The word democracy has two major meanings: a government by the people who are the majority, and also it can refer to a government in which the ultimate power is given to the people who directly or indirectly exercises it via a system of representation and usually involves free and fair elections. Democracy refers to a government created through elected representatives. Democracy in the society favors equal rights and believes in the freedom of speech as well as the view of the minority groups in the society. Democracy is based on the principles of the rule of majority and rights of individuals. A democratic society is where all government levels are made accessible to the people (Jensen & Romanowski 30).

Democracy is known as a system of government when all eligible people of a state can voice their own opinions as well as elect representatives. Democracy is not once mentioned in The Declaration of Independence. Pros of a democracy are, its by the people and for the people. Democracy is meant for everybody to be eligible to vote and they are able to vote. The people are also able to participate in what they think, feel , and voice about the political, social, and economic issues that are presented to them. It's in the people's best interest not just the governments. The goal is to find solutions with decision-makers best interest. Thirdly, every individual has the rights, which the state cannot take away from him or her in a democracy. In other words, the human rights of all citizens are protected by the democracy. Finally, democracy is a system of rule by laws of people, not by individuals, and it maintains an order of the government and limits their power as well as protecting the rights of citizens. Every person is equal under the law (Barkawi and Laffey, 2001). Aside from stability and loyalty which democracy brought into our society, we have seen inequality that generates conflicts. These conflicts can be seen in class, race and gender.

Many people live surrounded by history and politics yet go their whole lives without knowing what democracy really is and means. To begin with, Democracy is a form of government that is controlled by the people through the power they possess via-the Constitution in the form of representation. Personally, the fact that we have a democracy-based government is one of the best deals that come with living in the United States. A democracy means that the people have the power to elect the officials that go into the office and power houses to govern our society and make the decisions for our nation. For example, the presidential elections and how voting occurs is a great freedom of this type of government. As a nation, we vote for which candidates are nominated per party groups, then we have the power as a nation to decide which elected candidate per group will win the overall election and be the figure head for our country. The power that the people have in a democracy is huge which is why it is one of the greatest privileges we have living here. Officials are voted in by the people, for the people. The best freedom is having this power to vote to decide who the people, as a whole, want representing both them and their country.

What does Democracy mean? It’s not just the way of running a country, but in this system of governance all qualified citizens get an equal opportunity of involvement in the creation of laws, proposals, general development and it is also preferred Worldwide today, because of the respected freedom that citizens enjoy in executing their choices. Democracy is the “Rule by the People through free and fair elections and other forms of participation” (Collier, 2012). There are several fundamental principles that have been determined to have a democratic government in place. These values were composed by various philosophers around the globe as mutual core components of equal opportunity government (Collier, 2012) . In my opinion, they are all needed to have a real democracy in place. However, after briefly researching each of the principles, I have selected three primary values that I believe to be essential. I have also chosen two that I find to be necessary but a little less imperative.

Democracy is a universally recognised ideal as well as a goal. It is based on common values shared by the people throughout the world community not taking into account the cultural, political, social and economic differences these people hold. Within all of these factors stands a perfect democracy. However, the world is far from perfection, so the question lies at how well democracy in the United States represents

    Lastly, democracy promotes good citizenship. In a democracy, people have a sense of ownership over what the organization does. This promotes a feeling of duty and obligation towards the common good. People take more of an interest in what is going on if they feel like they can have a hand in changing it. It provides the fullest possible development of all its people and gives each person, a sense of responsibility. In a democratic society, reasoning governs the behavior of men and women. Each man and woman actually feels liable for his or her actions. Every person shares some their opinions to common life. Therefore, democracy is not only a form of government, but also a way of life.

Throughout history different types of instrumental regimes have been in tact so civilizations remained structured and cohesive. As humanity advanced, governments obligingly followed. Although there have been hiccups from the ancient times to modern day, one type of government, democracy, has proven to be the most effective and adaptive.
