People have always had some kind of enforcement of law to protect them. The police officer’s main focus is to protect the citizens they are around and serve justice to criminals that get in the way of protecting citizens. This is an interesting career choice because the people with this career have a daily duty to keep the streets safe and clean from any dangers. The topics that will be covered are the salary of detectives their main duty, the typical day they experience, years on the job that are rewarded in different ways like a new job opportunity or an increase in pay, educational requirements, and skills required.

According to Shae Irving, the word “criminal” is describe as “the society’s belief that certain act are unacceptable and that any perpetrator should be punish” [ (Irving, 2008) ]. Enter the American Criminal Justice System. This paper will give a brief description of the Criminal Justice System and its purpose, and describe the key component of this system. It will also discuss the purpose and function of each component and their main responsibilities.

“Understand, our police officers put their lives on the line for us every single day. They've got a tough job to do to maintain public safety and hold accountable those who break the law” (“Police Quotes” 1). I have always dreamed of being in law enforcement. Officers of the law do a great deal in our everyday lives just to keep society safe. I want to be an officer to be able to make an impact on many people's lives. It’s important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.

Postner and Munson (1979), identified values as being the things that matter to us or what we consider to be the right thing and Sullivan, Sullivan and Buffton (2002) suggest that it is our values that drives our behaviour, inform our decision making and actions. Rokeach (1973) made a differentiation between personal and social values. Personal values relate to our personal goals e.g. inner harmony whereas social values reflect our goals for society e.g. equality, being treated with dignity and respect. Davies et al (2007) identified that values together with our assumptions, attitudes and beliefs is what defines cultures.

Our criminal justice system has many major functionaries that all consist up of helping our society running orderly and productively. One of the groups known for the society’s protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances is known as the police force. The role and responsibility of this group is of great importance because their job handles many duties that we may not think of initially.

Since mankind began there has been crime but more importantly, there has been people who are interested in stopping those who partake in crime. Though this job has been taken up by many throughout the years; the schooling, training, and daily tasks are by no means easy for the salary law enforcement officers are given.

In today’s continuous changing world, the one thing that remains constant for most of us is our personal value system of beliefs, known as ethics. Ethics can also be referred to as morals. Therefore, ethics are those morals that reflect and indicate issues that concern behaviors that are right or wrong and the good and bad habits of individual character. The Investigation Function Another role that is portrayed very differently in movies and on television. Detectives or investigators are the minority within the system. Investigators are civil servants, knowledgeable of legal rules and procedures, and tend to follow procedures unlike the media portrayal of them breaking all the rules. Investigators work close with area police stations by connecting multiple incidents or assisting with further investigation of murders or robberies. Investigators sometimes work in plain clothes and assist in stings to arrest prostitutes or drug dealers. Investigators begin working on cases after the police have made the first contact with a suspect, they will follow the suspect to gather additional information or to do further investigation of a crime. Investigators work alone most of the time and do well undercover since they are not tied to a specific police station. The down side of undercover work is, it is extremely dangerous and sometimes they have to participate in illegal or immoral activities. Many changes have occurred to the investigation section of the justice system. To help investigators with their jobs, patrol officers have been taught tactics to help provide more detailed information from crime scenes and on-scene interviews. Investigators use technology to compare evidence collected at current crime scenes with evidence found in previous scenes that may be unsolved or to connect one criminal to the similar crimes.

With ethics providing the backdrop for our conduct, on every level from individual to global, studying them is an indispensable way to analyze our behaviors and evaluate our decision making criteria. Different ethical approaches give us perspectives we may not consider from our individual default point of view, while affording us the opportunity to look for shifts in mindsets, attitudes, and values over time, allowing us to see our progress as a society. Additionally, we’re able to compare and contrast our own governing principles against those of others around us, showing us where we fit in our society, as well as measuring how well we’re meeting our self imposed standards. A very important characteristic of values is that, due to the centrality of values in our lives, and their subsequent importance to human beings, the honouring and fulfilment of our values creates a feeling of life and vitality and deep rooted satisfaction (Rue, 2001). Due to the fact that certain values are not just a means to an end state, but also lead towards a greater good for society and other people (for example values such as caring, empowerment and solidarity), values have intrinsic merit of their own – away/apart from any specific system of beliefs (Prilleltensky, 2000).
