Better Government System: Athens Vs. Roman Republic

In Athens and Rome, citizenship was to be honored and protected. There were many requirements to become a citizen, so not everyone could have it. The Roman Republic allowed free men, women, and children to have citizenship, but the Athens only gave citizenship to free, native-born adult males. Although it might seem like the citizenship system was better in Rome, the system in Athens was better because citizens were given equal rights, Athenians ostracized citizens so there is no dictator, and every citizen could become officials.

The reason Rome is better than Athens is because they were superior to their enemies. The Roman Republic was in the Italian peninsula in 509 to 27 BCE. Rome was better than was better than Athens is because they were more uniform in their systems and rules and laws. They both had their Downpoints and their Strengths but Rome still came out stronger.Rome was able to thrive as a more advanced system than Athens because they had a more organized voting system, allowed for equitable rights, and had allowed citizen to actively participation the government.

Rome and Athens were both superpowers during their time and paved the way for modern day western culture. There were a few things that Rome did better though including their citizenship system. The following reasons are why Rome’s citizenship system works better than Athens’. Firstly the Romans allowed a higher number of people to become citizens. The next reason is that Rome made sure that their citizens were playing a role in society. Lastly the Romans had a more organized and efficient senate than that of the Athenians.

In Rome they allow a lot of people to become citizens. Romes people included :native men, native women, native male children, and female children. In Athens they only let native men be citizens. How would athens increase if they didn't give females citizenship? In athens they didn't even consider children citizens. To be considered a citizen in Athens you had to complete education and serve two years in the military.

The Athenian and Roman governments both had similarities in their form of government, but the differences that they had made them unique because of the parties and rules they lived by. To start off, the Athenian Government was a democracy and the Roman Government was a republic. Each of them had very important specific details which make them unique and different like what made them citizens and able to vote for the officials, and how they organized their government system.

Rome's government was more organised than Athens for many reasons. The pictures in document E and F show that rome was more organized because they held meetings in buildings and they were not roaming around while Athens held their meetings outside and people roamed around freely. Rome was organized and not roaming around they were sitting down, listening, and speaking when they were aloud to. Rome also met in buildings while athens met outside meaning they were sometimes stopped by weather and could easily be disrupted. Athens Allowed citizens to show up while Rome did not.

The city-state of Athens had a better system of citizenship because they cared more about who became a civilian, everybody who was a citizen had equal rights and the citizens had a democracy. With the population of around 300,000 people, including slaves only 13% were considered citizens. Athenians emphasized citizen responsibility more than citizen rights. In Athens, participating in government and making the city-state work was considered the honorable act to accomplish.

Rome had a Senate of about three hundred men who served for life and paid close attention. The Athenian’s had an Assembly that was more casual and not as serious which can lead to a bad decision. The number of people attending was at least 6,000 but all 40,000 citizens could attend (Doc E and F). The Roman Senate and the Athenian Assembly did the same important things like making treaties and declaring war so Rome’s organization is another reason their citizenship was better because it could help keep them from making a bad

The Roman Citizenship System was superior to the Athenian Citizenship system because it allowed non-Romans to also become Citizens. The way that one could become a Citizen in the Roman Republic was to be married in a certain part of Roman Territory, be a free native borne adult male, female, or child. Athenians only allowed Athenian Men to become Citizens, not even Athenian Women or Children were citizens. I will also show the differences between how the Citizens of Rome and Athens make governmental Decisions, how citizens were treated in the two cities, and what rights the citizens had once they became citizens.

Rome had a superior system of citizenship to Athens. In general, the significance of being a citizen is that it allows someone to vote on laws, become an active part of their government, and manage their own land. A citizen would be free to speak their mind and express their opinions. If one was a citizen of Athens, they would be expected to participate in the government, go to assemblies, vote on laws, have an education, and have been in military training for two years. One would be expected to help make Athens a better place for its people. However, a citizen of Rome would be expected to bear healthy children for the Roman army and become the best citizen they could. Rome or Athens, who do you think had a better system of citizenship? In a comparison between Athens in 400 BCE and Rome in 1 CE, I believe Rome had a better system of citizenship. While both occupied the area that is modern day Italy and had thriving cultures, Rome had a better system of citizenship for three reasons: first, people with knowledge of how to run a government were members of the senate; second, Roman cities were willing to grant partial citizenship; and third, Roman citizens had rights. Because people with knowledge of how to run a government were members of the senate, the administration ran smoothly.

The evolution of the Athenian, Roman, and U.S democracies started in ancient civilizations over 3,000 years ago. The U.S system of government has undergone changes through the past years, the U.S system is still in use. Athenian and Roman democracy's were both in the same time period, but share some big differences between them. These three different systems of government went through changes in many ways.

Athens has a better citizenship system than Rome because they believed that every citizens place was to vote, citizen responsibilities were important in keeping a strong government, and equal rights were granted when you became a citizen.

The major ancient Greek city-states -Athens and Sparta, depict different forms of government which are; monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy. Aristocracy and democracy were found in Athens whereas monarchy and oligarchy were more established in Sparta. Both cities, in a way, they demonstrated a tyranny form of government. Due to these separate opinions, Rome and Athens each developed a unique system of citizenship, one focused on citizen responsibility, and the other on individual rights. In contrast, Romans were judged by how he interacted with his family, his neighbors, and his property.
