Biology Personal Statement

Humans are so occupied with the outside world, they forget that a world consists in them as well. Biology allows for us, as humans, to learn about the different systems which join together to make one whole human. I aim to major in biology mainly because I hope to expand my knowledge, become an Optometrist, and wish to assist others.

Courses I have taken that are relevant to my career interests are biology, chemistry, Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions, advanced genetics and applied biotechnology, and physiology. Biology and chemistry have provided me with a basic science background that is essential to understanding more advanced science courses. Human Body Systems and physiology have helped me to learn basic anatomy and physiology through hands-on activities like constructing organ systems out of clay and dissecting a cat. Biology much like my major has several layers in its complexity and to move on to the next stage you have to understand the one before. To move on in my major and career I have to successfully understand the concept of biology 102. Biology is the study of living organisms, all life depends on certain physiological and chemical functions. The study of biology includes osmosis, acid-base balance, electron flow among other things to work together to provide the proper understanding of the human body. In healthcare you must have a basic understanding of the underlying principles of life; for example, as a nurse you will take people's blood sugar/blood glucose- but that number is meaningless unless you understand the purpose of glucose in our bodies and how we respond to its sugar level. The concept continues to identifying a patient's illness from how you respond and classify the symptoms. Anatomy a branch of biology will help me as a nurse differentiate minor problems from major problems. The study of biology allow nurses, doctors or anyone in medicine to do more than just speculate about health

One must be able to understand the changes that the human body goes through to determine cause of death. Some of the classes that my major requires are biology of animals, biology of the cell, as well as chemistry. These classes are intended to make a student with interest in biology familiar with what he or she may see in their actual career. In my case, I will see all three. Most of these classes also have laboratory classes that coincide with them to familiarize students with the environment that he or she may be in. While most of the time, these classes can be exciting, they are not easy. Having a biology major requires dedication and diligence in order to complete the many years of school that it entails.

My academic career is based on the sciences, especially chemistry and biology. Throughout my childhood, I have been greatly exposed to the sciences. My mother was a nurse practitioner in a rural clinic, which was connected to our house. Consequently, the clinic became my playground and the stethoscopes became my toys. Therefore, I was always interested in how the body worked and what affected our health.

Firstly, I want to follow my passion for the medical field with a biology degree. It will help me to get a good foundation when I get into pharmacy school. Choosing biology as my major is a good opportunity for me to learn new things that are a benefit later when I take the PCAT. At some point, the researchers have shown that people completed in a four-year program to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, or in the familiar field would get higher chances of admission to the pharmacy and medical school. So, I need to work hard for it.

“I liked Biology and how this worked. I always wanted to become a doctor growing up and I felt like it was the best course.It involved agricultural of science ;that's why I chose to do Biological science instead of Biology.This involves the business side of agricultural. This includes crops, animals, and as well as learning about the human biology. ​Ever since I was a child, I have loved science. I learned at a young age to always keep asking questions and to never settle with just simply not knowing something. The thought of how everything works on a molecular level never ceases to fascinate me. I have other interests spanning multiple fields, but none can compare to my love of science. I quite enjoy being in the labs and getting to do experiments to uncover answers that were otherwise unknown to me. It is that curiosity and interest that keeps my fascination towards the realm of science strong.

I am interested in environmental studies as a potential major and want to learn more about this field in a professional setting. Through my Human Evolution, Environmental Science, and AP Biology courses, I have become familiar with ecology and evolution. While the Community-Based Ecology in the Galápagos project looks at these fields from a philosophical standpoint, it will provide me with practical experience and invaluable insights as I decide my major and future career path

And to grasp how our systems work, I needed to have a deeper understanding of what they are made of, which is what biochemistry is all about- the chemistry of life. My interest in the human body started in fourth grade when I first learned about anatomy and the body systems. Until this day, I haven’t forgotten the names of the bones in the skeletal system. When I volunteered to translate and help out in a Medical Mission last summer in the Philippines, my interest in medicine grew. I knew I wanted to become a doctor, but this volunteer opportunity made me certain that the medical field was for me. It was fascinating to be involved in the discussion between the patient and the doctors since I was the one translating from English to Filipino and vice versa, and seeing how the doctors handle diagnoses and treatments was quite a learning experience. I’ve also taken Honors and Advanced Placement courses in Science and Math which also fueled my interest in my chosen field. Taking the AP Biology course really made me more aware and gave me a greater interest towards life and our human bodies. It’s mind-blowing to think about the complexity of our living systems and how we can be unaware of what is actually going on inside of us. This is precisely why I strive to become a doctor- I want to learn more about medicine and

The way the human body has perfectly adapted to survive in this world is beyond miraculous, it is made up of many diverse systems which work together to keep us alive and healthy without us being physically aware of what processes are taking place inside us. Moreover survival and the combat of illnesses present in the human body is solely reliant on the biomedical sciences, which has fuelled my desire to expand my knowledge of life on a wider, biological level and to pursue a career in biomedical science.

My interest in science has been a passion of mine since the start of middle school where I learned to excel and discover new learning opportunities. I choose to major in Biology my junior year, since I have started my undergraduate classes has giving me the pleasure of wanting to pursue a career of working in the medical field.

After graduating from high school, I will be attending Indiana University and majoring in biology. I will be majoring in biology because the courses I will take will help me prepare for the Medical College Admission Test. The MCAT is required to be accepted into Indiana University School of Medicine. I know IU will prepare me for medical school. Going through college and medical school will require full commitment of my time and I am all in for it. I have always known that I am meant to be in the medical field ever since I was a child. I want to be an impact on people’s lives and give out support because that is one of the many skills I am good at. The more science courses I took in high school, the more I found an interest in dermatology.
