Dr Pepper is one of the oldest soft drinks in the world. It is made from 23 different flavors. From its invention and naming to its problem with distribution, Dr Pepper has become part of the American culture.
In 1885, at a drug store in Waco, Texas, Charles Alderton, a pharmacist, invented Dr Pepper. At the time, most drinks were standard fruit flavors. “Alderton mixed and matched flavorings until he had created a unique drink that customers loved” (Ward, 2015, para. 2). He did not give it a name.
By now the customers had created a name, and the regulars called it “a Waco” (Ward, 2015, para 3), but that name would not stick. According to Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPSG), Dr Pepper may have been named by the owner of the drug store for someone he knew (Our History, 2015). He may have named it for a

There are also diet, 10 calorie, cherry, and real sugar formulas. The drink that started in a drug store in Waco is now all over the US and part of the world. Schulz shows that Dr Pepper’s share of the soda ranks it 5th with 6.8 CSD shares (2015). Not bad for a drink that started with no name. References

Dr Pepper has come a long way from Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas back in 1885. According to the Dr Pepper Museum website, under “History of Dr Pepper”, the inventor was Charles Alderton, who was a young pharmacist working in the drug store. In his spare time, he had a hobby of mixing carbonated beverages for customers. Apparently, he
Dr Pepper has been around for years. Nowadays this beverage might be your favorite soft drink but it wasn’t always so popular. It had to endure many hardships on its journey to where it is today. There was also a lot of luck and dedication involved. You might not even know where the beverage even comes from. Well I think it's about time you found out.
Dr. Pepper began to fall behind and lose market shares. In response Cadbury Schweppes reacted and created “Red Fusion”. Shocked by the news, Cadbury in 2004 contacted a man named Howard Moskowitz. Moskowitz, who earned a Ph.D in experimental psychology from Harvard and also has a consulting firm in the White Plains. He is a man who has optimized countless foods. Optimization is the the attempt make every part of the food extraordinary. People are paid to feel, touch, sip, smell, swirl, and taste the
5. “Its most rabid devotees proudly call themselves Peppers, belong to a club called the 10-2-4—so named for one of the early advertising campaigns, which encouraged people to drink three Dr Peppers a day, at ten, two, and four o’clock—and make pilgrimages to Waco, Texas, where a pharmacist at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store invented the drink in 1885” (48).
According to its official website, Dr Pepper original and most well-known product is Dr Pepper with 10 flavors. The company also unveiled Diet Dr Pepper with several flavors with the aim of satisfying customers who seek out a sugar-free soft drink. Another well-known product is 7 Up, a lemon-lime flavored and non-caffeinated soft drink.
He first tells us a story about how Dr Pepper was saved by Howard Moskowitz. In the early 2000s, Dr Pepper was looking to expand its market share. Moskowitz helped Dr Pepper by inventing Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper. Moss describes in detail how Moskowitz found the perfect formula for the new soft drink. Moskowitz made millions of iterations of the Dr Pepper formula with the Cherry and Vanilla formulas added. The variables altered were the amount of formula used, the color of the packaging, the color and feel of the liquid, and the test group’s sex, location and race. The results were entered into Moskowitz’s computer, and a process called “conjoint analysis” was used to determine the most attractive features (479). Moss met with Moskowitz in 2010, and learned about Moskowitz’s past in the army. He was trying to find out how to get troops to eat a consistent amount of food. They liked a fancy dish, but eventually grew tired of. He gave them bread and they ate tons of it, but they complained it wasn’t filling them up. It was here Moskowitz’s discovered “sensory-specific satiety”, a contradiction where the brain makes you feel full after experiencing heavily spiced foods. Moss states that companies like Frito Lay take this into account when designing their flavors; make them flavorful but just enough so that the brain keeps craving
The original source of all carbonated drinks was Joseph Priestley. Aside from being an English clergyman and scientist, his curiosity sparked from the gas that bubbled from fermentation vats. Using this interest in gas, he created sparkling water in 1772. Basing his knowledge off of Priestley’s work, John Pemberton created a syrup that was originally made for medical purposes. He used this syrup and sparkling water to create the tasty drink known as “Coca-Cola”.
The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is a great place for business. It is home to multiple companies and their corporate headquarters – and with an international airport, open trade routes, multiple universities and academic institutions – it proves to be the perfect location for businesses and professionals alike. One such company that is headquartered in Plano, TX, and is an example of a thriving organization in the area, is the Dr Pepper Snapple Group. A mostly domestic company, with most of its business located in North American and Mexico, the DPS Group is a manufacturer of nonalcoholic beverages in the beverage industry and is third in overall market share (after Coca-Cola and Pepsico). The beverage industry is steady and growing, but the nonalcoholic beverage portion of the industry is facing many challenges with carbonated soft drinks declining in sales due to a more health-conscious population. Analyzing the DPS Group and how they are dealing with these challenges was very interesting, as I have always been a Dr Pepper fan and would hate to see them go out of business or die out in the market. I have known people who have worked for the company and loved it, and I hope to work for them someday as well. I collected my research on the company through their website, articles and journals, and my own knowledge of the company and research into the company history through a visit to the Dr Pepper museum.
The soft drink industry in the United States is a highly profitably, but competitive market. In 2000 alone, consumers on average drank 53 gallons of soft drinks per person a year. There are three major companies that hold the majority of sales in the carbonated soft drink industry in the United States. They are the Coca Cola Company with 44.1% market share, followed by The Pepsi-Cola Company with 31.4% market share, and Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. with 14.7% market share. Each company respectively has numerous brands that it sales. These top brands account for almost 73% of soft drink sales in the United States. Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. owns two of the top ten
For a long time Dr. Pepper has been one of my favorite soft drinks, so when a friend told me about the new Limited Edition Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper I knew I had to try it. However, finding it in a store was more complicated than I had originally assumed it would be. Finally my husband was able to find it in a 2 liter bottle and brought it home for me to try. As soon as the lid was unscrewed the smell of chocolate was apparent. In fact the only thing I could smell was chocolate. The smell was so strong that I found it overwhelming. Upon pouring the Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper into a glass I found the drink to be a very dark hue of red indicating the use of cherry flavoring. The bubbles were a nice shade of red which gave the drink and interesting two-tone effect as it was being poured. The first drink of Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper was nothing like I expected. I expected to taste more cherry than chocolate but in fact it was the opposite. The chocolate taste was so prevalent that it was difficult to notice any other flavors. The chocolate taste was reminiscent of chocolate syrup and had a very bitter aftertaste. To be honest I didn 't really detect any cherry in the taste though there were hints of Dr. Pepper 's spicy taste in the background of the drink. This attempt at a new flavor from Dr. Pepper was not as good as I had hoped it would be. I would have thought combining three of my favorite things; chocolate, cherries, and Dr. Pepper would have made
In the ever changing world of customer needs and expectations Dr Pepper-Snapple was faced with an increased customer focus on energy drinks. This area, when exploited correctly, is a high growth and high margin beverage business. In early September 2007, Andrew Baker had his marching orders. He emerged out a long discussion about entering the energy drink business and off he went.
