In my mind, I can clearly remember being a part of D.A.R.E program in 5th grade. I remember that we did myriad of various activities and short performances that would help us say no to drugs, tobacco, and alcohol later on in the future. Then when it was graduation time, we presented little plays to our parents. So, when it becomes to be that time in the future when being pressured I will be able to apply that information I learned your side. So why not take some time to help students of TMS now? Would you want to see our kids go down the wrong path? Well I wouldn’t. With this program’s help, we can teach kids how to live a healthy and a happy life by saying no to peer pressure, tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. to the situation I am in, …show more content…
Well the right response would be to say no! Some kids just can’t do that. Therefore, this program could help them develop ways to do so. Not only that the students won’t make the right decision, they could also get in trouble. When I was in 6th grade, one of the school counselors once said,” Peer pressure makes some kids skip class, just because popular students are doing it.’’ This shows that students are pressured to skip class, and they shouldn’t be. They should get all the education they possibly can to be successful later on in life. *SENSORYT DETAIL* about stress. So why not help them overcome peer pressure now? Peer pressure can lead to addiction, drinking, and drug abuse. Let’s do something about this before it’s too late! Tobacco is becoming to be a huge problem in the middle school. . Tobacco contains more than 4,000 different chemicals. EXPLAIN IT. A. Studies also show that because the brain is still in the development process, and if you choose to start smoking, it will cause lower grades in school. So, why not help students do better in school? Not only smoking causes health problems, but it also causes short life expectancy. If you help them now, all youth will have a chance of a longer, and a happier life! Alcohol use is still fairly small issue in the middle school. So, let’s eliminate that issue before it becomes something bigger. Do you want the kids to be able to learn all that they
Students smoke because they wanted to take risks, are looking for something to calm nerves, relieve anxiety and to be social according to
middle (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students, CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analyzed data from the 2011-2014 National Youth Tobacco Surveys (NYTS). In 2014, e-cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among middle (3.9%) and high (13.4%) school students. Between 2011 and 2014, statistically significant increases were observed among these students for current use of both e-cigarettes and hookahs (p<0.05), while decreases were observed for current use of more traditional products, such as cigarettes and cigars, resulting in no change in overall tobacco use. Consequently, 4.6 million middle and high school students continue to be exposed to harmful tobacco product constituents, including nicotine.” (Arrazola
When i was in an eight week D.A.R.E program it taught me a lot about how to be safe when pressured and avoiding bad situations. If you don’t know what D.A.R.E stands for it stands for Drug, Abuse, Resistance, Education. I’m going to give you three topics on the D.A.R.E program. In my first topic i’m going to talk about alcohol. In my second paragraph i’m going to tell you about tobacco. In my third and final paragraph i’m going to tell you a little bit about peer pressure
In 2014, 24.6% of high school students reported that they used some type of tobacco product in the past 30 days (‘National Youth Tobacco Survey’). There are several factors that influence youth to begin using tobacco. Although it is clear that peer pressure can initiate smoking, multiple studies find that tobacco marketing causes an increase in youth tobacco use.
By coincidence, a study tracking more than 2,500 students at 10 Los Angeles schools who had never smoked tobacco, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, came to the opposite conclusion. It said ninth graders who had tried e-cigarettes were far more likely than other students to start smoking “combustible tobacco” (cigarettes, cigars, hookahs) within a year.
Teens smoking has been a public concern for centuries. In a recent article published earlier this year by Fox News, highlighted the rate and risk of teens smoking and the rise of e-cigarettes. One of the main question posed was, why do teens smoke? There is no definite answer, however; a few intelligible explanation has been given. Biology and developmental vulnerability are the few partially reason given. Biology studies shows that, until in their 20s and adolescents Brain is not equate enough to measure and assess assess race and long-term consequences.one reason is that teen are very vulnerable, which makes them an ideal target for cigarrette companies. luckly the federal government has set strict rules that limit tobacco companies who sets
I remember the D.A.R.E. programing and I learning about the side effects of drugs. From young age I was educated about the dangers of drugs from my parents and this program helped solidify the dangers about drug abuse for me. However, I do believe that these sort of programs should continue into teen years as well. I believe that programs these programs can be even more effective if they continue them through high school graduation to continually reminder the student's the importance of living a drug free life. I believe that discussing how to avoid situations at which one may be put in a difficult position or how to not give into peer
What do you see when you look at this picture? Do you see tobacco wrapped in crayon wrappers, the same crayon wrappers that are usually wrapped the with actual crayons, that your child may play with? Those bright colors are a clear sign that tobacco use is introduced at a very early age even if not intentional. What many people see when they look at this picture is the saddening future of what the new generations are faced with in today’s day and age. The influence of tobacco starts an early age for some adolescents and becomes a familiar face and regular routine by the time they are in their early teens. The importance of this matter is something that is often look passed upon and never spoken about until the end and sadly that’s too late for some people.
Although, the campaign had a significant decrease in the rates of smoking in adolescents, a survey conducted haphazardly in 2005 illustrated that smokers in secondary schools were 19% boys and 17% girls (which smoked prior to the week of conducting the survey) (Woods, 2009). Therefore, the “Smarter than Smoking” campaign has performed various interventions from the year 2005 onwards, to further decrease the numbers of smokers in the adolescent population (STS, 2009).
But studies shows that underage teens who begin to drink have no responsibility when it comes to drinking. That being said some may get too addicted causing a disruption in school, or death. In the book Teen Hotline - Alcohol it says “Alcohol is implicated in some 41% of all academic problems and 28% of all dropouts.” (Malloy, 72). Money goes towards buying books and school supplies right? Not quite. According the book “Alcohol” it says, “ Each year students spend more than 5 billion dollars on alcoholic beverages more than they spend on their books. (Paul, 73). Out of those 2 there is another problem that is worse. In “Teen Addiction” it states, “240,000 to 360,000 of the nations 12 million current undergraduates will die from alcohol related causes, more than the number who will get masters and doctorates combined. If we do not put an end to it then it could get
Many tobacco products also contain a highly addictive chemical called nicotine. This is the substance in tobacco that makes it so addictive and easy for teens to get hooked on. Once the teen experiences how addictive the substance can be, They often find it hard to overcome the withdrawal symptoms that go along with it. This is why many teens get addicted so easily at a young age and then can not overcome the challenge to quit. It is important that we teach our youth about the short term and long term effects of these different tobacco products and how harmful it can be on their body at such a young age, how tobacco advertisements and the people around them can negatively influence them and begin to drive them in the wrong direction, how addictive tobacco can be once a teen is hooked on it and what makes that product so addictive, and how tobacco products can lead to many more lethal drugs if they cannot control their addiction and learn to quit at a younger age. All of this and more will help restore our youth and help protect them against premature usage of tobacco
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Four of every five persons who use tobacco begin before they reach adulthood; more than 3,000 young persons begin smoking each day. In addition, smoking is addictive-three of four teenagers who smoke have made at least one serious, yet unsuccessful, effort to quit. The importance of tobacco use cessation programs for youth is addressed in Healthy People 2000: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives and in recently passed legislation related to the Goals 2000 National Education Goals. CDC's Guidelines for School Health Programs to Prevent Tobacco Use and Addiction states that tobacco cessation programs are needed to help young persons who already
The kids using these things are content with how they are, and have no hopes of changing who they are because of the “friends” that they have, and the negative image that would be cast upon them. Even with that said, I think that some kids would be willing to listen, and some of those kids may be those that are unhappy with their habits, and actually looking to make themselves a better individual. The best way to teach students about drugs and alcohol would be to have a limited attendance assembly, with sign up required to attend. The reason for making it limited attendance is that if only kids that want to go, or want to learn are there, it will be much more effective. If kids that could care less about the topic, or those not seeking to change are there, they will disrupt constructive discussion. Along with that, if not everyone is there, people may be more open to talking about things, without being in fear of being judged by their friends, and fellow peers. I feel that this is a hard discussion to have in a
Tobacco is a really big problem with teens and adults. Many people are fighting the struggle to get away from these habits once you see how tobacco can effect
As teenagers start to smoke on a regular basis, there is a progression of negative effects. Some effects such as an addiction, a disease, and possibly a result of death could do serious harm to the body according to the Washington Post (Brady A.3). Currently, there is an estimation of about 3,300 teenagers who try smoking and 700 to 800 of those teens become addicted each day (A.3). There are various amounts of tobacco products that teenagers are attracted by, such as electronic cigarettes and cigars, which are currently uprising in the youth population. Electronic cigarettes have had a large increase between the years 2011-2012 (“Emerging Tobacco Products” …NP). The number of middle school students have been able to use the electronic devices went from 0.6% to 1.1% between the years 2011-2012. The percentage of high school students who use
