Forests have been around since the beginning of time. What can be conceived as just a patch of land is really an immense part of life on earth. The plants in a forest produce oxygen for humans as well as all other creatures. This land also provides a home for natural wildlife. But what would Earth look like without these forests? If the rate of deforestation continues to increase then we may have to find out the answer to that question. Deforestation is a recurring global problem which is the act of tearing down a forest to use the land for a different purpose. This goes to show that even the smallest daily decisions can help benefit the environment.
Some look at the benefits of deforestation, which there are some. The major reason for deforestation is agriculture. The land can be utilized as farmland and raising livestock. Another benefit of deforestation is the obvious. Wood. Everyone and their brother uses a product or byproduct of wood every day whether it being for the use of construction, the furniture in homes or the paper in notebooks. Deforestation also creates jobs. Employment is given to the individuals who cut down the trees as well as the ones who are processing them. This employment is also extended to those producing the byproducts such as pencils and paper. The cleared land can also serve as ground for potential urbanization. Crystal Lombardo makes an excellent point on this benefit of deforestation. She says“With 10 billion people expected to be on the planet by the year 2050 and no end to the growth explosion in sight, space is becoming a premium on Earth. When forests are on lands that could be used for habitation, then removing the forest creates more livable space. Homes and businesses can even be built using the products that have been removed from the biome”. Although there are many benefits to deforestation, is it really worth it?
