I think the culture and kind of people you grew up with and around shape who we are immensely and influence our beliefs and bias. Even though most form their own opinions and morals we grow older we still have cognitive bias that we were born and raised with. Our culture makes us who we are, it is the foundation that our lives were built on even before we were born. Saying this there are so many different cultures and with this comes different experiences and bias for each one. The culture I grew up with and around was the traditional southern baptist culture which is a culture with very distinct beliefs and values. Any culture I think shapes your perspective on everything but especially any culture that is mostly rooted in religion. This culture shaped my perspectives from the start and they were the same as my parents and everyone else I was around. As I have grown older that has changed I have developed my own opinions and ideology for different things but the fundamentals from what I grew up in and will continue to grow up around will stay with me. I think the southern culture sometimes gets put on as something that it is not but it is what has taught me to respect everyone, to value family and friends over anything, it has taught me to take responsibility for me, and cherish the small thing in life. All cultures are different and with that different morals and experiences growing up and in daily life. In the past few weeks we have learned about a multitude of different cultures and the experiences and bias that they go through. I think every culture has bias against them in one way or another but some have it immensely worse than others. I think every culture influences heavily the beliefs and experiences of the people in the culture when they are growing up because it is all they know and all they have experienced. As people grow older some stay strictly with the beliefs of their parents and family but other start developing new beliefs but their culture will always be with them and influence their experiences and decisions in life. Because we all have bias, some without even knowing we have them it is natural to have conflicts with others because of these biases. The only thing we can do about this
However, as Americans we are able to turn to what we have learned growing up. Once we are born our family, siblings, and our own culture influence us. We are bought up with certain beliefs and traditions. However, I do think that culture does influences how people are permitted to be expressed and how they are perceived. As for social experience people react to different experience in different ways. If someone has been in a certain situation I believe they learn from that experience.
It doesn’t matter what kind of ethnicity you are, or how you were brought up. Everyone is deeply rooted in their own culture. “Culture” has a different meaning to everyone. Comparing American culture to Chinese culture we will find many different meanings to the word “culture”. For example, we Americans are always looking for something bigger and better for our future, and the Chinese are content with a small reserved lifestyle with no intentions of changing it for something bigger. A culture is a way of life of a group of people-the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and are passed along by communication and imitation from
Take a moment to think about the following question: what is culture? Culture is everything a person does, believes in, creates, came from, and has done. It is also so much more than this simple list, but this is a good idea of what it generally is. Culture affects a lot of things as well. It can affect what you do, how you do certain things, and how you see things comparison to others. Culture is a major factor in how people perceive the world and those around them. Everybody sees the world differently through their cultural glasses. Some people see things as foreign and confusing, while others see the same things as daily life. The idea of different cultural viewpoints is shown in many articles throughout the years. Each of these stories
Do you think that your culture impacts your decisions more than your personal opinion does? Or maybe that your culture has nothing to do with your viewpoint? There is a lot of controversy on this topic. A person 's culture majorly affects how one views the world, however personal opinion, experiences also play a role. Personal experiences help to shape people into who they are today.
Have you thought of someone’s culture as weird? Have you thought that you are completely different from them? If so, what prompts us to make that assumption. Culture is a very good reason for this. So, to what extent does one’s culture inform the way one views others and the world? Culture informs a person on the way others are and the world.
All things considered, we believe that ones culture may or may not inform the way he or she views others and the world around them. Some people do let their culture inform the way he or she views others and the world around them as shown in the story "An Indian Fathers Plea" by Robert Lake. Though many people do not let their culture inform the way he or she views others and the world around them as shown in the story "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker with Dee straying from how she was raised. Yet those are just a few people who do or don't let their culture inform them about the world or others. Everyone is different and people should understand that yes some people do use their culture for information about things, but many people this days
Cultural immersion is an essential part of the education experience. It has been used throughout time to allow people to understand those whose ideas and beliefs differ from their own. The experiences gained through immersing in an unfamiliar culture allow the mind to grow in ways that are beyond comprehension. Because our nation is advancing, and merging ides from other cultures, this process is more important than ever. Cynthia Kratzke and Melissa Bertolo (2013) state that if we only teach concepts and language from other cultures we are limiting the ability of future generations to be able to work with other cultures (p.1). Cultural immersion is a way for one to reach a new insight they may not have otherwise gained. Jesus Nieto (2006) says there are main goals to these experiences: 1) to interact with people of a different culture 2) to gain insight into aspects of others 3) to be of a minority group in a setting 4) to gain a new perspective on one’s own beliefs and values (p. 77).
“Culture is sometimes described as a lens through which we view the world, meaning that one’s culture influences their perceptions and interactions in everyday life” (Davis, 2006). Every culture has different beliefs and customs
Culture does affect how one views others and the world. It affects other people's view of others and the world because people are so used to their culture that they believe that everyone else should believe and do what they do the same way. In the story "Two Ways to Belong in America" it states that Mira believed that Baharti should be pure to her Indian culture and Mira also ended up marrying an Indian guy, which shows that she wants to stick to someone with that culture. People should always do what they believe is best and not have any influence from people.
A person’s culture can influence what they do on a day-to-day basis. This is most obvious in Texas, my home state. Our culture is very strong as we are always promoting companionship and friendliness to anyone and everyone.
First, the religious culture that impacts me is being Lutheran. A value we have is going to church to pray, we are expected to participate and be kind and respectful to everyone joining us. I do this by going to church on Sundays and Wednesdays, (confirmation), along with going to church choir too. I attend the services quietly, and always try to respect people´s space. Another value is our spiritual beliefs, we pray to
Race, gender, age and class shape the experience of each individual on earth. Studies show race, gender, age and class as interlocking encounters that impact all aspects of life. American individuals think similarly when they encounter other races, genders, age and class other than their own. American’s tend to pass unfair judgement which can limit ones experience in learning about someone's culture other then their own. It all depends on what a person has been raised to believe, for instance one could be taught that woman only should stay home and take care of the family and someone else could be taught that a woman should go to college and work for a living. In America the freedom that this country stands for allows cultures to express their
The cultural assignment allowed me to gain a new perspective on the differences of others. I have grown up in a household of dissimilar belief systems. My mom is a dedicated Christian while my dad is unassociated with any religious beliefs. Though, he grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness. There differing belief systems have been the cause of various conflicts within their relationship. I often wondered if people with contradicting beliefs could effectively and peacefully discuss their belief systems. This cultural experience showed me that a peaceful discussion is possible between individuals of dissimilar beliefs.
(Origin) When thinking about my family and our roots I identify my family’s places or origin as Germany and Ireland. A majority of my family is of German ancestry and the one exception is my grandmother and she is Irish. I identify these too places as where my family came from due to stories that I have hear from family members and to the traits that each member of my family carries. A majority of my family are all blonde hair, with blue or brown eyes which have a lot of similarities to people from Germany. My family as very few of the traits from the Irish side but the only ones the I have been told are that some people in our family freckle a lot
