(Bhasin, 2014) A question to be answered by data mining is how to identify unexpected shopping patterns in supermarkets? Data mining can acquire significant amount of information on customer buying habits and preferences. The importance of this question is to target marketing campaigns to maximize revenue on every day of the week. The data is taken from operational or transactional activities such as, sales, cost and inventory.
There are many ways to present the collected data. The information should be presented in a way that is visual to the user of analytical software. This can be done using spreadsheets, charts or graphs.

It has recently come to my attention that Target Co. utilizes data mining to extract a wide spectrum of information about its customers by accumulating, analyzing and storing data about customer purchases. While I understand that this practice enables Target Co. to simultaneously deliver individually targeted advertisements across its diverse customer groupings, thereby increasing the potential for sales and improving customer retention, I also understand that large amounts of data unearthed by data mining can be manipulated to uncover hidden purchasing patterns to predict and shape future purchase decisions. Therefore, although there are significant benefits to using data mining, there are also serious costs associated with data mining that

As stated in the introduction, the founder, Sol Price named his store Price Club when it first opened its door in 1976 at a converted airplane hangar on Morena Boulevard in San Diego. Initially, the goal was to have greater buying power by selling to small business, non-profit organization and government. “The Price Club philosophy was simple: Keep overhead to an absolute minimum.” (Fox, M. 2009). However, it was soon realized it wasn’t profitable enough to keep the membership to an exclusive group such as small business and government so the membership was opened to the general public at an annual membership fee of $25. In doing so it became extremely profitable to the point where the employees were paid higher wages with benefits than typical retailers. The company also started expanding throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. In 1983 the first Costco brand warehouse location opened in Seattle, WA. Costco became the first company to grow from zero to $3 billion in sales in less than six years.
