Most people think of Christopher Columbus as the person who discovered the Americas. However, Leif Ericson, a Viking, was the first European to see the Americas. “Christopher Columbus - born Cristoforo Colombo but was called in Spain Cristobal Colon”(Heat-Moon 4) was born to Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa sometime between August 25 and October 31, 1451 in Italy near Genoa (Heat-Moon 4). “Christopher Columbus had four other siblings; Bartholomew Columbus, Bianchinetta Columbus, Giacomo Columbus, and Giovanni Pellegrino Columbus(Phillips 64). “Christopher spent some of his early years at his father’s trade of weaving and later he became a sailor on the Mediterranean [Sea]” (Christopher Columbus 2). “By the …show more content…

“[and] on Oct. 12 he landed on a small island (Walting Island) in the Bahamas”(Christopher Columbus 3). “Columbus assembled a landing party, which rowed to the beach in the Santa Maria’s Launch. Columbus carried the royal banner”(Phillips 155). Columbus lead to the discovery of the Americas which lead to the possibility to expand the overpopulated and crowded Europe.
Columbus made four different voyages to what the world now knows as America, he wanted to find a water route to China because there were many goods that the Europeans wanted, and Columbus colonized and expanded the territory of Europe.
Columbus’ contribution to the world is one that will affect the world for years and years. “Columbus grew up in a medieval world exhausted by war and bigotries, religious corruption and intolerance, a time of widespread spiritual dissolution and social pessimism, a continent deeply in need of a rebirth”(Heat-Moon 5). The era of which Columbus lived in was really in need of a make-over. The way people acted, their decisions, and their religion were not acceptable to any standard. That time period was very boring and depressing and it was difficult to be happy. There were so many wars that it was destroying the world. “Columbus’ crossing is the determining, the unique, event leading up to the greatest discovery in history”(Taviani 90). Without Columbus’ discovery, we wouldn’t have discovered the Americas until much later. England
