleep. The scientific study of dreams is called Oneirology. Dreams can be caused by many things but what scientist today believe, is that dreams occur due to chemicals being released in the body while you’re sleeping. When you fall asleep the neurotransmitter in your brain releases gamma-aminobutyric acid. Gamma-aminobutyric acid is released to dampen nerve activity in the brain which leads to the feeling of calm and relaxation. Gamma-aminobutyric acid is also prescribed to people who suffer from ADHD. Another chemical that is released in your body's melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone made by your body's pineal gland. The pineal gland is located in the middle of the brain. This chemical stays in the body for around 12 hours or all through the night. Melatonin increases the number of dreams a person remembers by prolonging the amount of time spent in REM sleep. This chemical also increases the chances of a person experiencing a lucid dream. A lucid dream is being more self-aware in a dream and being able to control that dream.
