As a child, I unraveled nature’s beauty and existence. Each new experience brought me feelings of excitement and joy, sparkling my imagination and igniting my curiosity. It all seemed so large back then. Oceans appeared endless as they reached towards the horizon. Treetops seemed to make friends with the puffy-looking clouds as they soared to the sky. Over the years however, as I have grown older and life has become more complex, I am beginning to think less and less about the natural world around me. I glimpse sunset stuck in rush-hour traffic trying to return school after debate practices and only listen to the pitter-patter of the rain when there’s a storm outside. Forests and oceans seemed less appealing as they became intertwined with the urban development. In a way, I was becoming more and more distanced from the so-called nature. So, with an overwhelming desire for adventure and to escape the masses, my family and I drove to Big Bend National Park in Southwest Texas last summer.

My special place is a campsite called Day Maker 23 located on a small island on Namaken Lake in Voyageurs National Park. Voyageurs National Park is located in Orr Minnesota just south of the Canadian border. It is also located on the Eastern edge of the Canadian Shield. An exposed area of Precambrian stone.

Disney World—the greatest place on earth. A place that anyone of age can have fun. According to the official webpage of Disney World, “the unforgettable happens [t]here”. Along with the opinions of many kids, teens, and adults, I agree that it is the greatest place on earth. The magical story book setting brings back the childhood nostalgia every American has felt in their life at least one time. However America is the only country to preserve the innocence from our childhood. But why? Why does America try so hard to protect our childhood innocence from the harsher reality?

I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order. This quote by John Burroughs describes my diversion, outdoors. The outdoors is a place to free myself of all of my stresses and step away from urban living. The activities that I am participating in do not matter, as long as it is a new experience. Whether it is volunteering, trying a new restaurant, or simply going to the park, I appreciate the open-air on a beautiful sunny day. At the FSU reservation I would be able to swim in Lake Bradford on the hot days or rock climbing on the wall available on the site to destress or just to enjoy or a short getaway. Being outdoors also presents me with the opportunity to partake in the simple aspects of life that I would normally take for granted and take notice of the condition of my community.

Paths and nature trails are able to give people a sense of peace, relaxation, a place to exercise, and bring back memories from years ago. Different seasons make you feel a different emotion each time you visit the trail. Due to the change of surroundings, you may feel merry in the winter time, but energetic in the summer time. On the Thomas J. Evans Trail, you get a mixer of a well nourished landscape along with a historical background. City life can be busy and stressful without a break now and then. Visiting a childhood trail can bring forgotten joys that are just waiting to be dug up again. Taking a walk on the trail with the trees high above you and the cement path below gives the impression of openness and freedom. With many animals seen scampering around and the aromas can catch your attention from the various plants that thrive here. Along with the wildlife, numerous people are seen enjoying the scenery along side you. When the end of the year comes I plan to take a walk along it once a week. Throughout winter, the meadow was insignificant and boring, because it was gray and dark green, and those are the colors you see in winter. Right now it is so beautiful with the blooming lupine, and the tall grass. I especially love the pond in front of the building and the way that it gives the illusion that the building is floating. Sometimes there are ducks or geese on the pond or in the grass and they make the pond that much more beautiful. Weyerhaeuser Way is beautiful anyway and anywhere you choose to look at it, but I think the meadow is the most beautiful part. The meadow is especially lovely this time of year, especially when the sun is out and shining. I choose color pencil for my medium because it gives off a kind of faded, and airy look to what you are drawing, and when I think about the meadow I think of light and airy grass and flowers. The flowers are my favorite part of the meadow just because they brighten up the boring grass shades that we see everywhere and make the whole place so much more cheerful and happy, especially with those bright magentas and purples and pinks in

After a long mountainous drive, I arrived at my destination to embrace one of nature’s wonders in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, Abram Falls Trail. Upon departing the car, a cool crisp breeze brushed my face and the aroma of bacon lingered in the early morning air from the neighboring campground. The narrow rocky footpath looked like a tedious adventure, however a gorgeous, vibrant array of red, purple, orange, and yellow wildflowers blossoming at the entrance made the trail alluring. Navigating the rocky, uneven terrain required sturdy footing, but the quiet stillness created a peaceful relaxing atmosphere. The lush pine-oak forest formed a green canopy of shelter above the trail, offering welcome cool shade, as vivid sunlight filtered through the foliage. A sweet honey fragrance permeated the air, as a stunning scene displayed a cluster of purple and pure white

In turn, this allows the visitors to experience the natural beauty, charm, and spiritual significance of the “true world” in almost the exact same light as even the earliest of environmental philosophers, such as Henry David Thoreau. Being exposed and actually walking through these lands allows people to go beyond their desktop screensaver aesthetic admiration for the natural world and really connect to and feel in their own individual way the majestic powers of the wild. One example, among many, of these powers would be the opportunity for extreme solitude, time for personal reflection, and an outlet for escape. The benefits of such introspection could entail an increased sense of vitality, self reliance, confidence and moral strength. “New Englander Joseph Knowles proposed setting aside ‘wild lands’ and establishing outdoor communities where Americans could retreat from the ‘commercialism and the mad desire to make money that have blotted out everything else leaving us not living, but merely existing.”’ There are no advertisements trying to persuade one to buy this, or upgrade to this new form of “must have” technology in the wilderness. My connection with nature that were unveiled during my observations can be summarized in four ways, the first being memories. When I was a kid my first experiences with nature where having fun playing outside and spending time with my family. I had a really vivid imagination in my youth, along with the large property my family owned, I had a vast area to have as much fun as I desired. My family has direct connections with the Mojave Desert, moreover that allowed me to spend a decent block of time in either, the National Park, or learning about our area. During my observations, just being in that similar environment brought back several memories from my youth. Furthermore, that will be something that sticks with me for the rest of my life.

Sitting here and looking back, my life is pretty boring now compared to when I was younger, it was all fun, now as I'm growing up I realize not everything is easy, school is a lot more stressful. I was born here in Longmont colorado, my birthday is in June 3rd so I just turned 13. I am the youngest, yet still taller than my older sister, and two brothers. Walking through the trail full of mud and leaves always made me think about my life. It was always there when I needed to walk and get things off my mind. Looking around watching the leaves fall off tree after tree flying like butterflies, all different colors. When they stopped, they immediately died and they were not coming back alive again. Piled leaves filled up under trees and children ran and jumped on them like they were pillows. These trees tripled the height of humans with numerous branches holding hundreds of leaves. While walking the river flows and it is such a beautiful view with the sun shining right off of it. The ducks and little birds chirping and floating through the smooth water puts a joy to my face.
