Amy Fisher The overall functioning of a classroom is impacted by trust, safety, and consistency. When a student does not feel safe he or she will reflect this through his or her behavior. Trust is important for students to take risks and allow learning to occur in the classroom. Trust, safety, and consistency are beneficial in the learning environment. A classroom where students feel safe, realize the teacher is consistent, and trust is developed, will allow students to grow and change socially, emotionally, and academically. This will offer a positive learning environment. Establishing rapport with students is extremely important. Students should feel like a teacher genuinely cares about their well-being. Trust is an important component of the classroom learning environment. A student should respect and trust his or her teacher and the teacher should be respectful of his or her students and their families. This will encourage a nurturing learning environment and decrease behavioral problems in the classroom. When the teacher is consistently supporting the rules, and allowing the students to feel safe in the classroom, trust begins to develop. Teachers have to work to develop trust and respect in the classroom due to the fact that children in today’s world are often mistrusting because of society’s messages of the world being dangerous (world-view) as well as their own direct experiences (self-view) with abuse, violence, and neglect. Providing a safe and secure environment enables students to explore and participate in learning. Students will volunteer answers and ask questions when they feel safe. When students feel safe they are more willing to talk about themselves to others and the teacher. Establish relationships with your students and build a sense of community within your classroom. Students need to get to know each other as well as experience the “human” side of their teacher. This will allow for a safe and trusting classroom environment. A positive learning environment requires consistency within the classroom and by the teacher. Rules need to be established in the classroom. Students and teachers need to understand and agree upon the rules and procedures of the classroom.
A child needs to be able to feel safe in order to take risks and chances in the learning process. Without a positive school and classroom climate, students are likely to not fully engage in learning and thus he/she may not willing to volunteer or participate in activities in small or large group settings. This ultimately diminishes the cognitive learning potential for the student for the short and long term.
Safety: Students know that they are physically safe and that they are not in danger in the classroom. Safety also includes students emotional and mental well-being, meaning that they will be free from emotional damage such as bulling or name-calling.
Equally important is safe-guarding the learner from fear of physical or psychological harm, doing so facilitates how safe they feel within the learning environment and will lead to a pro-active learning environment that will allow the learner to succeed without fearing any risk of harm.
For students to thrive in the classroom, I must ensure that they have a positive space they can come to and feel comfortable. If students don’t feel safe in their classroom then learning will not happen. I must build a caring and supportive space for children so they can succeed and feel loved. This will help develop a sense of belonging to a school. I have to remember that it is not my classroom, it is the students! It is imperative that the students, parents, and coworkers in my school feel they can come to me for anything, especially as one of their
Making children feel safe in the classroom begins with my respect for the child, knowing their name, become familiar with their wants & needs as well as their family lifestyle and culture. By taking time to listen to their stories, embrace their joy and encourage their efforts I show them they are important to
One of my strengths is that I have a strong sense of a "clear commitment to uphold the principles that should govern a democratic and pluralistic community" (Goal 3). In the classes I teach I have been working on creating a classroom environment that is both safe and a positive learning environment. I created a class constitution during my first week of full immersion, and have been working with students to ensure that the expectations are being followed. For example, when students use disrespectful language in the classroom, I remind them about the class constitution. Furthermore, Juliet said that I have created a safe community where students feel
Teachers are less likely to have behavior problems when they build classroom communities because the students will have developed respect for their teacher and peers, therefore, limiting the likelihood a student causing disruptions that would distract or impact their peers in a negative manner. Students respect teachers who are, straightforward, honest, fair, and maintains control without being rude. It does not take long for students to become excited about learning. Students are eager to learn once they become members of a classroom community that offers encouragement, support, values learning and has successfully built and implemented strong community of learners. They are eager to keep their position within the classroom community, therefore, they will take the necessary steps to ensure they remain apart of the group. Social-contextual factors and personal issues are two of the most crucial components that affect student learning. Learning is a social process that needs both cultural and social factors addressed during the instructional process. This social aspect of learning also drives the determination to learn. Building classroom community can be used to
There are many tools that are essential to create a learning environment that is safe and inviting for all students. Some of the tools that are essential in a safe and inviting learning environment include classroom rituals, arts integration into the curriculum, and the transformation of school culture into the school family. These tools are just a few of many that can be used to create an effective learning
Emotional safety in the classroom is a vital element for students. If a student does not feel emotionally safe in the classroom his or her learning is greatly effected. I have learned this first hand this school year when my student got transferred to a different school within the district. On the first day at the new school her original learning support teacher was there to greet her. Being in a new environment was overwhelming for her, but having the familiarity of her learning support teacher for her original school and myself was reassuring to her. However, this teacher was only there for the morning of her first day, this made the afternoon more difficult. After reading the article Creating an Emotionally Safe Classroom, I realize this
As an educator, it is always beneficial in the workplace to be friendly and trusting. If you are not a trusting person, it will be tough to grow and move to a higher status. If you trust your co-workers and students, it helps to form bonds with each other.
Developing a positive relationship with students ensures a mutual respect is developed. Control trust and intimacy are viewed as core dimensions of interpersonal relationships. Students who perceived their teachers as exhibiting higher levels of ‘shared control, trust and intimacy reported greater learning’ (Dobransky & Frymier, 2004). Thus proving the importance of developing a positive relationship with students within the classroom.
Creating a safe and orderly environment that is conducive to learning. In schools where achievement is high, the schools are safe, orderly, and respectful. The school demands that students work hard and diligently, and the teachers and staff work hard to provide the students with moral
Therefore, if we help each individual release stress and tips for healthy brain development. We need to protect our brain from bad things, items, and chemicals because it can interfere with our brain development and health. There has been studies show that students learn better when they are in a secure environment. For example, Some schools have security guard that does wand searches, or the child will walk through metal detector. This makes the students feel safe at school. The question was asked, "how can schools build culture of trust and self -control with children from a disadvantage and unstable environment( Sarah Sparks). This is all a life skills and something that students will learn or can related to. One way we can build trust and self-control with student is being a good listener. Teachers and administrators would be so surprised to see how assertive students can be. For example, O' Malley states that she recalls students at high school who complained about the trash can piling up on campus. Therefore, the students raised money to buy more trash can and also they decorate the
When I think about my role as a teacher, one of the most important things I consider is the relationships I build with my students, parents, colleagues, and community members. In the classroom, I need to ensure that I create a safe, loving, and positive learning environment. In order to make all students feel welcome, I get to know their names, the correct pronunciation and spellings, learning their culture and background, and their
