Coming of Age Research Paper As people grow older, their perspectives can change based on several different aspects. Family, friends, and experience are all factors that can change the perspectives of a person. One perspective that can change quite often is politics. As people grasp new thoughts and ideas their perspectives can alter. People may not recognize it but everything they learn can go into the way they view their oncoming perspectives. Coming-of-age involves recognizing different perspectives. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird Scout is an example of a character whose coming-of-age process involves gaining a different perspective. Dobbs explains coming-of-age by describing the scientific background to maturing. … After teens are introduced to other people’s perspectives, their views can be modified or altered: “At some level and at sometimes (and it’s the parent’s to spot when), the teen recognizes that the parent can offer certain kernels of wisdom -- knowledge valued not because it comes from parental authority but because it comes from the parent’s own struggles to learn how the world turns” (Dobbs). Learning other people’s outlooks will extend a teenagers perspective on many different aspects, especially parents because even though teens will not admit it, they respect their parents more than anyone else in the world. Also, once teens realize that there have been people who have been in the same situations they are in, they can worry less about the present and focus on the future. Putting two heads together can lead to great accomplishments; that is why teens look toward their peers for helpful advice about success: teens gravitate toward peers for another, more powerful reasons: to invest in the future rather than the past” (Dobbs). There is no one greater or more important to me than my mom. She has taught me so many of the qualities that I possess. She has also given me many new ways to look at life. There is so much to say about her, mostly good qualities of course. She has been through so many hardships. I only know of a few because she usually does not tell us about what is going on. This way my brothers and I will not worry. Each of these many hardships has not only made her stronger, but also our family. The beginning of our journey started in first grade when my parents got divorced. It was obviously a pretty hard time for us because of all the stress it put on my mom. Just like any other divorce there was a custody battle, but really it was not much of a battle considering my dad really was not into the idea of having full custody. He was interested in the money. My mom on the other hand was the complete opposite. She gave up all the expenses that my dad should have paid just to guarantee her full custody. She gave up everything to make sure my brothers and I got to stay with her. That is something that I will never forget. Since then, we have been struggling financially and living paycheck-to-paycheck. Unfortunately, her degree in social services does not offer many job opportunities.
