Imagine somebody having just graduated from high school, and they are trying to get into a college, but they don’t have to much say as to which college they go to because many students cannot afford to go to a nice college let alone a “cheap” college. For some people it’s harder to imagine, but for others that is the life that they are living right now. According to the College Board of Education tuition has increased by 8.6% since 2012, meanwhile average household incomes have only increased by 2.23%. The following tuition increase trend is becoming a serious threat to American society, and must be slowed down. At this rate families will soon have no hope of ever paying for college debt. Many people want to blame the government to contributing greatly to the recent increase in tuition by saying there used to be a plethora of public funding opportunities for colleges, but that they were then all slashed. Even though this may seem like a good thing, this too has its own cons. With the rising amount of money given out in financial aid colleges are making less net revenue which is making it hard to fund better educational avenues for students. Colleges are also giving some students in need a discounted price for tuition, and it has increased to almost 48.6% of freshman who receive these discounts (Redd, Upper Limits). This leads to even more struggle for colleges to meet demands. Small and mid-size colleges are having the most difficult time with this trend, their net revenue is having trouble increasing proportionally to their student increase.
