1.) What is the one take-away that you will carry with you as you move on from this course? One of the take-aways that I will always carry with me as I move on from this course is that children are like blank slates. They are a clean whiteboard; an empty hard-drive without previous memory. What I’ve learned from this course, in general, is that there are so many different ideas and concepts that affect children and how they grow into mature adults. This course has taught me that children are one of the brightest and most intelligent people on this planet, and we can mutually benefit from them. From this course, I’ve learned different theories and social issues that can be addressed into the children in my life, and how I can grow better by working with infants and children. In Unit 1, this course really focused on the different developmental theories from a variety of theorists, and finishing with a small unit on the importance of brain development within children. From what I’ve understood about the theories and their respective theorists is that there are so many ways in which human beings can develop. In the theories we learned, we have Freud’s psychosexual analysis; Erikson’s psychosocial analysis; Bowlby’s figure-attachment theory, and many more! In each one of the theories, it all focuses on different aspects (sexual, social, relationships, etc.) that can all differentiate one child from another. Piaget, Vygotsky, and Erikson are very well known men for their different theories of development. Although each of them believe different things about how a child develops, I believe that a child can go through all of these theories and benefit from them. I also understand that not everyone is the same, and what might be true for someone could be different for someone else. In my own personal experience, I believe I went through and I’m going through all these different stages in theories throughout my life. I also work at a daycare and we use aspects from each of these theories when going about teaching children. When an infant arrives in the world they are helpless tiny humans who depend on adults for every need from love, to feeding them. It is amazing how these tiny babies grow into adults able to make decisions and become self-dependent. There are many theories about how children develop and what roles the environment plays, what people affect their lives and how events can shape their personalities. Some of these children have and easy life and some have a harder time making that journey to adulthood.
It is important that children get a lot of opportities for education and learning so they can development social and emotional skills to use through life. Children how receive poor opportunities to for an education and learning will not develop as well as child who did because they are not getting the experience and knowledge they need. If a child has good opportunities to learn them to learn then they will have better language skills to communicate with other people in lots of different social setting. They may realise that they have a talent for something such a music or sport and have aspiration to develop this into a career later in life but if they are not given this opportunity they will not have the chance to develop this skill.

Many factors influence children’s development as well as that massive amount of development theories that elaborate on why children do certain things, why children have developmental disorders, or even why some children have developmental delays. Although there are many theories regarding children development and how they are influences, theorist make some great points in the child development but with any theory come flaws such as developmental issues. Famous theorists Freud, Erikson, and Piaget all have different ideas on this topic. Freud was a psychiatrist who believed in unconscious activity of the mind. Erikson was a developmental psychologist who believed that the mind developed in a series of stages, and Piaget was a clinical psychologist who believed in cognitive development. Theorists such as Sigmund Freud, Jean Piaget, and Erik Erikson discusses how their individual theory influences the make-up of the development of children.
There are multiple theories explaining how cognitive development occurs. Piaget’s stage theory, for example, focuses on whether children progress qualitatively through stages of development (Diener 2017). A theory based in nature vs. nurture, Piaget believed a child’s cognition develops biologically as they grow, based on their interactions with the environment. Sociocultural theory, on the other hand, believes children are influenced by the beliefs, values, perceptions, and opinions of those around them. Finally, information processing theories suggest that children process the information they receive and do not merely react to stimulus.
