There is very little more likely to spark a debate than the campus carry laws that will go into effect the beginning of August. A lot of the arguments on both sides of the spectrum have points that need to be raised; however, guns on campus are a bad idea. A logical appeal to the senses of a concealed handgun carrier may not be enough to convince them a school is not the place for guns. When logic is not enough, empirical confirmation through ethos may be the best option. Statistics, good sources, and experiments are all forms of ethos. Ethos establishes the speaker and provides them with a strong foundation for a belief or set of ideas. Many concealed carry advocates try to use arbitrary sources. One man has even argued that with an increase in concealed handguns, there will be an economic boost. Upon requesting a citation for a claim, the argument was withdrawn. Any argument based in emotions and not empirical evidence or statistic is weak. The foundation of emotional arguments is fear. The fear of a gunman or other type of attacker is why a lot of concealed hand gun license holders feel the need to have a weapon. In a similar fashion, supporters of campus carry argue that the reason behind an opposition to the policy is fear as well. Both sides of the argument use pathos at an unnecessary rate.
Students and staff with guns are not only a danger to other people, intentions malicious or not, but also to themselves. Students under high stress and emotional distress in general do not need to be around tools that can cause so much harm with so little effort. This argument, with the resounding knowledge of the high use of mind altering drugs on college campuses, mixed with the statistics surrounding the unhealthy psyche of students should be enough to show that campus carry is a bad
