The identity of the Bra Boys can be seen through their values and attitudes. They are presented through the Cody, the value of brother ship and Attitude of brother ship through their tattoos and being there for each other.

In their family home, they were shelter from the outside world, with all their cares and wants taking care by their family. The second part of the story is the brothers dealing with the death of their father. I think symbolized them leaving boyhood and becoming men. As I have said in the beginning this was a traditional coming of age story, but was a slight twist. Rick Moody did a great job of condensing these brothers’ life into one bold short story. The brothers come in this world as newborns, then immature children and teens, then ultimately men. The story was a good one but Moody’s constant repetition seem to be him rambling on about the subject instead of telling us what the story is about. The sentimental portion of his story were quite vivid and were written very well. I wish he had use that same style throughout the story. I could only stand certain parts of the story, because it seems like those parts of his story he did not put much effort into. When he took the time to write the story correctly you feel it while you read it. The parts he seem to give up or not pay special attention too did not fit well into this story. I would really like to read his other stories to see if he uses this same type of writing. I think he has passion for his stories but this particular one was too little hard to

The article “How Boys Become Men” written by Jon Katz, gives a positive statement on how boys still haven’t change and are still growing up the same. Jon Katz, shares with us while walking his dog one day, he saw a boy get beaten by a group of older boys. While walking towards him, Katz asked if he was okay; the boy said yes and begun to swing like nothing happened. I believe that what Jon Katz states is true, because the fact is; boys are always going to think they’re the Alpha Male in every situation. For example: who can climb the highest Rock, who can make a bigger splash in the pool or who can maybe get a girlfriend first.

Still, through this, the mother sees the children, especially her own son, as fairly innocuous, only posturing as men, but still calm, like "a room full of small bankers". They may be men, she seems to say, but they are gentlemen, and harmless at that. The macho posturing becomes more tangible and tense when one older boy says to a younger one "I could beat you up". This statement puts the reader and the speaker on guard, aware that a change is taking place. One can almost see the mother perk up her ears.

Rick Moody 's short story "Boys" is written with a distinct style. The author uses a form of a stream of consciousness to convey the purpose at hand, which encompasses writing as if without hesitation or editing - whatever came to Moody’s thoughts, he transferred to text. There was also a substantial use of the word “boys”, placing emphasis on the central meaning of the story. The style is thoroughly descriptive and fails to leave any details of the boys ' lives out. This quality donates a sense of reality and creates a bond between the reader and the characters. The tone of the story comes of as particularly unbiased and serious, as if the author were just stating purely factual information. As events become more somber in the boys ' lives, the author approaches a more sympathetic tone. The boys were supposed to be kids, fooling around playing games and living a care-free childhood, but these boys found themselves in scenarios no boy or child should ever encompass.
