The Criminal Justice career consists of many aspects such as law enforcement, corrections, and courts. Therefore, having a short and long-term career goals will help me stay focus on my area of interest and eventually grow in my area of choice which is corrections with juveniles. My aim is to work closely with juvenile offenders and the public with the hope to reduce reoffending and thereby promoting rehabilitation. To be successful in goal planning, you have to stay positive that you can do what you have set to do, setting goals that are feasible and you have control over. In addition, break down your goals into mini or small achievable task that you can revisit and once completed will leave you time or motivate you to take another goal. Most importantly, is to set a time frame for each goal to include dates and time. This will help keep track of your achievement or the need to reevaluate any of your goals. Earning my Master’s degree that seems too long in the beginning is now less than a month away which can be very nervous of not knowing what my career future holds. However, course like delinquency and Juvenile Justice, Research Methods, Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Victimology and Criminal Investigation has prepared me to be successful in my career path of choice. In addition to my educational achievement are my self-discipline and people’s person skills. I like helping others to be successful in life. My mother once told me “Whatever career path
My desire for a career in law enforcement started while pursuing my undergraduate degree at the University of Central Florida. As a freshman biology major with hopes of becoming a Radiologist, it did not take me long to realize the medical field was not for me. Peers in my classes had a passion and interest for the material that I did not possess. My grades poorly reflected the type of student I was. Realizing it was time for a change, at the end of my sophomore year I started seeking guidance. Unbeknownst to me, my disinterest in the curriculum was a major contribution to my poor performance. I completed career assessments and sat with academic counselors in several different areas of study. I was feeling more confused than ever because Criminal Justice courses often sparked my interest, but I hesitated due to the dangerous nature of police work.
The human mind has always fascinated me. Humanity is not only the only species to kill for pure game, but also the only species to inflict pain upon one another for their own enjoyment. It has always amazed me to watch a person do wrong and feel no sense of remorse or regret about it, this is why I have decided to study the thought process and reasoning behind crime by becoming a criminal psychologist. To begin my research I visited the Mississippi Choices website along with Psychology Schools 411 where I found information such as the everyday activities, the employment outlook, training and education required, and the estimated annual salary. Next, I visited the National Career Service website where I found information on working conditions. To find information such as the amount of positions available statewide and nationwide along with related occupations, I visited the Occupational Outlook Handbook Website.
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.
There will always be a fight for justice, and where there is crime there are those who must solve them. I wish to pursue a career in the criminal justice industry, mainly working as a forensic science criminalist. Those who use scientific logic and evidence found at the scene of the crime to solve the case, The heroes who don’t wear the labcoats instead of the black and blues. Heroes like these need certain skills, interests, and values that make them an official criminalist.
Another component of the Criminal Justice system is corrections. One of the jobs that the correction has is a parole agent. The goal for a parole agent is to protect the public. The responsibility for a parole agent is to assist ex- offenders so that they can adjust to life in a save and free community. They are also responsible to prevent future criminal acts. They help the people become a better person so that they can have a productive and normal live. Parole agents supervise the offenders who had been released from prison. (Careers in criminal, 2006)
Growing up I was always dealing with adversity. First it was my father needing surgery for his back. Later, resulted in him becoming disabled and being out of a job. Then, I was getting bullied along with my friends. After a while of this, I had enough of being defenseless and started to stand up for myself and them. This was what motivated me to want to pursue a career in Criminal Justice. I wanted to protect people from the wrong-doing of others because I knew what it felt like to be in that situation. The only difference between them and me is, I’ll always be there for them when there is a cry for help.
To work in the field of criminal justice, whether with rehabilitating offenders or in research analysis, has always been a goal of mine stemming from the beginning of my undergraduate studies at Lakeland University. It is in the Reentry Unit of the Department of Corrections, that there is the emphasis to work with offenders in order to reduce recidivism with the focus of providing support in educational programming, skill building, and goal planning to prepare offenders for community reintegration. Overall, the Reentry Unit of correctional system is an integral portion that provides a pathway for offenders to reintegrate.
As we started to explore different careers in Criminal Justice, what questions came to mind either about the area you are interested in or different areas?
Some individuals know early on in life what their career choice may be, while others may not know just yet. I was undecided until I enrolled for classes in 2011. I am now four semesters away from being able to graduate with a bachelor’s degree so I can attend law school. I have an interest in attending Oklahoma City University School of Law. I have done some research on this particular school and feel that this would be a better fit for myself.
I want a major in Criminal Justice/Science. You have to know what the major requires, what the major is about, the mission and the career. This major tell you about how to care, help, and to protect one another. It will cost me a lot of money.
When I decided to attend law school to pursue my life’s mission of working as attorney providing representation to those who lack adequate representation and have been wrongfully accused or wrongfully convicted studying law, I compiled a list of qualities that I was seeking in a law school. These included the ability for me to continue my involvement in Mock Trial/Moot Court hand-on learning experience, working in a Criminal Defense or Innocence Project clinic, becoming a member of the law review, and taking courses that focused on criminal procedure and causes of wrongful convictions. West Virginia Law embodies each and every one of these qualities. I hopeful during my studies at West Virginia Law that I will have the opportunity to take the Crime Film Documentaries course taught this fall by Professor Elkins and the Psychology for Lawyers course taught by Professor Elkins this past spring. I am especially intrigued by the focus of the documentaries course on the “shadow” cast on our criminal justice system due to faulty police investigations,
As a police officer’s career moves ahead one only thinks of the good that can be done by having this career. Ask anyone what the purpose of being a police officer is and they will answer that it is to keep people safe and maintain the peace. What many people do not realize is that being a police officer can damage a person emotionally. Many people see officers helping others and doing good but they do not see what happens when they are off duty. Just like any job being a police officer has its faults. A fault that being a police officer has is the emotional toll it can have on the officer and his family. Several people focus on the officer and how he has been affected by the job but they do not consider the family, the family that is there to help and support
The amount of success we will have is based on planning. Imagining myself as an artists has always been my focus, still I allowed other opinions and ideas to influence me to change my decision. My focus is on how successful I’ll be. I want to be financially stable and not dependent on others. Faced with these choices I have automatically washed away my dreams of being an artist. The career path I’ve been focusing on now is Criminal Justice. No matter what I do, I want to be satisfied and productive to my career.
I wanted to be a parole officer but as a correctional officer I quickly realized that many offenders gravitated towards me as a mentor even though I was very young. I begin to pull the offenders who often gave me a lot of trouble out one on one and realized that they just wanted to express their frustrations on the mistakes that they had made that changed their lives forever. At that moment I knew that I still wanted to help people make better decisions in life but not as a correctional officer and I begin to notice counselors visiting the offenders in church. I saw how the offenders express themselves in church and it made me realize how they were just as much human as I was. I made the choice to become a social worker ultimately after experiencing
That’s an interesting first name. Generally Bailey is a last name right? It looks like me and you have something in common, which is pursuing a Criminal Justice Counseling degree. You seem like a compassionate individual that is active among the career you’re trying to accomplish. I never heard of Students against Destructive Decision (SADD). I had to look it up once I read it. That’s great that the program focuses on teens. It’s important to make sure that the youth aren’t ignored. A troubled teen can lead to so many other problems, especially as they grow older. What is the occasional problem that you guys happen to deal with more often than others? I’m going to assume bullying or depression? Back during my high school years, we had a suicide
