These days, our earth has been filled by a lot of waste. There is a lot of garbage, plastic waste, and electronic waste. We always produce it and dump it when we need the new one. Our waste are piling up and continuously accumulating. Plastic waste is one of the biggest problems for us now. And our solution in this problem is recycling. In my opinion, recycling is a way to manage used items into new products. We can reduce, reuse, and recycling (3R) waste management (Peter, 2013). We can reduce our waste clothes with reuse it. There are some reasons why peoples recycle used or unwanted items, which are, prevent wasting unusable materials that still have usage after recycled, reduce the application of raw materials, reduce energy

“Why should I even recycle?”, is far too common of a statement is the 21st century. As a culture we have industrialized our lives, and with this industrialization we have created a lot of waste. During the 20th century, people were too excited about the innovation of paper plates and plastic utensils that they did not stop to think, “I wonder if this is okay for our environment?” Well, after years of society promoting convenience instead of sustainability, we have produced a mass amount of waste. The amount of trash produced in the world yearly has been tripled since 1960. I think some people forget that matter can not be created nor destroyed, and a styrofoam cup can take millions of years to decompose. Humans of our modern society throw their garbage away as if it disappears once it hits the can. Yet, that is not the case at all. Trash is merely relocated to be rejoined with more trash. These massive piles of waste sit at dumps for years hardly beginning to decompose because of the environment they are immersed in. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an ocean gyre containing vast amounts of debris, and it is estimated to be the size of the continental U.S.. Americans produce trash at about 4.6 pounds a day per person. Some recycling is picked out from landfills, but most is left to be dealt with by other processes. Trash that is not recycled, composted, or burned is buried in landfills. The process of decomposition of trash in landfills takes hundreds of years to complete.

Recycling is the key to a successful environment for generations to come. When I think about recycling, several synonyms come to mind, like reduce, reuse, reclaim or recover. We need to be promoting recycling of old items and materials at school, work, in restaurants and at home. When we reuse objects or make them new again, the old material is not wasted, and new materials are not being produced.

Recycling, such a simple concept of making new from old, and yet most Americans don’t seem to grasp the concept. Why is this you ask? That is what I am going to find out. Recycle, the name itself nearly tells all. To recycle is to take old and make new from the old material. Glass, metal, and plastic can all be recycled by being melted down and remolded into something new. Paper can also be recycled, only the process is a bit different. When industries recycle paper they start by taking the old paper and mashing it into a pulp. The process is very similar to how they make new paper from wood; the biggest difference is the amount of bleach used. What is recycling and why should people care about it? When people recycling, waste products such as plastic and glass that are not used anymore are turned into new products (Kukreja n.p.). “Each person creates about 4.7 pounds of waste every single day” (Kukreja n.p.). With all of the waste being produced and not recycled may result in air and water pollution making an environment unhealthy Recycling will not only help to decrease air and water pollution, but will save money in the economy. We, humans, are producing waste every day, polluting and destroying our planet. To save the world, many people believe recycling is the obvious solution. It is the process of converting certain waste into a reusable material. Therefore, the recycle motto is “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle”. However, have you ever wondered why the word recycle is placed at the end? Well, it’s because it is not the only way to reduce waste and save the world from global warming. Recycling may have many advantages, but its disadvantages’ list is not a short one either. Recycling may look very simple and easy method, but when there is a need for a new unit of waste recycling, it takes up a lot of space. Not to mention the amount of money the building costs along with paying the staffs, buying new utility vehicles, upgrading the recycling unit and different types of chemical disposals. It is not only expensive but also, unhygienic, unsafe and unsightly with piles of waste materials on every location. These wastes spread infectious diseases putting human health at risk. Public garbage cans, waste management vehicles and even several businesses all promote the need for recycling. These things should serve as a constant reminder to us of the importance of recycling. Consumers produce a large scale of garbage (ARTICLE 1) the average American discards seven and a half pounds of garbage every day. If Americans take an active role in recycling, we can work to reduce the amount of garbage currently in our landfills and dumps. Recycling has become more of a responsibility rather than a way to earn or save money. It can help clean and protect our environment for each other and the generations ahead. Landfills are growing quickly, which are affecting our environment as well as our resources. This is where recycling materials such as plastic, paper, glass, etc., play a huge role in conserving our resources.

With so many waste and recycling centers in our society, I don’t understand why the percentage of wastes being recycled hasn’t increased. According to Mike Biddle, guest speaker of TED Talks, “We Can Recycle Plastic,” states, “Mother nature wastes very little and that humans should not see ourselves as consumers, but see ourselves as users of resources that we are waiting on to be transformed…”. Recycling is the process of converting waste into new, and improved products, we are required to recycle all bottles, cans, paper, and plastics, except for plastic bags. This project deems to prove the immediate and long-term effects it has on our planet; however, many don’t realize the benefits of recycling. Although this project has been going on for quite some time, there needs to be an increase considering the excessive amounts of waste we humans create. While many believe that recycling has no impact, schools and other public properties should encourage recycling.

When we hear "recycling," we think of "doing." People are lazy, and the last thing we want to do is walking up to a recycling bin. Us being lazy is the most prominent problem with why we need to start to care about our environment again. As always, we drink plastic water bottles, use plastic bags, eat from plastic containers and decide to toss them away in trash cans, and we still overlook that such action is equivalent to piling up the dumps in the city and under the ocean. For so long, many people have neglected the importance of utilizing recycling bins and reusing resources for the health of ourselves and our environment. After analyzing many articles, I have concluded we all should start using our reusable supplies, utilizing recycle bins, and refusing plastics because we need to reduce landfill waste, avoid consumption of plastic chemicals, prevent trade association for American chemical companies earning millions from us turning the Earth into a junkyard.

Imagine walking down a forest path, feeling the cool fall breeze, hearing the birds chirping, breathing in the fresh air. Earth's environment is wonderful and as stewards of this plant, it is every human's job to protect and even enhance its beauty. Dumping incinerated garbage into a hole in the Earth is not exactly being a good steward. However, science has developed the technology of recycling, and people should use this blessing as readily as possible. In other words, everyone should recycle, and if they won't do it on their own, recycling should become a requirement. Recycling should be mandatory because it helps minimize pollution, conserve energy, preserve natural resources, and create jobs.

“Today U.S. citizen’s produce over 250 million tons of municipal solid waste, before recovery, which is close to one ton per person”, says Jay Withgott’s 6th edition book. The world is growing in population and people are just exceeding in the amount of waste they are adding to the Earth. Waste is defined as any unwanted material from a human activity or process. Municipal solid waste is an extensive problem in the United States, but so is Industrial solid waste and Hazardous waste. If everyone repurposed items that can be reused, we would be saving plenty of resources. Recycling is the one of the best ways to get rid of waste. Recycling is the process of turning used materials into materials that can be reused as a material or for a new purpose. Per the North Carolina Data Waste Management, the amount of trash North Carolinians throw away, would fill enough Dumpsters to line the length of North Carolina’s Interstate 40 more than six times in one year. That is almost 2,750 miles of dumpsters each year. We are going to focus on how recycling saves energy, conserves waste by reusing materials, and protects natural resources if recycling materials are being used. This relates to the protection of land and ecological resources and why one should recycle.

When discussing solutions to try and help preserve the planet and sustain resources for many generations, the first thought of the majority of the public is a popular slogan-Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Many households have access to recycling receptacles, either through their waste management company or close by facilities. And yet, as of 2014, the most recent data provided by the EPA, only 34.6 percent of Americans recycle (EPA.gov, 2017). Although many people are reminded to reduce, reuse, and recycle at practically every street corner and through advertisements and awareness campaigns, many are not fully educated on the benefits of recycling nor are they fully aware of the risks and environmental impacts associated with excessive wastefulness and overconsumption. Through recycling and a conscious effort, there are many ways an individual can help the environment. Recycling should be an integral part of everyone’s daily lives as a way to help save the planet for current and future generations and although it may cause some adverse effects, the benefits greatly outweigh the pitfalls.

Recycling does a ton to protect our environment. Things like plastic and aluminum are very hard to break down, so when they are thrown into landfills, they pollute the soil and stay there for a long time to come. Landfills take up huge portions of land which may sometimes be unusable after. In Lawrence’s article, Daviess County was estimating that “more than 2,600 tons of waste could be removed from the landfill each year” (Lawrence). These were numbers gotten from collecting curbside recyclables from certain counties and estimating for how much could be taken from trash. If everyone person could recycle like that, the amount of trash taken from a landfill would be record breaking. Another effect to the environment that could be helped from recycling are the oceans. Plastic causes much damage to the oceans since it is nearly impossible to be broken down. In the article, it mentions that plastic is "persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic substances” (UNEP year book: phosphorus and plastic pollute world's oceans). It heavily affects wildlife in the ocean causing problems with the ecosystems. If everyone recycled, problems like these wouldn’t be happening.

There are many things that get thrown away on a daily basis. Have you ever wondered how the garbage that you are producing everyday affects the planet? Clearly most of the garbage that people throughout the country produce cannot have a positive effect on the planet. Many people don’t realize that paper, plastic, and any cans are the most recyclable items out there. One can simply reduce the use of plastic water bottles by buying a refillable water bottle and using that every day to drink your beverages. There are many people that say recycling is a waste of time and the cost for recycling is way too much. Other also say that they don’t recycle because they don’t think it is worth it or important or they just simply don’t care about it at all. Although this may be true, recycling is one of the many things being done to try and reduce the amount of damage being done to the earth. Doing things as simple as buying a refillable water bottle, doing all paperwork electronically, and talking to others about the efforts you have made to make the Earth healthier and cleaner can really make a big change in the amount of garbage produced every day. By doing so, one will not only be recycling, but also reducing the amount of garbage being produced and even find new ways to reuse as much plastic and paper as possible.
