Whenever you imagine prison, you think up ideas and violent images that you have seen in the movies or on TV.   Outdated clichés consisting of men eating stale bread and drinking dirty water are only a small fraction of the number of horrible, yet “just” occurrences which are stereotypical of everyday life in prison.   Perhaps it could be a combination of your upbringing, horrific ideas about the punishment which our nation inflicts on those who violate its’ more serious laws that keeps people frightened just enough to lead a law-abiding life. Despite it’s success in keeping dangerous offenders off the streets, the American prison system fails in fulfilling its original design of restoring criminals to being productive members of society, it is also extremely expensive and wastes our precious tax dollars.

Every civilization in history has had rules, and citizens who break them. To this day governments struggle to figure out the best way to deal with their criminals in ways that help both society and those that commit the crimes. In prisons today, rehabilitation, deterrence, incapacitation, and retribution are all elements that provide a justice to society. Prisons effectively do their part in seeing that one if not more of these elements are met and successfully done. If it were not for these elements, than what would a prison be good for? In a constitutional democracy, the balance stands between two important aspects of human life; one of those aspects, perhaps in the view of many the most important one is individual liberty and privacy (Samaha, 6). According to Joel Samaha, author of the book Criminal Justice Seventh Edition, individual liberty and privacy refers to the idea of doing as you wish, coming and going at any time you see suitable, and not having to give “reports” of your whereabouts to anyone; all this of course, taking into account that you must abide by the laws governing a particular society (Samaha, 6). Though it can be argued otherwise, we as Americans for the most part experience individual liberty and privacy to a great extent. As American citizens, we have the choice to choose as we wish; except, however, those whose actions drove them to imprisonment. It is no surprise, that prison inmates have very little to choose from as they meet the sentences imposed on them due to the social violation they decided to engage in; because of books, documentaries, and other sources of information, many believe that prison inmates are nothing more than a burden who utilize tax money for their survival, as they in return, rehabilitate themselves and become law-abiding citizens of society. Despite having some choices such as recreation, the ability to work, and the access to religious programs, according to a prisoner who spent the majority of his life on death row, prison can drive a person to insanity.

Have you ever wonder why prisons are made? It is known that prisons are built to isolate and punish everyone that committed crime in their lives, whether it is in the past or present. However, lately there have been some arguments on whether everybody that committed crime should be put in jail or they should be allowed to stay outside of the prison, but with very strict supervisions. Nowadays, there have been some cases in which criminals are given the freedom to stay in their usual surroundings. The reason is people agree that criminals may have done something bad, but not all of them should be put in jail. There are other ways to punish those who did wrong aside from putting them in quarantine.

Since so much of jail life happens far from the public’s view, changes in implications and policy of long assumed truisms are infrequently observed by those that are not openly affected by penal system.

When the average person thinks of jails and prisons, they typically think of horrible criminals being locked up in order to protect the rest of society. They think justice has been served, and those who did the crime are now doing the time. But what goes on inside a prison, and inside the minds of the inmates? What about after those offenders have served their time, and are now being released back into the general public? People don’t really think about how prison affects a person’s mentality, or how incarceration impacts both relationships the inmate currently has, or ones that will develop in the future. Although it isn’t something most people think of first, incarceration is an experience that can have a negative psychological impact on a person for quite some time.
