In the world of politics, there are many people who tend to view the world through a lense that justifies as to how they view the world around them. Specifically in the US today, there are individuals who are either conservative, or are liberals. While comparing conservatism and liberalism, they are extremely different in terms of definition. Conservatism is defined as an individual who, “believes in the value of established and traditional practices in politics and society”(Merriam Webster). In a broad perspective, conservatism is traditionally interpreted when a person is unwilling to accept change. In contrast, liberalism is defined, “ [as a] belief in the value of social and political change in order to achieve progress” (Merriam Webster).
Liberals had dominated American society for most of the 1900s. The 1960s was widely known for being the age of counterculture, social reforms, and liberals. The era witnessed many advancements like racial equality such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a strong advancement in political liberalism, and a significant increase in the power and influence of government-funded social programs as a result of Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society reforms. Beginning with the election of Nixon, however, followed a gradual return to conservatism whether religiously, politically, or economically. The resurgence of conservatism in American politics and government in the years 1964-2005, was caused in
After studying the differences between liberalism and conservatism, it is differentiate the two ideologies. During the colonial era, liberals supported Democracy over monarchy and wanted freedom and rights. Conservatives, wanted to keep the monarchy. Based on these ideas, all Americans are liberal because they are in favor of freedom and rights. However, with the new ideas, now Liberals believe that the government and laws need to change for the new times.
United States Presidential Election is not directly elected by the voters, but electoral candidate votes. That is the reason why over half voters vote Hillary Clinton but Donald J. Trump became the 45th president of the United States. Massachusetts supported Democratic party in the presidential election 2016 with more than sixty percent approval rating without a doubt. In history from 1928 to 2016, Massachusetts has voted 19 times to democratic party and four times to Republic party. Why Massachusetts becomes a real deep-blue state in just shy of past two hundred years? There are three texts illustrate this phenomenon from historical factor and human factor.
From the Late 1950’s through the 1960’s a movement started to reclaim the idea of freedom. Until the 1960’s, American Politics was dominated by liberalism. Many presidents defined themselves as being liberal, and the presidents who didn’t during their presidency may be called centrist or left leaning in today’s political climate. The idea to reclaim the idea of freedom gave birth to the Conservative movement. Conservatism was not extinct prior to the 1964 presidential election, it was diminished and liberalisms was thought as “…not only the dominant but even the sole intellectual tradition.” (Foner 308) During the late 1950’s a group of politicians mapped out in private what it actually meant to reclaim freedom. They felt that the “left” or liberals had forcefully changed the definition of freedom through policy implementations. The new conservative definition of freedom was “Freedom, in this view, meant decentralized political powers, limited government, and free market economy.” (Foner 308), the definition criticized the New Deal Coalition and questioned whether the morals and values of freedom had deteriorated. The New Deal was implemented in the 1930’s in response to the economic and social crisis. Many people, especially liberals, looked to blame Conservatism as a whole for the Great Depression and the rise of Fascism abroad. The looming Cold War and a steadily increasing government size gave a spark and attracted many different
In the popular sense, neoconservatism can be summarised as the belief that America has a duty to make the world a better place through military intervention where necessary. Most neoconservatives believe that the U.S. has a responsibility to act as a “benevolent global hegemon” and that its military might should be employed around the world to promote both American interests and values. Neoconservatives believe that the threats facing the US can no longer be contained and therefore must be prevented. Any regime that is hostile to the US and could pose a threat would be confronted aggressively. it is in the interests of the United States, they argue, to promote the development of democratic regimes abroad, as much as democracies do not wage
The resurgence of conservatism in U.S. politics in government was caused by the reaction to the liberal politics, economics, social values, civil right movement and the controversy over the Vietnam war.
Conservatism is, and has been a topic surrounded by discussion and debate in the United States as well as the rest of the world. With the roots of liberalism grounded so well in the foundation of the United States, conservatism, through the lens of liberalism, has had its own take on society.
Time has amounted to the separation between liberal and conservative ideals. With each year the parties grow stronger and stances on controversies grow larger. They vary in ideologies for many different reasons. The ideologies liberals have today share the same major focuses and concerns the founding fathers had. The conservative also takes the founding father ideas but twist it to a more patriarchal stance.
Conservatism is any political philosophy that favors tradition (various religions, cultural or nationally defined beliefs and customs) in the face of external forces for change, and is critical of proposals for major social change. Some Conservatives seek to preserve the status or to reform society slowly, while others seek to return to the values of an earlier time. (Philosophybasics.com, 2016)
The American government is divided into two essential concepts that control the political power, regulations, and opinions of its citizens. These concepts are Liberalism and Conservatism, and each holds different premise of political power. Liberals demand academic freedom and oppose the government control of press, arts, and ideas. Conservatives demand material freedom and oppose the government control of trade, business, and wealth. Liberals believe that men’s intelligence can reach to the furthest place of the universe, while Conservatives believe men have freedom to go anywhere on Earth but their minds should be restricted to keep their morality. From here, the difference between these two concepts is their ideologies. As people get older, they constantly make up their minds about political issues, and decide which political orientation fit their backgrounds and situations. For instance, religion and education are the influential factors that influence one’s decision to be either Liberal or Conservative. In fact, I wasn’t raised in the political environment of both Liberalism and Conservatism. But the way I see things work and how our social issues are handled by the government, I consider myself to be a Liberal.
A liberal government attempts to achieve equality for it's citizens. Liberal government is emphasized to fix problems within society. Classical liberalism was coined by Adam Smith. It created a laissez-faire government and then eventually called U.S conservativism (Roskin, 2013). Modern liberalism is an ideology that upholds the government to intervene on social problems and ills of the worlds as well as to correct any economic irregularities that affect citizens (Roskin,2013). Communism is a political theory that was created by Karl Marx. It is a belief that everything is publicly owned by the society and everyone must work and contribute based on their ability to do so. A communist government is the belief that people can reach economic equality
In The United States of America there are two prominent forms of political ideologies which is conservatism and liberalism. Conservatism beliefs revolve around limited governments, free markets, personal responsibility, a strong national defense and traditional American beliefs. People who identify as being a liberal believe in achieving equal rights as well as opportunities for all American citizens. Liberals believe that it is the government's responsibility to protect human rights. Liberals and Conservatives clash on many relevant topics in America that still yet to have come to a conclusion.
The Republican elites have certainly surrendered to their nominee. They enjoy citing the “lesser of two evils”, in which the problems that Trump brings to the table are not as serious as the certain destruction that Hillary would bring if she was elected. Another emerging sentiment is that conservatism, in its current ideological form, is no longer relevant in modern political discourse. Traditional Reagan-era conservatism had its day, and it failed, so why not a new strategy, led by a potential despot who is at least promising to attack the status-quo.
Right realism takes the view that small government is better than a larger one. In addition, it considers crime, deviance, and the full perspective of it from a political conservatisms view. Right realism tends to take a more realistic view of crime and how it is caused. They also believe that crime and deviance as an issue within society and creates real social problems that will require practical solutions. Many people view right realism as an immoral agency that prefer to sway people act and think in their views by creating moral panics.
In the search for new ways to obtain power and wealth over several populations, we find that Spaniards earnestly and outrageously appealed to invade civilizations. However, colonial legacy was still an issue among the political struggles taking place back then, in which it’s possible to find two outstanding political parties: Conservatism and liberalism.
