College is a time to figure out who you are and what you want to do with your life. The important thing to remember is that whatever major you choose right now, you can always change your mind and do something else. As a matter of fact, a majority of the students that go to college end up changing their major within the first year. For me, in the beginning of the semester, I wanted to choose classes that would be interesting and also help me in the future to further my education. I thought that a psychology course in human growth and development would be helpful for my major. Right now my major is nursing and this course will go a long way in helping me prepare for my career. Human growth and development is the study of the lifespan from birth to death with an understanding of physical, behavioral and emotional growth. I was excited to take the course because I’ve taken other psychology courses and found them interesting. I thought it would be nice to continue my education in psychology and learn more about human health. Although I didn’t know what to expect with the material in this class, I was ready for the challenge and excited to learn more about …show more content…
I’ve learned new things I’ve never thought about before, but the details really do make sense. I’ve just never put the two things together to make complete sense. Human development will give you a different viewpoint on life because you’ll be able to communicate better with others, reach people on an emotional level and even develop better relationships with people of all ages. Children are a big part of development and understanding how they grow and do what they do will better prepare you for having children. I have a better source of knowledge about all life stages and really understand what people are going through because I know what developmental issues they may be having. Knowing what others are going through, I’ll have a greater appreciation and compassion for them. In any field of work, its important to have compassion for others and understand what may be wrong with them if they’re having problems. There are many ways that development can affect your view points on certain people. I have a better understanding of myself with the age process associated with growing older and also children. Children are a unique category all by themselves, but with a psychology course, there is a deeper understanding of kids physical, emotional and cognitive abilities. In a way, this can help you connect with children better and know how to interact with
You also expect to be able to accomplish your work quickly and with minimal stress, leaving more time to work and spend with your family. You expect to be able to do what you did in high school and still pass. However college, by far, is nowhere as easy as most anticipate. You have to study, unlike high school, where you could float on by with A's by seldomly attending class. College is harder than high school and therefore

The book The Prince of Los Cocuyos can relate to my transition into college. The first time Richard Blanco came to America and felt out of place. College is all about experinces and getting to know yourself and learning who you really are. It is hard leaving high school and having to transition to college. Being used to teachers reminding you about assingments to now going online and having to remind yourself. As I begin to start my college experience I thought college would be easier no one telling you what you can and cant do, but its really not easier it might honestly be harder. Having to do so many assignments all at once. I feel like college is all about self motivation and being able to push yourself to work hard. Which I actually am
College is like a steeping stone to becoming a responsible adult because for the first time most people are practically on their own. It is completely different from high school in that not only that school has to be dealt with, but you have to juggle your personal time and financial state as well. They go away to college and face circumstances that they would most likely come across when they finally do go on their own. Bills have to be paid, time has to be managed efficiently, and deadlines have to be met, just like in the "real world."
Many students are so overjoyed to fly the coop and go off to college that they have a hard time remembering that all education, not only college can be very challenging therefore “let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”(Galatians 6:9) . The shock of it all can cause very negative reactions on people of all ages from partying all the way to simply procrastinating. Excitement is an amazing feeling but keeping it at bay can be a serious challenge.
Colombo explains that “Beginning college can be disconcerting experience” (Colombo, p.1). That there will be more peer pressure from your peers and an increase expectations that you have never faced during your high
College is a chance to be free and is a bridge between the real world and school. I’m an adult and expected to behave as such; I make my own choices where I have to decide what is important to me. I have an opportunity to learn how the world works, to explore the limitless possibilities and a chance to admire how vast knowledge can be. College will change my life in the way that I can develop life skills outside academics, to be fully
Going to college allows for many opportunities to open up in life. Society is changing at a very rapid rate. College is a very difficult time for nearly everyone, as Charles Murray who published an article on should the Obama Generation Drop out also states that “A large majority of young people do not have the intellectual ability to do genuine college-level work” (95). Attending college is not for everyone, but It can teach you to learn how to become independent, develop discipline, evolve new life skills, and learn how to balance a social life versus student life. The experiences you obtain and gain from attending college can lead you to learn how to live your life within the college environment in a way that creates harmony with who you are. It is a time of trial and error until you find what works for you. Eventually harmony is found by choosing a major that coincides in a positive way with the person you are. Once this is found, you will be able to establish a system of studying and learning that works for how your mind works. It is natural that your life will be in disharmony when the circumstances in your life change dramatically, such as when you go to college, but your life should eventually return to being less stressful. During your college journey, you will make many friends. Many friendships that you make in college
Development psychology refers to the scientific study of the systematic psychological changes that normally occur to human beings throughout their growth period from birth to old age. It was originally concerned with children and infants, but it has since expanded to include the entire life span of mankind including adolescence and adulthood. Development psychology covers the extent to which human development occurs through gradual accumulation of knowledge, and the extent to which children born with inmate mental structures learn through experience. Several psychological theories and approaches like the behavioral, humanistic, psychoanalytic, biological, and cognitive approaches have been developed to explain the
Graduation is such an exciting time; however, there is a lot of preparation that goes into graduating from college. One has to decide exactly what career he or she would like to pursue in his or her field of study and expertise. How one uses that degree after college is up to an individual as well. Personally, I am going to use my degree to learn this business. I will not throw all of this hard work, late night studying, and financial expenses away without results. I will use my degree to further my education and training through various occupational experiences.
Going into college is like going into a foreign land. The student does not know many people, most likely will not know the area, and does not have much money. More so does not have any. A college student will do whatever it takes to save a penny, whether it is getting a part time job or even selling their fortunes on Ebay. Living on campus has many benefits just as living off campus. Looking at the cost, the community, and responsibilities the student will have to determined the best living that will fit your needs.
To begin, one good thing about college is it makes you want your goals more. By this I mean, the hard work that you put into college becomes drive to make you complete your goal. In other words, college is like a videogame and your goal is the princess. The harder you work on the levels to get to the princess the more you want her. So in other words. One example of this is my mother, when I was younger my mom decided to go back to college.
At some point, someone has said that high school will be the best four years of their lives and college gets even better. So with that idea in people’s heads, they come up with their ideal image of the college. They start planning the perfect scenario of what college they will go to and what their roommate will be like. They often try to compare an unrealistic image and turn it into a realistic image, but they are unlike in many ways. Once students step onto the college campus, they will soon face what it is actually like to be in college. When people understand that college is not the perfect movie scene, then they will take advantage of expanding and furthering their education seriously. Going to college is a whole different experience and there is a lot more to it such as the rigorous classes and overwhelming school work, being more independent, and forming new bonds with others.
Leading up into the class I was both bit nervous and excited, since this was the first time in years that I haven’t taken a class outside of my particular major. As I was going through the course schedule, I had in my mind that I did not just want to take any old class just because I need it to graduate. So I came across developmental psychology and thought to myself that this would be a good fit because I enjoy learning about other people. Once class started, I was a little confused about how it the class was going to be, since I already had the thought in my head that I was going to be learning about people older in age. After understanding more about what I was going to learn from this class, I became much more excited because this is actually affecting me in my personal life now, as my wife is pregnant and due in December. I thought this was a great pre baby learning experience for myself, since each week I had the ability to learn everything from development, prenatal development, physical development, intelligence, temperament and attachment, gender role development, and development of the family.
Understanding the biological development will help a person understand the physiological dimensions because they work together in understanding the human development. Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior. “Personality, self-concept, emotion, and cognition are parts of the human psychological development” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2010). The psycho-dynamic theory, Neo-Freudian psychoanalytic theory, phenomenological theory, and feminist theories are some
