Beowulf started out his battles confidently and brawny. By the end of his battles he is less confident and wasn’t as brawny as he started out. Beowulf started out with no weapons, but by the end he is beginning to become weaker so he had to rely on weapons to help him. Beowulf enters the battle with Grendel brawny and confident because he has killed so many other people. The poem quotes “ No weapon on earth is capable of harming Grendel”(Sparknotes 2017). So it was all on him to kill Grendel. Beowulf is still confident about killing Grendel when he see’s that no weapon can harm him. He had no other option but to rip something off because a sword wasn’t going to do the job. Grendel became frightened and tried to scurry back to his place and
To begin the story of Beowulf is a short and very grand epic poem that gives the reader a platform of a hero’s supernatural strength. For example when Grendel attacks Beowulf the scene described as “claws bent back as Beowulf leaned up on one arm, that shepherd of evil, guardian of crime, knew at once that no where on earth, he had met a man hands whose hands were harder. No doubt that this quote emphasis Beowulf strength, Grendel a monster probably ten times bigger than man is terrified of how he is gripped by Beowulf hands.Furthermore stating how Beowulf a man born with this ability is quite capable enough to eventually kill Grendel by ripping his arm off.
In the beginning of the book didn’t think anyone else was a little cocky about himself really he thought that he was better yet he would also say that he wasn’t cocky. For example he says "Not that I fool myself with thoughts that I'm more noble."(Gardner Chapter 1, pg. 6).yet as the story progressed his way of thinking and acting started to change. He himself was starting to think differently about everything. At one point in the story Grendel meet up with the dragon at first Grendel didn’t like the dragon and he was scared of him but later on Grendel get use to the dragon and they start taking. The dragon starts to give advice to Grendel and at one point he says to Grendel “You want the word. That's what you've come for. My advice is, don't ask! Do as
Growing up, everyone has a idea on what a hero looks like. Heros represent a lot of different aspects of bravery. Every culture in history has had a heroic figure. In most cultures heroes portray different aspects of being a hero. In Anglo-Saxon times heroes were considered strong, and fearless. Beowulf is a true epic hero in Anglo- Saxon times because he is very fearless, strong, and honored.
In the beginning of Beowulf, he had been called to Heorot to protect King Hrothgar from “a powerful demon, a prowler through the dark (86).” Due to the deaths of all the other kings since Shields and his guards, he needed the protection from Beowulf himself. He was confident enough in himself to know he would be able to protect all the people, as well as the king from this “god-cursed brute (121)” that is continuing on attacking and killing people. “ There was no one else like him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high-born and powerful (196-198),” speaks very highly of Beowulf and the power he has once he is given the sword. When Beowulf reaches Daneland he is welcomed in by the King allowing him to “move forward
The poem does not give this insight of what happens before, or from Grendel's point of view. Seeing this scene in the movie gives the audience a better understanding of why Grendel and also his mother attack the Danes. Later in the movie Beowulf says, "He's no more human than you and I", which is true. If the Danes didn’t kill Grendel's father, the outcome of the story could have possibly been changed because Grendel would have had a different life and not seek revenge on the Danes, specifically the one who Grendel had seen kill his father. In the poem Grendel fights Beowulf, rather than avoiding Beowulf most of the time in the movie. In the poem, Grendel is seen as an evil monster that kills and eats the Hrothgar warriors and cannot be penetrated by weapons, rather than just human, or troll, like the movie. When the battle with Grendel occurs in the poem, it is said that Beowulf had cut off his arm to defeat him. While in the movie, Grendel finds himself stuck hanging, and must cut off his own arm to escape from Beowulf and his men. Both the movie and poem result in the death of Grendel, eventually leading to the revenge of his mother.
In the epic poem Beowulf by Seamus Heaney, the main character Beowulf displays his courage throughout the whole story, defeating monsters left and right.
Beowulf is an epic poem staring a classic hero named Beowulf himself. Beowulf is definitely and example of a hero and can be compared in real life to marines, red cross volunteers, and cancer survivors. Beowulf shows all the qualities of an epic hero. Some of those examples are strength, good moral character, and a tragic flaw.
Beowulf’s preparation for the battle involves removing all of his armor and weapons, and moving his soldiers to the side. He believes so strongly that he can defeat Grendel barehanded that he completely ignores all the equipment he brought with him for that specific battle. This shows either that Beowulf is very arrogant, or the he is
To begin, one of the many ways that Beowulf was different than Grendel is that Beowulf was brave. Every night Grendel snuck into Herot Hall to destroy King Hrothgar’s men. He did this while hiding in the shadows, sneaking around in the dead of night, and attacking while the men we asleep and at there most vulnerable. These are not the characteristics the brave, these are the characteristics of a foul, loathsome, cowardly beast. Mean while, Beowulf liked to meet a problem head on, in this case the problem was Grendel himself. Determined Beowulf sailed to Denmark to defeat Grendel, telling Hrothgar that he will take Grendel’s life with his bare hands. As told in the story, “ That mighty protector of men/ Meant to hold the monster till it’s life/ leaped out” (Raffel, 1963, l. 366-368). And when Beowulf got the chance to do just that, Grendel took the cowards road, “Grendel’s one thought
This basically hints that Grendel will not make it much longer. It states that Grendel is going to die. So I think Beowulf is going to kill him. P.10 "When they joined the struggle there was something they could not have known at the time, that no blade on earth, no blacksmith's art could ever damage their opponent." Grendel is strong.
He wants to fight Grendel hand-to-hand, the reader gets a glimpse of how Beowulf is most confident with defeating foes without weapons. Beowulf shows his ability to defeat Grendel when he says, “ ‘unarmed he shall face me if face me he dares.” (684) Beowulf’s confidence in himself to fight without armor or weapons could come from arrogance but his character traits show it is from his
Beowulf has always been able to defeat the bad guys, but Grendel has trumped all the others. He is an absolute man slaughterer. This is going to be the very first fight that will actually be a challenge and that is what terrifies Beowulf. A competitor of this fierceness is absolutely crazy. Beowulf is staring at what he believes is certain death, but cannot admit that
Beowulf was a fearless fighter and fought Grendel without any armor or weapons. Beowulf's strength was unlike any other, this is essentially proven mid fight when Grendel's arm is ripped from his body by the bare hands of Beowulf. This bloody battle signifies Beowulf as a hero since he took on Grendel, a task that no other man would dare,
In the poem, a man known as Beowulf performs inhuman feats, defeats monsters who would kill regular men, and selflessly protects others. At the beginning of Beowulf, Grendel rampages through Heorot, killing indiscriminately. Beowulf hears of the problems and shows up to kill Grendel and discharge his father’s debt to Hrothgar. When Grendel arrives, Beowulf fights him without armor or weapons and kills him by ripping his arm off. After Grendel’s mother hears about this, she decides to avenge him. She goes to Heorot and kills one of Hrothgar’s advisors. Beowulf and his company find her, kill her, and bring back Grendel’s head as a trophy. The king gives him gifts and he returns to Geatland. Upon returning to Geatland, he gives the treasure to
Though in his fight with Grendel’s mother he brings a sword,“My famous old sword stay in your hands, I shall shape glory with Hrunting” (Beowulf line 464-465), Beowulf knows that sword had no effect with Grendel and this shows that he believes Grendel’s mother is not at par in strength with Grendel. Underestimating Grendel’s mother and jumping in head first without thought, Beowulf is almost killed. This contributes to the plot because when Beowulf becomes King he does not recklessly jump into battle, “He said farewell to his followers” (Beowulf line 629). In a sense he humbles himself “I feel no shame, with shield and sword and armor, against this monster” (Beowulf line 635) he is more level headed in his future fights
