The movie I've chosen to display the "Coming of Age" theme is Beauty & the Beast; a classic Disney tale whose story revolves around a young, middle-class book worm named Belle, and a conceited prince-turned-monster who is only ever referred to as "Beast". I believe this movie perfectly fits into the 'Coming of Age' model as both of its main characters experience drastic life changes, which turn out to be valuable learning experiences in the end. On Belle's side of things, a series of unfortunate events in relation to her father wind her up a prisoner for life to, you guessed it, the Beast. In her so-called 'imprisonment', Belle captivates the heart of the Beast, along with the other inhabitants of his castle, and becomes independent as a result of her deficient parental unit. …show more content…
Sometimes spending time alone, and away from the ordinary is the best form of emotional therapy. Moving onto Belle's costar, the Beast, viewers of the film cannot help but see the drastic character development which occurs. Right from the beginning, the Beast is spoken of very poorly, as a result of his self-righteous attitude toward the world. Due to his unkind behaviour, a witch casts a spell on him, which morphs him into his monstrous form. His human form would be his to hold again, as long as he could change his ways, and have someone fall in love with him. The Beast wastes no time in throwing a fit, and eventually disappears into despair; however, once Belle enters his life, the disgruntled prince makes an effort to change his ways, if only to earn her affections. Both Belle and the Beast learn from one another, which I think makes their relationship that much more meaningful. Not only do they fall in love, but they truly care for the development of one another, and are determined to change themselves for the better in order to be
In Josh Barro’s article, he mainly discusses the theme of Social Security. He explains how if we raise the age for people to access Social Security, that will harm poorer Americans who have a lower life expectancy due to the type of work they do or because of lack of other proper benefits. In the video, Coming of Age in and Aging America, they discuss the main theme of aging in America and the difficulties and obstacles these individuals face on a daily basis, especially in terms of Social Security. The video covers a variety of situations that the elderly face and how America can work to make the lives easier especially in a world where our elderly population in growing. One example was in a hospital where they were able to integrate new techniques and systems to make it easier for people to work longer into their lives. The main themes of Sharon Kaufman’s journal article were health care and the reform of current plans, and discussion of life-prolonging procedures. She discusses the three main procedures used in the U.S. which are organ transplantation, cardiac procedures, and cancer treatments. Finally, Segal’s text covers the themes and policies related to aging and elderly population. She discusses the acts and programs that have been put into place such as the Older Americans Act of 1965, social security, pensions, and Medicare/Medicaid, along with a variety of others.
Childhood is a time where children learn about the world around themselves. They see and experience many factors that influence their everyday lives, which help them grow stronger when they become adults. In 'Girl'; by Jamaica Kincaid and 'The Lesson'; by Toni Cade Bambara the characters within the stories learn valuable lesson with help them grow to become better individuals. In 'The Lesson'; the character of Sugar undergoes a realization that society does not treat everyone equally, that not every individual has the same opportunity and equality that they should have. In 'Girl'; the main character learns that she must be perceived as a woman and not as a slut, her mother brings to her
In the novel “A Long Way Gone”, there are endless amounts of evidence to be found explaining why this novel is a “coming of age” novel. So, what exactly is “coming of age”? Typically, this is a story that is made up of three different factors: young characters who experience a crisis, absent or negative adult relations, and the incorporation of an epiphany moment. The story of Ishmael Beah could not be an any greater representation of this category of story, because at 12 years old there is no peace that could be described in his childhood simply because peace was absent.
In Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Belle is misunderstood, kind, and perceptive. Belle is shown to be misunderstood when she is walking through the streets, reading her book. The other townspeople remark, “that girl is strange, no question” (Beauty and the Beast). With the simple act of reading a book, the townspeople are quick to cast her out. At no point do any of the townspeople learn more about her to fully understand her. Even though she is misunderstood, Belle is also kind. After being taken prisoner at the castle, she helps the beast relearn several basic life skills, like how to use utensils and how to read. After reading him Romeo and Juliet, Beast makes the request that she read it again. She turns it back on him and asks him to read. When he hesitates, she realizes that he has forgotten how, and she says, “Here, let me help you” (Beauty and the Beast). Through helping him instead of questioning or taunting him, she shows the kind and
Seger states that in fairy tales "an old woman, a dwarf, a witch, or a wizard helps the hero . . . The hero achieves the goal because of this help, and because the hero is receptive to what this person has to give" (173). Conversely, Beast is helped by the very damsel he imprisons. Belle is a normal woman, not a witch or a wizard; she has no special powers and is not old or dwarfish in any way. Also, Beast is extremely reluctant to accept any help from her. In the Disney version of the story, Belle tries to teach Beast how to control his temper and be more compassionate and loving. Beast is not receptive at all to this help throughout the story, but still manages to defeat the curse left on him by a self revelation. He decides after Belle's departure from his castle to learn to love and be kindhearted. Although her help may have had an impact on his transformation, it was the mere presence of her and his own self conscience that ultimately helped him conquer his relentless curse. This is quite different from what Seger illustrates in her hero myth theory.
She starts crying and accepts his proposal if he just stays with her, “Alas! I thought I had only a friendship for you, but the grief I now feel convinces me, that I cannot live without you.”(Beaumont). Then the beast is transformed into a handsome prince and they live happily ever after. The Disney version starts with a spoiled, selfish and unkind prince is transformed into a hideous beast by a misleading and beautiful enchantress, “She warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within.”(Beauty And The Beast 1991). If he cannot learn to love another and earn her love also before his 21st birthday the spell will never be broken and he is doomed to remain a beast for the rest of his life. A few years after the spell was placed on him Belle’s father gets lost in the woods near the beast´s castle and he is chased by wolves into the castle to get shelter, where he is captured by the beast and is thrown into the dungeon for being a trespasser. While the father is imprisoned by the beast, Belle is in the village being harassed by the village strongman Gaston who asks her frequently to marry him. Belle soon starts to worry about her father and ends up finding him in the castle where she trades him places. When the beast finally gets her to warm up to him Belle’s father is sick, and he allows her to go save
Referring back to fairytales like Beauty and the Beast film which involves the beast who magically got turned into a beast as a disciplining act because of his selfishness. Then a beautiful young women by the name of Belle, got imprisoned in the castle. The beast is very fond of Belle since he first laid eyes on her. During the movie Belle being the catalyst for the Beast’s need of wanting to change. But he distances himself from her because he has two mindsets. Which is a man and the other is a raging beast. The beast is going through trying to
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast deprive Belle of her independence, freedom, and self worth. As opposed to the men in Disney’s version of the story, Belle is portrayed as demure and civilized. Beast is of course a Beast, but Gaston is downright beastly with a thin veneer of good looks. The main reason Beauty and the Beast was such a favorite of mine, was that Belle seemed to be in charge of her own life, she chose to be studious and not vain, she chose to rescue her father and go to the beast, she chose each aspect of her life, but it is Beast who progresses from an errant and temperamental child to a respectful Prince. Despite having independence (however limited) the story no longer is her story. She is the supporting character in the story of first the father, then Gaston and finally the
The Disney movie that has been chosen for my analysis is Beauty and the Beast, which is about the love story between a beast and a beautiful girl. The girl in the movie Belle is an ordinary and poor girl who becomes a princess when she falls in love with the beast in the film who actually is a prince in real, but a magic spell cast over him turns him into a beast. Belle who lives in a small town is shown to be a beautiful, skilled, brave and a very caring girl. Belle is basically a nerdy introvert girl who keeps to her herself and lives with her father. She loves reading as it is shown in the movie that when she goes to the castle of the beast she wishes that she had a library this big for her to sit in and read all day long.
Belle was kind to the Beast, and then she found her prince. It took courage to look into the eyes of someone that took away everything and see the good.
“Beauty and the Beast”, created by Walt Disney, is a movie for all ages that demonstrates many life lessons such as, the past doesn't define us, look beyond what you can see, and inner beauty is superior than outer beauty. These lessons are important to learn from, since many can benefit individuals through contrasting situations. Many of Walt Disney movies are rated G, therefore creating a movie for all ages.
Belle’s distinct personality traits help her see the greatness in the Beast that lead to him becoming the man he always secretly was. Belle during this film can be seen as the kindest person in
Both Belle and the Beast undergo it, catalyzed by one another. At first for the Beast, Bella is the only one who both is willing to stand up to him and a reminder to him of his weaknesses and failures. Although some young adults prefer horror movies like the remake of Stephen King’s It or the crude, live action humor like Marvel’s Deadpool, there were many people who like family-friendly movies like the Beauty and the Beast. Statistically,
Twenty-six years ago, children were mystified by the story of a bookworm girl and her journey that found her true love. Beauty and the Beast captured the hearts of many and grew into a staple Disney movie. It follows Belle—a beautiful, but misunderstood young adult. After she found her way to a fantastical castle, her world changed completely. The original movie caused many children and adults to connect and find themselves within the characters. Consequently, they decided to make a live action version of the film a quarter of a century later. Bill Condon, the director of the 2017 film, added dimension to the characters by further explaining their backgrounds. Facts about Belle’s mom and the Beast’s family brought new sides that the 1991 movie did not bring, but the movie was able to keep its original family feel. The live action Beauty and the Beast is an excellent example of the family film genre because of its lessons, range of inner genres, and wholesome experience.
