The issue I choose deals with professional athletes and the criminal justice system. Over the years around the sport world there has been many cases of top professional athletes that have committed or accused of crimes. Over half of results of those crimes sadly ended their career. My favorite football player, former Dallas Cowboy star running back Ezekiel Elliott was accused of domestic violence which almost stopped him from playing his rookie season. All over the league it seems that professional athletes are more and more accused of domestic violence, but almost half of the cases the victim wasn't convinced and were proven innocent. That's not the worse part even though the victims were proven innocent half of those cases resulted in the …show more content…
The roles of race and crime played a major part in his conviction which lead to the end of his career. The star quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons career came to an end in the year 2007 for his involvement in an illegal dogfighting ring. Vick was convicted of a federal felony which lead him 19 months in prison. In result Vick was released from the team and the removal of his endorsements and was highly criticized by the public. Many felt as if his punishment was too hard. However the star quarterback was reinstated. He was also given another chance to play the sport again. Even though he was given another opportunity to play in the league again the process wasn't easy. Vick was allowed to return only if he showed genuine remorse an act of public …show more content…
That is why I believe to fix this problem the criminal justice system has to go through the prosecution with athletes step by step and maybe their trait should be longer because when it comes to professional athletes a lot of thing can play a part. I also feel that they should check medical records and their health issues because those things can play a major role in an athletes
Would you want your whole career ruined due to a mistake? Professional athletes more than likely label as the “Golden Children” and are expected to never do anything wrong. These athletes are the one’s little kids and young athletes look up to and aspire to be. One mistake and this can all go away. Everyone makes mistakes, but professional athletes take the fall harder due to their fame and fortune. Although professional athletes are in the public eye, their career should not be ruined due to crimes people commit every day because, underneath all the fame and fortune, they are just regular people.
One question raised when analyzing reasons for the rising number of crimes being committed by athletes
Many people believe that professional athletes are “above the law”. In reality, they are human beings like you and me who, no matter what the circumstances, can and will be charged like an average person. The offense of the crime can certainly come into play on whether or not a professional athlete who commits a crime should be allowed to play again.
Domestic violence in sports is threatening to affect the integrity of the sporting world in many different dimensions. True sportsmanship is rare to find in the sporting arenas in the US. Domestic violence is one of the most common crimes committed among male athletes. The statement is worrying considering that the violent crime rate in America has been steadily reducing. The issue is indeed a highly divisive one considering that the opinions are many and varied. One of the arguments is that the sportsmen should be viewed solely for their actions on the ground. Domestic issues should not be an issue for these people. However, there needs to be a careful consideration that players are human beings and with that comes the mandate to take care
This paper will discuss the NFL Concussion Scandal and analysis of the ethical issues regarding the scandal. American football has always been defined as a contact sport. Individuals know before playing the sport that they take on the risk of physical harm to their bodies. However, concussions and other repetitive head-blows could end in death and permanent damage. Also, American football has been shown to be the cause of chronic traumatic encephalopathy(CTE), which can lead to suicidal thoughts, memory loss, and dementia. With players undergoing a lot of physical harm without the proper care, many may see the NFL as an unethical business.
Professional sports have been in the news for domestic violence for a really long time. Some that may come to your mind could be Ray Rice, Warren Moon, Greg Hardy, and Jose Reyes. Yes, three of these four players are in the National Football League (NFL), but that does not mean that only football players are the ones who have been doing this. The most recent one is Jose Reyes who plays in Major League Baseball (MLB). That is really ones opinion, but some don’t have anything but I slap on the wrist. Commissioners around these leagues usually suspend the player for a couple games until all of the details and videos come out. Ray Rice was suspended two games until they saw evidence then he was suspended for the whole year. Some wanted him banned
Domestic abuse in the United States is a large-scale and complex social and health problem. The home is the most violent setting in America today (Lay, 1994). Sadly enough, the majority of people who are murdered are not likely killed by a stranger during a hold-up or similar crime but are killed by someone they know. Not surprisingly, the Center for Disease Control and prevention has identified interpersonal violence as a major public health problem (Velson-Friedrich, 1994). Current estimates suggest that three to four million women are the victims of physical abuse by their intimate partners (Harris & Cook, 1994). According to the FBI, some form of domestic violence occurs in half of the homes in the United States at least once a
The court system may have allowed many of these players to walk away from very serious crimes with inadequate punishment while the NFL’s response did little to discourage criminal behavior. Because of this, the first part of the solution lies with the judicial system to begin holding players accountable to the same standards as the average American citizen. Michael Vick served just a year and a half behind bars in a state that routinely sentences individuals to five-year terms for the same crime (Humane Society). In the case of O.J. Simpson, a jury of his peers allowed him to walk out of a courtroom a free man despite compelling

Long time NFL star running back gets caught on camera beating his wife in a elevator due to aggression and possible long term injuries. One of the biggest things that has changed over the years is the injuries and how long term injuries can affect a player. It is crazy when you research NFL players how much crime or bad things happen to them after they have played in the NFL for a while. Also the helmets in the NFL have changed a lot by just starting out as a leather cap then to a plastic helmet with a lot of cushioning and protection. To me the NFL has changed drastically with the helmet upgrade, the injuries, and the violence that comes from the long term injuries.
Personal conduct in the NFL, National Football League, is an issue that is starting to spiral out of control. Late September, 2014, “the league [had] suspended at least 20 players for actions including assault, substance abuse and use of performance-enhancing drugs” (White); this was only a few weeks into the regular season of play for the league. The NFL has grown enormously since it was founded on August 20, 1920 in Canton, Ohio. But, this league has become more and more lenient with its players and personnel. Many professional athletes in the NFL receive special treatment regardless of their improper actions, thus allowing them to elude the consequences and in turn setting a misleading example for their young fans. In order
Michael Vick, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, was convicted of operating a massive dog fighting ring and was sentenced to 23 months in jail in 2007.
There are many dilemmas that plague sports. Some of those can range from bribing, cheating, racism, and sports safety. In the past the NBA had to deal with the betting scandal involving Tim Donaghy and baseball has had to deal with the issue of performance enhancers. The sports industry generates around half a trillion dollars a year and it has to deal with multiple dilemmas at the youth, college, and professional level. A growing issue with sports has been the number of injuries that athletes have had to deal with. Typical sports injuries range from twisting ankles, blowing out knees, and dislocating shoulders. Surgery and rehabilitation have helped athletes to recover and get them back on the playing field faster
In beginning my revision process, I started by staring at my submitted essay over and over. First thought, I should have changed the title to something along the lines of, “Domestic Violence, is there Treatment?” Second thought, Wow!! What a difference I am from the person who first began this course. I took a look back over my previous submitted writing assignments and could see my writing abilities has drastically improved, As I reviewed and reflected on the submitted essay “Domestic Violence and Treatment”, I believe, I did a complete and thorough job in delivering my subject. As I previously stated, I credit you, Mr. Perkins and this course for my improvements. I have always struggled to put my thoughts on paper in a manner that is coherent. I now feel that my ability to write and express my ideas, thoughts and knowledge have grown stronger.
There are many different types of domestic violence. Physical abuse is the most obvious form, but this is not to say that outsiders always recognize it. Generally, physical violence causes bodily harm, using a variety of methods. Slapping, pushing, throwing, hitting, punching, and strangling are only a few methods. An object or weapon may or may not be used. There is not always physical evidence of physical abuse such as bruising, bleeding, scratches, bumps, etc., therefore, absence of physical marks does not necessarily mean physical abuse had not occurred. Physical abuse sometimes escalates to murder (Morris and Biehl 7, Haley 14-17).
