Throughout time people have integrated pets into their families and have viewed them as valued members of their families. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals, more commonly known through its acronym the ASPCA, “approximately 44% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 35% have a cat”("Pet Statistics."). Despite these animals having a home, many face neglect and abuse. The Humane Society released an advertisement successfully addressing the correlation between households with domestic violence and animal abuse present. The advertisement by the Humane Society effectively does this through the melancholic imagery and deep-seated message it conveys. The effectiveness of their advertisement can be discerned by analyzing its ethical, emotional, and rational appeal.
To start off, the Humane Society is the United States largest organization for the protection of animals. The organization is well known throughout the United States and internationally recognized. At the bottom of the advertisement, the organization's logo is included along with the address of their headquarters. The advertisement also includes the organization's website as well as the encouragement to contact them if they would potentially wish to gather further information which was done so in order to further elaborate and validate their claims on the advertisement Also, to further add to their credibility, that advertisement includes support from the National
In the United States today studies show that “1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men are sexually abused before the age of 18” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006). Therefore that would mean 42 million adults are survivors of child abuse right here in the United States. Among these children there are 73% of children who do not tell anyone for a year, and many who never tell anyone (The Children’s Assessment Center). If we do not intervene many would say 500,000 babies will be born and sexually abused by the age of 18. It is important is it to be educated in the signs and symptoms of adult and child sexual abuse and getting involved in our own communities to stop this vicious cycle. You may or may not be a social worker or therapist but everyone can help an adult or child just by caring enough to stop and recognize the clues (The Children’s Assessment Center).
This short yet powerful commercial video is released by ASPCA in 2007 to raise the awareness of animal abuse in the US. The commercial starts with a series of small clips of wounded and dirty animals in cages and boxes, some with visible scars in their eyes. While these clips are played, Sara McLachlan’s song “Arms of an Angel” is playing solemnly in the background. The commercial is aimed to persuade its audience to join and make donations to ASPCA for saving animals that are abandoned and abused by humans.
ASPCA uses fear to get to people's emotions to make them want to adopt a dog or a puppy. Also the ASPCA makes people want to help the dogs or puppies that could possible be put down. Another thing is people like to save animals for a living. In the ASPCA commercial, featuring Sarah McLachlan she uses fear to appeal to people’s emotions to make them feel bad about the poor and upsetting puppies in the ASPCA.
Every single day thousands of helpless animals are abused or killed, but is every one aware this goes on or that they can help stop this from happening? To try and put an end to animal cruelty, The ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit organization, made a television commercial that broke everyone’s hearts. During this commercial it shows many picture and clips of weak and abused animals. Throughout, the commercial a very somber song is playing In the Arms of an Angel, sung by Sarah McLachlan. Before the commercial ends with one last video of a sad dog staring at you, McLachlan asks for donations to help improve the lifes of these animals. This commercial creates a guilty and sad feeling for the audience by using many techniques to make the audience feel compassion and want to donate to help out the animals in need of help.
Throughout our lives we have most likely witnessed hundreds of commercials that try to persuade us to donate money. A great amount of advertisements exist to persuade their audiences to donate to a specific organization our cause. The ASPCA is an organization that works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws, and share resources with shelters nationwide. The ASPCA has many different campaign commercials that all have a singular purpose. The ASPCA announcement featuring Sarah Mclachlan that vividly portrays images of many different animals, is probably the most well known of all of the ASPCA commercials.
Envision the average American household having a lovely time watching advertisements on the television when suddenly a commercial about animal abuse plays and they hear “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan. It’s the famous commercial that tugged at everyone’s heartstrings back in 2007 (http://www.redbookmag.com/life/pets/news/a41805/sarah-mclachlan-aspca-commercial/), but the reason for its popularity can be described with the elements of an argument. Indeed, an argument is being made with those sad puppy eyes, and it is one that’s being made to appeal the crying audience. The animal cruelty video by the ASPCA featuring Sarah McLachlan is an example of a successful advertisement for these reasons: it’s use of emotion, logic, and credibility.
Charleston Animal Society is involved with non-profit organizations that are working to make our world a better place. Whether it is working with children, the elderly, hurting bodies, hurting souls, or the environment, non-profit volunteers, workers, and organizations fight for justice, equality, and hope. In this case Charleston Animal Society works to fulfill its mission by caring for pet parents and pets, providing positive outcomes for at-risk animals, and serving all victims of animal cruelty. And just like any other important phenomenon, non-profiteering is a socially sustained reality. That is, it is made up of real-life people in real-life situations, working together to create and sustain an organization and hopefully working together to create positive change. Charleston Animal Society utilizes both its website and its television advertisements to encourage people to participate in the organization either by donating or adopting. Charleston Animal Society’s website’s organization, content, and layout work primarily to entice visitors to donate money. An examination of the webpage shows the site builders’ careful planning of the design elements. Visitors cannot avoid the large rectangle across the top of the page containing a slideshow of four different pictures. Each of the pictures, a close-up of a dog or cat that has been rescued by the organization, shows a pet with large and sad eyes, forcing the visitor to make eye
What comes to mind when you hear the song “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan? Do you get teary-eyed and change the channel like the musician herself? When I hear this song, the first thing that comes to mind is a bunch of wide-eyed mistreated puppies and kittens. Who is behind these television ads, if you don’t already know? The answer is the ASPCA. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was the first humane society to be established in North America back in 1866. The organization’s goals and mission statement is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States,” (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). This non-profit organization’s focus is to get pets
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. The organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law. The ASPCA is a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and has more than 2 million supporters across the country. It started in New York City and maintains a strong local presence, and now has programs that extend their anti-cruelty mission across the country.
According to the ASPCA website, every sixty seconds an animal is abused. Abuse can be in the form of beating, neglecting, or shearing for fur. Animal abuse is a crime that happens far too often in this country. Many cases of animal abuse go undocumented because dogs, cats, horses, birds, sheep, rabbits, etc. do not have a voice. Animal rights organizations try giving these animals a voice to stop horrible abuse. The Humane Society, ASPCA, and Peta display various images, choose specific diction, and express tone to motivate their audience to contribute to their campaign. These campaigns inform people through their advertisements about the issues occurring by using similar and different methods.
This rack card does not manipulate negative emotions, but rather, is relatable and informative, leaving the audience to interpret the quote for themselves and providing contact information if an individual is interested in animal shelter adoptions in New York. Although the delivery is much less emotionally intense than the typical pet adoption advertisements, this postcard is still able to elicit a sense of exigency in the intended audience. Instead of pressuring the audience to feel guilt for not saving an animal from a shelter, the ASPCA manipulated their advertisement to allow for the audience to think for themselves and make an educated decision about pet adoption, but no necessarily on their own terms. The month of October is emphasized as a national shelter adoption month, which may persuade some of the audience to feel the need to participate in that month
Over the centuries, animals have suffered from cruelty from humans. In the United States, animals are beaten, neglected, or forced to struggle for survival. Animals have been inflicted with pain from humans for reasons other than self-defense. They have been slaughtered for their food and fur for personal gain in profit. In a majority of cases they have even been abused for someone’s own personal amusement or out of rage filled impulses. In some cases animals are found and rescued. They are given the second chance in life to experience what life should be like compared to what they once had.
Unfortunately today there are many cases of animal abuse happening around the world. Animal cruelty or animal abuse can be defined as the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals for purposes other than self-defense. There are many different types of abuse such as using animals for research, using animals for entertainment purposes, abandoning animals to shelters, and animal neglect. We need to raise awareness and find a solution to these issues. Animals are suffering and we need to help them.
The issue of child abuse and neglect is serious, controversial, and is escalating in today’s society. Many people are not aware, but child abuse is rampant in our society. Many child abuse and neglect cases go unreported because a person may not know the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect or perhaps the person or person may feel that this is an private issue and needs to be handle with in the home and no outsiders should be involved. Without the proper awareness of child abuse and neglect and the involvement of everyone this issue will continue to raise our eyebrows.
There are many forms of child abuse. Not only can children be physically abused, but they are also in danger of experiencing sexual abuse. In the more recent years, child sexual abuse has come to the attention of a larger part of society. As such, it is becoming more openly discussed. Child sexual abuse is a growing problem, and the stories that have begun to circulate around the world work to illustrate just how serious the problem is. Despite what society is lead to believe, the sexual abuse of a child is the least common out of all forms of child abuse. Out of the different types of child abuse, neglect is the most common, followed by physical abuse, and then sexual abuse comes at the bottom. Still, of all the cases of child abuse reported to and substantiated by authorities, approximately 15% of them concerned sexual abuse. ). It is possible that there are more cases of child sexual abuse, however, and they simply are not being reported. Due to the number of undisclosed cases of child abuse, researchers have conducted various prevalence studies over the years to determine the true number of sexual abuse of children. These studies have determined that around 20% of women and 5-10% of men in America in were sexually abused as children. A great deal of controversy surrounds the number of male victims of child sexual abuse, due to a lack of quality studies. The problem with prevalence studies is that they don 't all share the same definition of abuse, nor do they share
