Avoiding the Problem A coming-of-age story revolves around the growth of the protagonist from their youth to their adulthood. It usually consists of mental growth and coming to terms with one’s identity. The book Voyage in the Dark by Jean Rhys to some extent incorporates these themes into the book. The book focuses on the protagonist Anna as she tries to discover herself and fit in. The story is not like a typical coming-of-age tale since it does not have the protagonist engaging against her problems head on and does not change for the better. One can argue that she tried her best considering her circumstances of being new to England; however, Anna does not attempt to solve her problems as seen with her worries about appearances, the failed …show more content…
Her landladies would often quickly discriminate against her and come to the conclusion that she is a prostitute. One of the land ladies even said, “Showing yourself at my sitting-room window ’alf-naked like that” (Rhys 8). The landlady merely based her on her appearance and in this way it is arguable that Anna could not do anything to solve her relationship with the landlady since the landlady is already being rude to her and at that point Anna is not at fault considering she is not a prostitute yet. However, Anna does not attempt to resolve the situation and continues to make it worse by the way she acts. An example includes how she acts sick and makes the landladies care for her while she is “sick”. She also eventually starts to become a prostitute by bringing home men and staying out late. This causes her to get kicked out several times as she is forced to move from place to place. She is essentially homeless and it makes her feel as if she is constantly being judged by others especially when each landlady talks behind her back. Everywhere she goes there is a lack of a sense of family and she is at fault for this since she acts out. As a teenager going from youth to adulthood, she should begin to understand the responsibility of her actions, but she never comes to understand the
Childhood is a time where children learn about the world around themselves. They see and experience many factors that influence their everyday lives, which help them grow stronger when they become adults. In 'Girl'; by Jamaica Kincaid and 'The Lesson'; by Toni Cade Bambara the characters within the stories learn valuable lesson with help them grow to become better individuals. In 'The Lesson'; the character of Sugar undergoes a realization that society does not treat everyone equally, that not every individual has the same opportunity and equality that they should have. In 'Girl'; the main character learns that she must be perceived as a woman and not as a slut, her mother brings to her
Anna herself comes to realise this in a non-egotistical way and says that she is a ‘woman who has faced more terrors than many warriors’. Opening in 1665, Brooks begins to outline the events of the plague year that enabled Anna to ‘shine’ and become the young woman who has faced the terrors of the mob, midwifery and mining. Instead of joining the grieving mob who attacked Mem and Anys Gowdie, the town healers, accusing them of being witches and blaming them for their losses to the plague, Anna fights with all her strength to bring the crowd to their senses. With her own ‘babies. rotting in the ground’ she too could have given in to the superstitions of her time and sought revenge by blaming the ‘witches’ but she chose the harder but more reasonable way and was bruised and battered for having done
While not a complete victory for Anna, the battle for her inheritance was not a complete loss either. She capably fought her father and even the entire city council of Hall. This was no easy task because she couldn’t represent herself in court. It was one of the first times where the moral code of Germany was overturned. She contested her father and went against the respect you’re supposed to have. Her story was not a complete positive statement of female dominance, because that certainly was not the case, an ugly thirty-year court battle doesn’t indicate disempowerment either, even though her battle didn’t personally benefit her to the fullest, it was a large step for women.
In coming of age stories, the protagonists often experience a pensive and dramatic moment where either they break through to adulthood or retreat to childhood - it is this moment that unveils the magnitude of growing up for the reader.
Rituals around the world all teach valuable lessons that help initiates see the value and importance of life. Each culture has different rituals that provide experiences for their youth to learn these valuable lessons of life. Many coming of age rituals are intense procedures. The Amazon's Satere Mawé youth enter adulthood through the bullet-ant glove initiation, teaching courage and endurance, and the crocodile scaring ritual that the men from the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea participate in teaches them pain and accomplishment.
Anna also undertakes a spiritual journey over the course of the book. Her learning of the villages’ Rector, Michael Mompellion’s true thoughts near the novels end, as well as her realisations on the nature of some of the other villagers causes her to question her Christian faith and its restrictions it places on her in the society she lives in. This can be seen in her accepting view of the Muslim faith in the epilogue.
We are first introduced to Anna, a thin woman with short dark hair, in her dialogue with her father where it quickly becomes apparent that they already have a difference in opinion on love, marriage and what she should wear on a yacht. “that guy will never marry you my darling daughter” to which Anna replies “so far, I’ve been the one who doesn’t want to marry him” “it’s the same difference” her father disagrees (Antonioni. 3:45 – 3:55). Although this is a short glimpse into Anna’s character we can see that she resists these social standards and almost seems annoyed by them. Anna is seemingly the most self- aware of the characters but seems to be stuck in a position where she is unsure of how everyone else will react to her true
The puritans would disapprove the book Get Well Soon because of the disrespects towards authority. The events to lead Anna where she is in the novel is because she would run away from home. When she ran away, she would try to go to her Grandparents house. When Anna’s parents would tell her couldn’t go somewhere she would end up sneaking out the house with her friends or to meet with her friends. In the hospital there is a golden rule, the rule is that you are not allowed to have relationships with anyone in the amount of time they are in the facility. Anna can’t help herself but to
Anna finds herself bonding with people despite the harsh living conditions and weather, which quickly woke them
The “coming of age” experience is a melting pot of emotions. Each individual experiences their own set of varying emotions that come to life when a person reaches a tender age when these changes occur, whether physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual. It is the age in which the question of identity arises as the person begins to formulate who he or she would be. It is also the age in which a person is mistaken on who they are. This short period is significant as the person explores who they are as a person through experiencing turbulent circumstances in life.
Toni Morrison’s coming of age novel Sula takes place in a patriarchal society. In patriarchal societies, men usually run the society and women usually follow the men, which allows the women to start to define themselves by the men in the society. When the men leave, the women have a hard time finding themselves and facing the reality of who they are. This is very difficult for the characters in the novel because they live in a small town so the character must accept who they are while also accepting the negative feedback from the towns people.
Jessica. Valdovinos Pd.05 Coming Of Age Coming of age can be a difficult time period for young teens. This can be considered as a big step, going from childhood to adulthood. Coming of age is when teens start to develope and grow to more expectations and responsibilities.
Dmitri sees Anna as a young and ignorant girl who does not have enough life experience to say no to a man like him. Due to her age, Dmitri thought that she acted this way towards him because she was simple-minded. Despite Anna breaks
Middle adulthood is a complex time period that requires a multidimensional outlook to understand all of the processes and changes that are taking place. The many changes during middle adulthood include physical, cognitive and social differences. Many of these changes create significant stress and it is important to understand ways of coping with the anxiety. Many of these coping mechanisms include mindfulness and cultivating a sense of self-efficacy and mastery (pg. 482). There are many changes during middle adulthood that may require stress management techniques and interventions.
