Comparison of Two Versions of Cinderella: Grimm vs. Perrault

Have you ever wondered if there were other versions of Cinderella? Well there are, there isn’t just one version of Cinderella. Each version is a little bit different from each story because of the culture behind it. For example the “Cinderella” we know and love and the Ireland version the “Cinderlad”.The two cinderella stories, “Cinderlad” the Irish version and “Cinderella” the French version have both differences and similarities. Using the Motif “Damsel in distress” I can show that they are different & similar because of the culture they originated from and their social necessities.

Perrault’s version is the most well-known, for the glass slippers and pumpkin carriage. And the one with the most modern interpretations. While the Brother Grimm’s version reads more like a short horror story than a children 's fairytale. My version is a combination of both. Mostly based on Perrault yet I’ve incorporated some of the active personality of the Grimm 's protagonist besides to some violent elements which gives it a Grimm’s vibe. While researching my fairy tale I was taken back to the time when I’d read the tale, recalling how I didn’t question her submissive nature. I accepted that it should be this way and although my eyes would become teary, the younger version of me couldn’t see any way out of the situation other than marrying the prince.I have completely reimagined Cinderella.

The Disney version of the story, Cinderella, illustrates a different moral than that of the original story. This story believes an ideal child should do what they are told and follow directions and in the end they will reap the rewards. In this story, Cinderella’s mother dies and her father remarries to a woman who has two daughters. While the daughters are pampered, Cinderella must work to keep the house from falling into disrepair. She befriends the animals and they help her to get ready to go to the ball by finishing her chores and making her a dress. When the evil stepsisters discover the dress they become furious because the mice used trimming from their clothing when making the dress. In revenge, the stepsisters rip the dress, leaving Cinderella out of options and out of hope. Just as Cinderella is about to give up, her fairy godmother appears and with a wave of magic creates a dress and turns a pumpkin and the mice into a horse and carriage. In the Disney tale, her father is depicted as a loving and caring man whose most sacred is his daughter Cinderella. In Grimm’s version the two stepsisters are not ugly but actually beautiful with evil inside them. The step-sisters continuously abuse and mistreat Cinderella and her father doesn’t die but instead turns a blind eye to the situation and lets it continue. As the story continues it is clear that Cinderella’s father abandons her.

The first difference between the Perrault’s and the Lee’s version of Cinderella is that the mother was dead when the story begins but in the Lee version, the mother was alive at the beginning of the story. The story starts at once upon a time in the Perrault’s version, but the Lee’s version started the story off as 200 hundred years ago. Another difference is that the stepmother was friendly and nice in the lee version of Cinderella but in the Perrault version, the stepmother was cruel and wicked. In the Perrault version, the step sisters had a strong temper like their mother’s and wasn’t as beautiful as Cinderella but in the Lee’s Cinderella story, the stepsisters were extremely nice and sweet. The Protagonist Disposition in the Perrault version was very kind and sweet, and even to her stepsisters but in the lee’s version, the Protagonist Disposition is evil and rude. While getting ready for the ball in the Perrault version, the Cinderella is helped by a fairy godmother that was sent to her and in the Lee’s version, Cinderella was helped by the Satanas. Cinderella forgives her stepsisters and marries them off to wealthy noblemen in the Perrault version but in the Lee’s version, Cinderella sent them to get attacked by the villains who eventually took over the city. The last difference between Perrault’s and Lee’s version of Cinderella, is that the Cinderella shoes were glass in Perrault’s story but in Lee’s story, Cinderella shoes were glass slippers, but they could change shape and size, but the shoes could only fit on her.

The lengths that the stepsisters go to prevent Cinderella's happiness distinctly show and symbolize how far one will go in order to torment someone who they view as disfavored, impoverished, or "lesser than". They would rather be blind than see Cinderella rise up in social rank before they do. In the movie, Cinderella isn't allowed to sit at the table with her stepmom and stepsisters to have her meals, she is forced out of her bedroom and into the attic, and she is only fed table scraps. All of these abuses towards her sparks a response from the reader to pity her. It is a knee jerk reaction to sympathize with her situation. Here is a sweet, kindhearted young woman who has, in the Disney version, lost both of her parents and is now being treated like a servant. It is common for readers and viewers alike to root for the good, kind hearted character to come out victorious against the evil antagonist.

The story of Cinderella has become a classic fairy tale, known around the world, and past down from generation to generation. Yet, over the years, the story has been rewritten to better relate to different cultures. While some things never change, authors still manage to convey different messages by making the story their own. This can be clearly seen when the Grimm brothers version of Cinderella is compared to Charles Perrault’s version of Cinderella. While the core of the story does not change, the moral, tone, and “magical” aspects of the two stories are clearly shaped by the different cultures in which they were written in.

Cinderella held on to what her mother had told her and put up with everything her step- family was making her do. Cinderella always did what she was supposed to do, not once did she stop short of finishing or try to fight back. Cinderella kept her faith and believed that what her mother had told her was the truth and that life would get better. Eventually life did get better. By keeping her faith Cinderella was able to get all her chores done and get dressed for the ball, with the help from some creatures. If Cinderella wouldn’t have kept her faith she wouldn’t have dance with the prince and the prince wouldn’t have fallen in love with her. Cinderella wasn’t self-centered and believed if she was a good person she would be rewarded and in the end, she was able to live happily ever after with her prince. The exact opposite can be said about the step-sisters. The two sisters were awful people telling Cinderella to do their dirty work. When the prince came looking for the owner of the shoe the two girls would have done anything to fit the shoe. Anything is exactly what they did, one sister cut off her toe and another cut off her heel. The girls “hearts were foul and black” (Grimm 117), because of this they couldn’t have a truly happy life.
