Social control theory and social learning theory are two theories that suggest why deviant behavior is chosen to be acted upon by some individuals and not others. Both take a different stance on the issue. Social control theory suggests people’s behavior is based on their bonds to society, if they have strong bonds to society they conform and if not they have a tendency to act out or become involved in criminal or deviant behavior. There are roughly 800,000 people living within the United States that is under the protection of an executive order during the Obama administration called Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. These children, commonly referred to as “Dreamers,” have grown up in the United States. They attended elementary school here, many graduated high school here, and many went on to become successful adults living in the United States, but as of September 5th, 2017 the DACA program was shut down by the Trump administration, pending a trial in Congress. This means that those hundreds of thousands of individuals living under the DACA arm will no longer be legal residents in the United States.

Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory describes the process through which people acquire new info, forms of behavior, or attitudes from others firsthand or vicariously. The likelihood of a behavior presenting itself will rely on the amount of reinforcement it receives and the value that the individual associates to it. While some behavior may be rewarded, others may produce unfavorable responses. An individual will learn from the consequences of these actions and when a similar situation arises, they will alter their behavior according to what was most successful in the past.

Fruitvale Station, a movie based on a real story in Northern California, depicts the life of 22-year-old Oscar Grant. Oscar was a compassionate father who accomplished whatever he could to provide for his daughter, but unfortunately was killed by a police officer at the train station on New Year’s Eve. The film does a good job on displaying how family oriented Oscar was despite his impoverished background. The problem is this movie precipitates hatred between minorities and law enforcement. Especially since the release of the movie was only months after the murder of Trayvon Martin. Entertainment is another form of media that influences our emotions, opinions, and logical thinking. Social learning theory, developed by Bandura, discusses how people learn from one another through observation, modeling, and imitation bridging an individual’s attention, memory and motivation. Social learning theory identifies the importance of cognition, observable behavior, individual self-efficacy, and the extent of how the events surrounding an individual affect them; their locus of control. Social learning theory also looks at individual problem behavior being influenced by positive or negative reinforcement (Ashford & LeCroy, 2012).

Fruitvale Station provides insights into the modern homeland security policy because towards the resolution of the film there is racial profiling. Also, in regards to the homeland security policy, race-based criminal profiling had become a denounced law enforcement practice (Newman). “In 1999, a Gallup poll revealed that more than 80% of Americans disapproved of the practice of racial profiling by law enforcement authorities on any level” (Newman). In Fruitvale Station there is a detachment between the community and the law enforcement because the community is aware of the racial profiling that the law enforcement uses in order to obtain suspects. As a result, Oscar Grant and his associates were not cooperative with the law enforcement on New Year’s Day in 2009 because of this detachment the community has with the law enforcement.

New Year’s Day, 2009, a man is brutally shot by the BART Police of Oakland, California. Fruitvale Station, written and directed by Ryan Coogler, took audiences by surprise as it resonated with twenty-two year old Oscar Grant, a man who was shot down by the BART Police. This movie takes viewers on an emotional expedition as it takes a peek into the life and death of Oscar Grant and his family. The struggles of originating from an African-American background become apparent as Oscar Grant struggles with steering away from racial stereotypes and the misunderstandings of racial profiling.

Theoretically significant to conflict is social identity theory. It allows “predictions to incorporate who is likely to perceive and act in group terms, to remain committed to the group in times of crisis” Turner (1999), Doosje & Ellemers, (1999). Bar-Tal stresses conflict exists when an incompatible goal exists between two groups. The question of when incompatibility sets become important in understanding the cause of inter-ethnic or communal conflicts for instance, even more importantly; conflict within ingroup. Fruitvale station, is a story about the real life Oscar Grant, a black man who was shot and killed by a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer in Oakland. This film follows Grant and his last days before the shooting on New Year’s Day. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Fruitvale station was his first feature film. Coogler expressed that he was interested in making this film because he wanted people to get to know Grant, get attached, so that when a situation like this occurs again, people will care more about that human life (Wikipedia). In addition, the cast includes Michael B. Jordan (Grant), Octavia Spencer (Wanda Johnson), and Melonie Diaz (Sophina Mesa), amongst a few others. However, there is an underlying concept in this film. This film relates back to Double Consciousness and the internal conflict and struggles within African American men.

The Social Learning Theory and Conflict Perspective are both shown in the public depiction of this family. The social learning theory explains socialization through the individuals learning process and its effect on development of the self as well as influence of society in socializing individuals. The Kardashians and their children, especially the youngest two have grown up on this show having the world view their every decision and action. Currently, social bond and social learning theory are two of the leading theories in the criminological world. Between these two theories there are a variety of differences and similarities. In addition to these theories Gottfredson and Hirschi have published a book where they use the concept of self control to describe crime. Analyzing these three theories can be important to understanding the current criminological world.

Personal benefits are important to take into consideration because people need to understand the valuable changes that they are making, the new person that they are becoming. Recovery will change a person if they want to be changed. Family members will get their mothers/fathers back, parents will get their children back; forgive but never forget because they can always become the person that they once were. The reasons to thinking about life after recovery refers back to the beginning when they’re asked why they wanted to go through recovery in the first place. All of those reasons that they started, will be a reality for most people. If they put in one hundred percent of their efforts, the benefits of their recovery will be outstanding.

The conflict paradigm argues that society is a competition, it focuses of the distribution of wealth, power, and inequality between classes. Karl Marx believed that the elite did whatever they could to make sure they stayed in power. Following the conflict theory, one could argue that the student dropped out of college to start selling drugs, the because they believed that college was a part of the elite trying to get money and manipulating the everyday person to go to college to continue the cycle. The social learning theory looks at an individuals learning process and the influence society has on the socialization of an individual. A sociologist using the social learning could argue that the student dropped out of school to sell drugs

Akers and Sellers (2013) has stated that social learning theory is an expanded theory of differential association processes and improves it with differential reinforcement and other principles of the behavior theory. They added classical conditioning (the sharpening of involuntary reflex behavior); discriminative stimuli (internal stimuli that lead to signals for behavior); schedules of reinforcement (rewards and punishment ratio following behavioral feedback); and other theories of behavior (Akers & Sellers, 2013).

The conflict theory approach emphasizes issues of inequality and change in relation to social class, money, race ethnicity and gender. The conflict theory pinpoints the belief that these social classifications are parasitic: only benefiting one group while negatively affecting another. In particular, the social conflict approach focuses on the struggles that lower-class people face in a world where the rich and powerful benefits at their expense. Persons of the lower-class are often disadvantaged, since they are not given a chance to move ahead and are always stuck at the bottom of the social ladder. Upper-class individuals are able to fully educate their children, and hence, their generation will always be rich and powerful. However, a weakness
