Wurtzel is just a woman trying to figure her life while dealing with depression and its symptoms. Having depression at a young age had affected her whole life and has made it difficult to act normal. Wurtzel expresses her sadness and copes in destructive ways such as cutting and doing drugs. The book goes on a journey of her life and the issues she goes through, meeting people, and dealing with additional problems.
The novel’s main conflict is battling with depression and the urges of dealing with depression. I believe young readers would be very interested in the book’s plot and conflict as they will enter a journey of someone’s life going through depression. The book’s straight forward raw material helps readers understand the truth of

She was also wondering what happened to her mental health. As the book progresses, there are very low points and despair, debating suicide or not. The overall moral is the awareness of mental health itself and how depression is never easy. Understanding will help with depression and there is a process to get better. Currently this is not an appropriate book for a teenage audience, but I strongly believe it should be as it discusses topics many present day people deal with. The main protagonist is the author in fact Elizabeth Wurtzel. Wurtzel lives a life filled with depression of rock bottoms and demanding times. Though there is no human figure antagonist, the real rival is depression. Individuals who can relate to Wurtzel will love how she feels and express emotions as they can personally relate to themselves. On the other hand, people who may not relate might hate the fact that she may be trying to little or how she asks to be miserable with her disruptive behavior. Another thing is the fact Wurtzel says certain things that may offend people, which most of the time she doesn't mean. An example, is when she couldn't go to her favorite musical artist (Bruce Springsteen) and was forced to go to camp instead. She was furious with her mom and promised she would get her revenge. Another is when others people pain gives her pleasure and she will do anything to feel better even
I find the theme in this book to be something that an anyday person or child would experience in a day or much longer piece of time. Any person can experience times of confusion and emotional instability, but if that person sticks it out; they will find an answer to their problems or they will answer answer it for themselves. This pertains to a lifelong conflict, but it does not just pertain to that. It relates to a situation in a day, week, or even, an
"Men pray to the gods for health and they ignore that it is in their power to have it."
The book was divided into 3 parts, the first section was Facing Mental Illness. In this section there were 6 chapters that covered every part of her coming to terms with her illness which is bipolar disorder or manic depression. In Chapter 1: Darkness, she gave her history with mental illness and she wasn’t the only person to deal with it within her family. Her father and brother also dealt with depression. There were also many close friends and family members that killed themselves. She makes mention of how she hated what the illness dd to her father and brother but it helped her when she had to deal with
This is similar to the book because the filthies are fighting for acceptance and respect. This is important to the youth because teenagers are going to need the ability to fight for respect.
So when she becomes a vigilante nobody will never know it’s her. So she wrote a suicide note. That way she doesn’t have to go to school. She went back home wrote the suicide note and have some chemicals, drugs, alcohol, and a knife on her desk. Her note read, “Dear whoever is reading this note, I can’t go on any longer. I just can’t take it anymore. I’m so sorry, but it’s the only way for me to be happy. I kept on trying to think positive. But I eventually got to the point that I was ready to die. It is nobody’s fault that I’m gone. I lived a life of anxiety, stress, and sorrow. But it was a good life. I am sorry for the morning you will do. I’m sorry, but I had no friends. No friends at all. Every single day was a struggle. I have been secretly depressed for two years now. I didn’t even think I could make it through the rest of the school year. Every day for two years I have always wanted to do this. So I could fall into eternal sleep. I was tired of the shoes I have been given. I wanted somebody else’s shoes. Or no shoes at all. I wanted a different life. I didn’t want it to be perfect. I just wanted another life where I could be happy. I just wanted a life where I didn’t have to keep any secrets from anybody. I know life is so short. It only lasts for so long. I know there is emotions and feelings I will never experience if I do this. I will never know what it is like to be a parent, to be a local role model, to be myself, to have no secrets, and more. Besides, no one will miss me when I’m gone. I just wish people could see the world through my eyes for once. And I could see the world through their’s. If only I could feel comfortable around others, instead of being someone I am not. Life is a gift everyone says. You should cherish it. Well I wish I had no present. I wish I was someone else. I know now that life is like a flower. That if you water it with happiness and positivity it will
Wurtzel’s first real attempt at salvation is Zachary. She described their relationship as “With Zachary around, I suddenly felt so shielded, so cosseted and coddled and wrapped up in so many layers of protective coating that everything going down with my parents stopped bothering me.”(98) All through her relationship she attempts to prolong it,and the inevitable. To plan the next
According to Image vision, there are many reasons why a person may want plastic surgery. This may be due to social acceptability, change of facial muscles, aging, removal of scars and moles, skin diseases, change gender, and facial trauma (Michele Nappia Stefano Ricciardia MassimoT istarell, 2016). This book taught me that, like Isabel and her friend Amanda, my best friend and I have to switch what we like to do, whether it is lunch tables or where we hang out. In addition, like seven-year-old Ethan and his four-year-old brother, my sister and I fight a lot. It is mostly my sister yelling at me, without me actually fighting back- until recently. My parents always questioned why I did not fight back, but I never knew why; I just hated conflicts and screaming. Now, despite my hatred towards it, I do fight back and cause conflict.
A psychiatric disorder mostly in elderly and late-middle aged people that’s usually accompanied with paranoia.
As the protagonist, her character represents and speaks for majority of the female community. Although the antagonist would seem to be the man on the bus, it is actually society. The antagonist is society because that is what creates the conflict. Throughout a woman’s life, they are tought how to act and react in an
Depression have become a major problem in our society today. People who haven’t experience depression will not understand how it feel and what it can do to a person. Many people also doesn’t understand what depression is, or how it can related to suicidal ideation. In fact, studies have documented that the majority of young suicide victims had depression at the time of death and most suicide survivors were diagnosed with symptoms of clinical depression at the time of their attempt (Mojs, Biederman, Głowacka, Strzelecki, Ziemska, Samborski 2015). It can affect anyone, from young adolescents to college students to the elderly people. There are many reasons that can make someone have major depression. Such as financial problems, family problems, social problems, school, work, etc. These stressors in our daily life can cause anxiety which can increase our stress level significantly, which then can lead to depression. A research said that anxiety disorder have a high comorbidity with depression and that anxiety occur prior to the onset of depressive disorders in many individuals (Batterham, Christensen, Calear 2013). People who experience depression must find way to cope with depression and know how to get help in order to prevent suicidal ideation. The people surroundings, friends and family, must also find ways to recognize the symptoms of depression, and show understandings in order to help those suffering. This research project will help people understand more about
During this time, Beethoven produced nine symphonies, thirty-two piano sonatas, one opera, five piano concertos, and many other works. To demonstrate depression in Beethoven’s music, one only need to analyze his works, specifically ten different compositions; four symphonies, four sonatas, one concerto, and two string quartets. In the same years that Beethoven began to exhibit deafness and depression, he created the “Sonata Pathetique.” This work describes through music Beethoven’s fear of becoming deaf and losing something he highly valued. The sonata began with “Grave,” the first movement of three in the piece. This section was played with great solemnity and seriousness. With a lyrical, mocking style, it was as if every tremor in note reflected
The resentment within the young girl’s family is essential to the novel because one can understand the young girl better as she makes her decision.
From reading this book, I have figured out that the theme was coming of age and facing maturity. What you are about to read are examples of this.
